95.3 "kgy"

Is 95.3 in Olympia branding themselves as 'KGY' even if the AM has been sold off? Do they have some sort of agreement with IHR to continue the branding? I don't live in the south sound anymore so I'm not able to hear the OTA signal.

Thanks

It looks like it. The OTA signal on 95.3 is not much good outside of the Olympia from what I can tell. It does surprise me that a translator station like 95.3 can function as the signal for "KGY 95.3". It seemed like a good deal to have the transmitter site placed a stones throw from the door of the KGY studio.

I've been listening to KGY at work. They've been running spots alerting their AM listeners that they need to switch to 95.3 soon.

Not a bad mix of 60's-70's oldies but not a lot of surprises either...I got spoiled by the KISN good guys but I guess OTA stations can't get away with being that adventurous theses days :( They also run CBS news at the top of the hour. I think the talent is live but they could be VT part of the day too.

Would be nice if they could increase the power of their signal in the future.

Speaking of translators. I've been picking up KHTP on 104.3 in my car driving around Renton and Issaquah. Faint and weak, and it's fighting with the signal of KMNT. Anyone know what is causing this?

Don't quote me on this, but I bet its just spill from 103.7. If you are really close to the transmitter (and can literally see it), you can't shake off the signal. That has been my experience, at least.

KMAS 92.9 translator works better than KGY 95.3 soon to be, it, signal . I think the local aspect of KGY hosts is they are winding down their careers, not in a disrespectful manner, but were hoping for better times when they ended up where they are. You really have to have a working spouse with a decent job to stay in the same area, in the same career path. Same is true of commercial pilots. If you don't make the big time, it takes another income to survive but you stay in it because you love it.

It's a really decent gig if you happen to live in the Olympia area and you happen to be a dj.

I doubt Dick Pust made much, he is in his 70's and probably had just SS to survive. Some go into other ventures like real estate or buy a station.

He has a show or show of shows on KMAS and KXXO if I recall which are similar to the sunday morning interview programs one hears on KZOK or KNDD. When is the big switchover on KGY AM to take place?

He didn't say that (he was probably thinking of Bossbill). Reread his post before you jump to conclusions.

Jumping to no conclusions. My post meant exactly what I asked. I worked with/for Dick for several years, and have been (loosely) close enough to knowing his career that this was a surprise to me.

So far as I know, Dick doesn't own anything in radio, and never has. If anyone knows different, as Fordranger seemed to infer, I'd certainly like to hear about it.

Could be any time. Sellers commonly let buyers take stations over on "LMAs" before a sale is OK'd by the FCC. Whether KGY would do that could be decided on a whim. They might wait until the sale is approved and consummated,

I hope they'd find some way to chronicle the station's legacy before they pull the plug, but I'm not sure how many people would care enough to listen.

When I worked there, we occasionally debated which station was actually the first in Western Washington. It came down to either KJR or KGY, depending on how you wanted to look at it. If I recall right, KGY was the first to put a signal over the air, if you go back to Father Ruth's experimental ham shack. If you looked at which station was the first commercial outlet, I think it then went to KJR.

.... at least, that's how I remember it. These conversations took place in the mid '70s, and I proudly claim age, whenever the finer details escape me! :)

Here's something interesting. KBLE has received authorization to take their Seattle license from commercial to non-commercial status.

If one was to put on his speculation hat, could this be for the purpose of filing a main studio waiver for Olympia? The FCC won't do this for a commercial station.

yeah, remote control it like a K Love operation. Makes sense, KUOW did that with 1340. Don't know what they paid to get the former KVSN freq and transmitter. Odd, since it was a religious broadcaster.

I wasn't inferring anything. I just think that owning a radio station shows that you are successful.

Fair enough.

I'd suggest however, that if you think about it, owning a radio station isn't necessarily any more successful or glamorous than owning any other business. In fact, I've seen enough of them to know that a marginal - to - failing station can be just as stressful, burdensome and time-consuming as anything else.

It's easy to get caught up in the image of these things... especially if you'd like to be on the inside. Having been there, I can tell you it's not much different than anything else. Once you become the owner, EVERYTHING becomes your problem... especially whether you get to write a check for yourself after you pay the rest of the staff. Small stations aren't the money machines (some) may have once been, and there are a lot of moving parts.
