Local Network TV Affiliates Who De-Emphasize Their Affiliation

During coverage of the latest Fort Hood, TX shooting, I was watching their streaming TV link. I was very surprised to see how the station, which apparently is a NBC affiliate, does not feature NBC's logo in any way whether it is on their online graphics or in their logo. Are there any other network affiliate stations around the US that do the same? It almost seems like their are embarrassed to have an affiliation with their network!

In Birmingham, WVTM-13 dropped the NBC-13 branding a few years ago and reverted to its previous branding as Alabama's 13. The NBC peacock is still in the logo.

WPRI-TV in Providence identifies as "WPRI 12" instead of "CBS 12" which they did a while back. I think they've called themselves "WPRI 12" for a dozen or so years now (since the logo change circa 2001).

KYTV, the NBC affiliate in Springfield, Mo., has not featured the peacock in their logo since they refreshed their logo and got their latest graphics package in 2010. KYTV did, however, feature an NBC Olympics logo next to the station logo in lower thirds during newscasts shortly before and during the 2014 Winter Olympics. KYTV brands itself as "KY3" and has never branded as "NBC 3."

A long time ago, stations almost never self-identified with their network. They stressed the channel number above all else, because that's what you had to turn to in order to watch the station. Now, with most viewers watching on cable, the stations need an ID that's easy to pick out on the cable box's on-screen menu.

We remember too that Fox was the first network (at least widespread) in which their stations were branding with "network-channel/city/region". However, KMSP in the Twin Cities was the first station (as far as we know) that started with the "network-channel" branding, back when it was an ABC affiliate--"ABC 9".

From what I see from visiting TVNewsTalk.net, it seems like a good amount of the network affiliates across Texas (except in the bigger markets--DFW, Houston, and San Antonio) brand themselves almost exclusively with their call letters--no channel number (cable or OTA), no network-city/region. Austin would be a good example; every station except KTBC (Fox 7), KNVA (The CW Austin), and KAKW (Univision 62), brands with their call letters only.

Green Bay has two stations, one formerly owned by CBS which reversed branding when they were sold off to Liberty then Nexstar; WFRV went from 'CBS 5' to 'Channel 5' after Liberty's purchase, then 'Local 5' after Nexstar bought them.

WBAY has always been 'TV-2'. What's harder though is that ABC requires all their stations to have the ABC ball in-logo no matter what since they got in the new matte version last year, so visually you see 'ABC2' but when it's said on air, it's always 'TV-2'.

Newschannel5 here in Nashville not only de-emphasizes their network affiliation, they even de-emphasize their own call letters, which is strange, considering that WTVF stands for "TV five," as in they are on channel 5. Even their website de-emphasizes their call letters, as it is www.newschannel5.com. Across town, WSMV 4 channel is almost the opposite. Not only do they welcome their NBC affiliation, their news music sounders sound an awful lot like NBC's own news themes. Sometimes, it is difficult to be able to ascertain whether local or national news is coming on channel 4!

Are they on channel 5 on all the local cable systems?

On my cable system, all the over-the-air channels in HD start at 801.

I believe that their SD channel is, but not their HD channel. But I do not have cable, so I do not know for sure.

I would imagine that most people who have cable know the location of "Channel 5" by the cable number, not the OTA channel number. And that's the main reason why more and more stations nowadays pick some sort of identity other than their OTA channel number.

WTVF-TV of Nashville was analog channel 5. They use channel 25 for their digital transmissions.

Here in Hartford/New Haven, I can't really think of anybody who doesn't downplay their network affiliation. Channel 3 (CBS) of Hartford and channel 8 (ABC) of New Haven don't have the network logo with their station logo. However, "NBC", "FOX" and "MY" definitely apply to three other stations here! As far as I know, WCCT-TV (CW) channel 20 of Waterbury/Hartford doesn't say "CW" in their logo directly. Lastly, I'm not counting WHPX-TV (ION) channel 26 of New London. The only thing that's "local" on said station is the top-of-hour legal ID.

In NYC, WPIX just calls themselves "Pix 11". They rarely ever mention the CW anymore. All the other networks do mention their network affiliation, which makes sense given they are flagships ("NBC 4", "CBS2")

in Minneapolis the only one who emphasizes their affiliation is KMSP. They always say "Fox 9"

WCCO CBS just says "WCCO Channel 4"...even though they are O&O they never did the "CBS_" saying like other O&O stations did a few years ago
KSTP ABC says "5 Eyewitness News"
KARE NBC says "KARE 11"

all 3 do have the affiliation in the logo though.

Both CW & MY prominently use it as "CW23" and "My29"

Of late, WNCN Raleigh/Durham has changed its branding from "NBC17" to "WNCN." CBS affiliate WRAL likewise identifies itself by its call letters; only ABC o&o WTVD ("ABC11") and Fox affiliate WRAZ ("Fox50") identify by network, although I think WLFL is "CW22") (WRDC is "MyRDC").

WFMY identifies as "WFMY News2," although the CBS eye is in its logo. WGHP is still "Fox8."

JOETV - KZJO Seattle (My Network TV). Used to be KMYQ "My Q-2" between 2006-10.
KIRO 7, KING 5, KOMO 4 do not use CBS/NBC/ABC in their identifications.
KIMA Yakima also is on the list as is KREM 2 in Spokane, and KBOI 2 in Boise. All 3 do not use "CBS" in their branding.
NTV in Nebraska (KHGI) also makes this list. They have ABC in the logo but do not call themselves ABC 13, or ABC 6 (KWNB).

To be honest, I don't know what the stations here in Atlanta call themselves. When I tune in a show I want to see, I busy myself making snack or pouring a beverage until the program actually starts. In between shows, it's time for a bathroom break or a beverage refill. I suppose that they identify themselves somehow, it's just not something I pay any attention to.
