Kimberly & Beck?

Entercomm probably hired this duo to be edgy. When they do their job of being edgy, Entercomm fires them without hesitation. Wrongful termination?

I woulda thought there might have been more comments on the firing but the B/NF/R board isn't what it used to be. I know people on this board aren't afraid to comment on controversial things so I guess this group either didn't listen, doesn't care or both.

There really is no defense for what they said. There's nothing entertaining or informative to hate speech. So the company took the proper course of action.

Stations should expect issues to arise when they hire people to be edgy. So, when edgy hosts actually get "edgy" the company should not be shocked or act shocked. I haven't heard their broadcast, but I must say that, in a broader sense, I am concerned that freedom of speech in this country is in some turmoil. There are members of the Politically Correct crowd who have a tyrannical streak. They demand to have people fired, lose their livelihoods, and be "destroyed" if they disagree with them on certain "hot-button" issues. All this will do is stifle freedom of speech. Now, hate speech can't be tolerated. However, I'm getting the inkling that there is an attempt to re-define "hate speech" as any speech the P.C. crowd doesn't like.

You can read what they said in the article. It's not edgy. It's hateful. Freedom of speech comes with responsibility, and that means when you say something stupid, you can expect to get shot, hit, or fired. That's been the case for the history of this country. These particular people don't know where the line is between being controversial and being stupid. Now they know.

Tom Friedman wrote a great column yesterday in the NY Times. It was the Four Words That are Going Away. One of them is local. This is one example. These folks thought what they said was only heard by their audience in Rochester. Whoops! Sorry. Not any more. Imus found that out when he talked about a women's college basketball team. The Dixie Chicks found that out when they thought they were just speaking to their concert audience in England. They didn't know it would get picked up by a national talk show host in the US. If you're talking on the radio, lots of people can hear what you say, and it can bite you in the butt.

Reminds me of a jock I worked with back in the mid 80s. He was on late at night and used to clown around breaking format here and there. One day he comes in and tells me he got in a bunch of trouble by the boss, wondering who it was who might've tipped the boss off to his shenanigans.

All I said to him was "Well, you did do it on the air".

This wasn't an AM talk station either. This was an FM rocker. And for some reason, this pair went off on a 12 minute rant. What set that off?

Should on-air hosts ever be held accountable for hurtful/hateful/mean/distasteful things they say?

Won't the listeners hold the host accountable by choosing to not listen? Some people get offended over every little thing someone says.

In this case, they could probably attract more listeners. I've never listened to them before, but after just listening to the 12 minutes now, I'd be listening daily.

How about the conflict merchants that make a living off getting people fired? When are we going to hold THEM accountable? There has to be a balance, and the balance is WAY off right now.

It also allows people who have absolutely no idea of context or history to chime in. When some pathetic nobody hiding behind a keyboard can get 4000 people who have never even HEARD of this show and don't live in the market anyway to sign an online "petition" to get two peoples' livelihood taken from them, there is a SERIOUS problem.

Unless we start standing up to these thugs, our industry is doomed. You want to know why radio is so bland and boring? This story right here shows why.

It WAS Funny & Entertaining and Good Edgy Radio in my opinion. But here is an idea,... if you don't like it, don't listen. But it truly is a sad state in America when these uptight, politically correct, do-gooders,... who probably don't even listen to the show have to spoil the fun for everyone else. And I don't want to hear any horsesh*t on how tough it is to be a Transgender individual as I really don't care. Quite frankly life is pretty much tough for everyone in one shape or another and their struggles are no more important than mine, or yours. But somehow most people just suck it up and deal with their situation no matter what it is, and you go on with your life. But you don't have to agree with Kimberly & Beck's comments, or even appreciate the humor of the bit they did, but I laughed. I laughed hard quite a few times. And I'm sure many of you did as well. I'll never be able to listen to "Dude Looks Like a Lady" in the same way again. But don't expect me to put on a Politically Correct Hat, jump on the bandwagon and say it was wrong of them to do so. Because I won't. Not everyone is going to have the same sense of humor, and that is fine by me. Maybe it's better that way. But I hope they get back on the air somewhere, and as quickly as possibly because with today's technology, chances are no matter where they land, I'll be listening.
