The new 102.9 DRC

Yes! looks like what WDRC used to play is mostly dead in Ct now.I have a feeling that internet radio streaming which is growing is going to become much more popular here in CT.There are still many oldie stations doing well in other states and hopefully that will continue for awhile.WGNY Fox radio oildies is now my choice for oldies until Rocken Ron (Ron Sedaille) gets his own internet show going.

WMRQ is the lowest billing class B FM in Hartford... even less than what WCCC was pulling in.

Why is that? Is it because Modern Rock is a hard format to sell? Or are their ad rates very low? Or is it because they are owned by a small local company and not a big conglomerate like the big C's - CBS, CC, Cumulus, Connoisseur?

All of the above, and more. In addition to having corporate resources, CBS and Clear Channel also own the top stations in key demos. TIC-FM is routinely top 3 in females and persons demos that are desirable. WRCH is dominant. Over at Clear Channel, they've got a killer combo with WKSS and WWYZ. So with top performing stations and vast resources, CBS and Clear Channel take the bulk of the national ad buys.

So what's left? WMRQ can't pull in the big ad prices because they don't have the ratings. While the top performing stations can pull in serious national ad dollars, stations like WMRQ and WDRC have to rely on more local advertising. There just isn't as much local revenue as there is national revenue. The buys are smaller.

WMRQs expenses are seriously minimal though, so I'd bet nobody's losing money. John Fuller is a brilliant business man. He knows how to make money.

I dont know what they did to their signal, but their HD signal is gone and I am now having a hard time picking up the station in my office in downtown Hartford.

Also just get word that DRC caned Kim Z today.

The new owners should write a book and call it "How to kill a radio station in 3 easy steps!"

WDRC and MURPHY! ;)

From the, "You can NOT make this stuff up!!" file...

We had a failure with our EAS receiver last night/today... so I fix it... and put it back. Then I check the backup receiver, and it's good, too. I put that back, too.

Then I try to get a signal. Nothing. The radio had only static, but I tried other stations, and it worked perfectly. So at this point, I had to see if there was something wrong with WDRC, itself... LO AND BEHOLD!!!

Sigh.

Such is the life of an Engineer!! ;)

MURPHY... GO AWAY!!!! ;)

From the, "You can't make this stuff up!!" dept, I present the following TRUE STORY! ;)

When I got to work this morning, I had a "trouble ticket" about the reception of WDRC for our EAS monitor. Sure enough, the radio wasn't working... so I take it to the shop and discover a broken trace on the PC board. Fix it, test it, all's well. I put it back, and it's working. Then I decide to go-over the new monitor unit, that should eventually be replacing the old radio, and optimize it's receiver. In the shop, DRC comes in fine with a 6" piece of wire for an antenna.

Back into the rack it goes... no matter what I do, I can't pull-in DRC at all. Scratching my head, I gave up... we need a better antenna, simple as that. I go into the air studio, and start telling one of my co-workers about it, and press the monitor button for the WDRC signal... HISSSSSS... I'm like... "WHAT??" So I go back and check the radio. It's on 102.9, btu there's nothing coming in... so I try tuning to other stations. No problem. Back to 102.9 Hisssss...

OK, that's it. There's nothing wrong my my equipment... MAYBE there's something wrong with DRC! I look on this board, and sure enough... WDRC IS WORKING ON THEIR ANTENNA!!!!

MURPHY, GO HOME!!! LOL!! ;)

It was an "interesting" day. ;)

Still coming in about the same here in New Britain's south end. Now there's about 10-15 seconds of my life that I'll never get back!

WDRC was replacing their antenna which was in danger of actually falling down. They were running 64W for a couple days

Weren't they putting in a new directional antenna at DRC-FM to allow now co-owned WBZO (103.1) from Long Island to go non-directional? Maybe that work is actually being done.

The directionality at DRC-FM was just a small notch towards WBZO that would probably only make a change over Long Island Sound.
