WUFC 1510 to libertarian talk in June

Rojas Sox Beisbol en Espagnol on WCCM-AM 1110 Memorial Day

To revert back to English: the Red Sox game on Memorial Day was broadcast in Spanish on WCCM-AM 1110.

It should be happening this week. Bryan Berner (WILC sister station etc) says: " WUFC will be launching the first week of June. Official announcement on Monday. We on track and have a few exciting announcements! Can't wait to get Boston."

I had asked Berner on Facebook if there were any further details about WUFC; he said an announcement would be made on Monday and there would be future 'exciting' announcements. (So maybe the station launches midweek?)

>>WUFC will be launching the first week of June. Official announcement on Monday.

The orig. press release on Apr 29 or so said it would start in June and there would be Dr K (6a), Glenn Beck (9a?), Jay Mohr at noon, and Alex Jones delayed at midnight. It was said sports would be part of the lineup (college sports, maybe talk shows? Mohr is sports) so maybe Bawstin Diehards continues but delayed? Or is Beck delayed? These are the questions I hope they'll answer on Monday, etc. Bawstin Diehards also on XM (put out by Yahoo Sports Radio) and that may well continue even if they're off on 1510.

>>The station will also air sports news and games from Boston College and Boston University.
Orig press release is at

Look for WUFC 1510 to convert to
syndicated talk radio format

>>Boston, MA-April 28, 2014: Wallis Communications has announced plans to take over WUFC 1510 AM, a 50,000 watt radio station serving the Boston media market. When the new station launches on June 1st, WUFC 1510 AM will become home to a mix of libertarian and personality driven radio shows

I had some hope that the appearance of a second talk station would elevate the level of talkradio in Boston....even though I suspect that 1510AM will be a talk station without much effort behind it.

If there is an alternative to go to when WRKO is running some of it's "paid programs" that would be nice. Might get RKO to actually pay attention to their product.

However, given the history of 1510...and what I hear they have planned for programming, would I be wrong to be ready for disappointment?

Still waiting for the UFC (mixed martial arts) coverage or talk its call letters would suggest. Has anyone there explained why that call was chosen yet?

I always thought that WWZN were cool call letters. But anyway it would be a good stunt if they were WMEX Oldies for a week.

WUFC wanted the last three letters in a different order, but you can't say THAT on radio. (Considering their future line-up though, it would be appropriate...)

UPDATE: Tweet from @bostonradio:

ICYMBI (in case you may be interested): New talk format on 1510 is now targeted for next Mon. (6/9). Confirmed

Mark says no further details but he'll let me/us know once he hears more about the lineup.

Rense

I'd suggest Jeff Rense possibility to the lineup. He doesn't get along with his former friend Jones but he'd be an interesting addition.

If a man says something in a forest and a woman is not there to hear it will he still be wrong?

to say they are signal hampered would be an understatement, Critical hour pattern change will kill any PM drive from November to March, but that is a minor inconvenience compared to their lack of presence in the market

It is one thing to flip a station that is known to the public, and might even have a few listeners, but they could play crickets chirping and it would draw more listeners than that station has had in probably 7 years

If you think real conservative Republicans are a rare item in MA, try finding a Libertarian ( we are the true conservatives BTW)

What??? And risk having the highest cume on 1510 since Garabedian programmed the joint?

That's just plain silly! :)

When are people in "our" age group (I'm 57) going to realize that our ratings no longer matter to corporate commercial radio and (most of) their sponsors? Why do you think CBS switched a successful oldies-turned-classic hits format on WODS to a CHR format that gets only half the numbers? Because they'd rather have half the numbers of twenty-somethings than twice the numbers of us fifty-(and older)-somethings! That's radio in the New Millennium!!

Jones indeed

I don't regard Alex Jones as a Libertarian but I suppose that term is very broadly interpreted.

You are telling it like it is, Eli. I'm 65 and am mad as hell over what CBS did to 103.3 and what Greater Media did to 96.9.

And don't anyone give us this bull@#$% re demographics and ratings and ad dollars ad nauseam. We "geezers" didn't abandon radio; it abandoned us, the very same people who grew up listening to it all these years. Ungrateful bustards who own the stations!

Ad agencies have never been very interested in over-55's. The difference today is that many broadcasters are encumbered with debt and can no longer make a profit serving a less-desirable demo, as, for example, WCRB did for more than half a century.

>>many broadcasters are encumbered with debt and can no longer make a profit serving a less-desirable demo

Clear Channel gave WXKS a try as conservative talk for about 2 and a half years, before eventually (after the gaffe 1200 stunt) doing an LMA of Bloomberg Business Radio (maybe slightly younger demo?). I don't know if the prog talk demos were younger overall than conservative talk, but CC had also tried prog talk on both 1200 and 1430, for two years and two months (10/04 to 12/06) before they got ready to Rumba.

On boston radio interest, Scott Fybush said "wake me if they (WUFC) get a 0.3" and Bob Bittner noted, when I said MAYBE
they could turn a SLIGHT profit) "how can they do that when the tower RENT is $23,000 a MONTH?" What kind of demo
will WUFC bring in with the likes of Dr K, Mohr, Alex Jones, Beck, etc.? Well, we're about to see (maybe they have deep pockets and can stand to keep it going awhile?) as Wallis will switch it next Monday. When a new website is launched for the Wallis LMA, it may look kind of like what they have for WILC Laurel MD

It's not that they think we "geezers" abandoned radio, but they're not interested in programming to them (us) because they seem to believe that the younger demo spends money more freely, impulsively, and perhaps more foolishly than us "geezers". Their fantasy is to court successful young people who always want the flashiest, newest cars, the latest and smartest Smartphones, etc... and who replace everything they own every year to make sure they have the latest model. They think that listeners over 50 are only interested in stairlifts, dentures, and retirement communities (listen to the ads on WBZ AM). We know that's not true, but we aren't young sales people, though by the time we hit "middle age" many of us did realize the value of hanging on to something that may be a few years old that still works rather than constantly replacing everything, and that sensibility does not translate into revenue for sponsors.
