All this will do is stifle freedom of speech. Now, hate speech can't be tolerated. However, I'm getting the inkling that there is an attempt to re-define "hate speech" as any speech the P.C. crowd doesn't like.
The professional outrage industry strikes again.
Tom Friedman wrote a great column yesterday in the NY Times. It was the Four Words That are Going Away. One of them is local. This is one example. These folks thought what they said was only heard by their audience in Rochester. Whoops! Sorry. Not any more. Imus found that out when he talked about a women's college basketball team. The Dixie Chicks found that out when they thought they were just speaking to their concert audience in England. They didn't know it would get picked up by a national talk show host in the US. If you're talking on the radio, lots of people can hear what you say, and it can bite you in the butt.
This wasn't an AM talk station either. This was an FM rocker. And for some reason, this pair went off on a 12 minute rant. What set that off?
Should on-air hosts ever be held accountable for hurtful/hateful/mean/distasteful things they say?

Unless we start standing up to these thugs, our industry is doomed.
