New oldie format coming to 98.9

Apparently Shannon will not be heard anyore starting April 28th.

WestwoodOne Premiers New Network Oldies Format. This is the first new format debut since WestwoodOne and Cumulus Media Networks merged. The new “Good Time Oldies” 24-hour format debuts on April 28. WestwoodOne states that “Good Time Oldies” “will feature music from the golden era of pop, rock and soul – centering on hit music from the 60s and 70s – and positioned slightly earlier than traditional adult hits-formatted stations.” Personalities on board the format include: oldies pro Jim Zippo in morning drive, John Summers, and Kevan Browning (who moves over from the company’s classic hits 24-hour format).

At least its staying Oldies. 60's, 70's, and some 80's would be the perfect mix. Is format already playing somewhere else or will 4/28 be the national debut?

Oh, how sad. TOC is on all the time in our place. Hate to have to listen through that disco and '70's and '80's soul and rock. Guess this means they'll ditch the early '60's and the formative '50's playlists. Band move, bad move. And I, like max would like to get a previews listen to the format. Is such available anywhere?

One day after revealing a new “Good Time Oldies” network to debut on April 28, Cumulus Media Networks has revealed they will stop distributing Scott Shannon’s True Oldies Channel at the end of June.

The new Westwood One Good Time Oldies promo sheet states the format will target Men 45-64 with a music mix featuring 60% 1960s, 25% 1970s, and 15% 1950s and 1980s described as “the golden era of pop, rock, and soul: hit music of the ’60s and ’70s with a healthy portion of “oh-wow” songs from other decades. The music is up tempo and the presentation is full of energy, including features about rock and roll history and the timeless artists of the era.” To contrast, Westwood One’s Classic Hits network is 60% 1970s, 25% 1980s, and 15% 1960s.

Shannon’s True Oldies Channel currently airs on over 100 stations nationwide including Cumulus’ “Oldies 98.9” Atlanta. The network’s future had been up in the air since Shannon departed Cumulus’ 95.5 WPLJ New York for WCBS-FM. Shannon intends to seek a new distributor to keep the network running.

Are there any sources with more details? Are those percentages from the decades going to be mostly rock, pop, or soul songs? Are the songs from the 60's destined to be from bands like The Doors or Jefferson Airplane, or mostly bands like The Archies or the 1910 Fruitgum Company? Can we expect to hear Wilson Pickett, or Archie Bell and the Drells?

Right Back Where We Started From

Be it the old KAAY-WLS-KXOK or even old KTTR 1490 Rolla,Mo. we are on our way back to the future with the best of the best. For years I have been canvessing radio stations to up the bottom of the charts. Many of these lost and forgotten jewels are the roots of our childhood memories as well as a way of life we truly miss. We may not be able to time-travel but through oldies radio we can come pretty darn close.

Well said!

Well, its May 1 and its still True Oldies (not that I'm complaining). What happened to the change?

So, did it change or not? I can't tell any difference.

I just tuned in via my regular AM/FM radio, and they're still playing the TOC. Could it be just a glitch with the stream? I don't know. However, the web site thing is a done deal.

Well, it's now Tuesday morning 6/10, and Oldies 98.9 is still playing the TOC. There was indeed a glitch with the stream yesterday. The stream is back to normal and it is working right right now. Plus, the http://www.oldies989atlanta.com/ home page is back up. The site now redirects to the URL http://wwwq-hd.pro.cumulus.tritonflex.com/. It's that URL that now displays the home page as it was before. I apologize for causing a false alarm. Of course, the flip to the GTO Network will still happen. It just won't happen until the end of the month. Anyway, that is all.

So, is Gary 'F' Reynolds doing the music for the new service, or does he go into eclipse with Shannon?

Once again I think the Cloud Heads are making a BIG miscalculation. Just as Cheap Channels did (and is doing) they think they can be smarter than the listeners and put something out there people will fall all over themselves to tune to. They're beginning to act and sound a lot like Cox.

But then again, why break tradition?

I thought that Cumulus and Scott Shannon (who owns the TOC name) were parting ways because of Shannon's "retirement" from Cumulus and then reappearing over at CBS.

I think TOC played more late 70's than GTO. 98.9 still has the banner up for True Oldies on their web page and no mention of a change(slight as it may be). Nothing on the Facebook page either.
Nothing from Rodney Ho either, although he did a quick column saying that this would happen on July 1st!
