just heard it, and its suppose to be beyonce all the time.. Anyone knows whats up

A damn shame. A lot of very fine people are out on the streets again. This just proves the radio/TV truism that it doesn't matter how good you are at what you do, you will fail if it doesn't make money.

maybe they will go after I heart Media/clear channel and program something like Adult AC ala Sunny 99.1.

"Unfortunately, the market hasn’t shown a sustainable appetite for news radio."

That really says it all. In the other major markets where stations have tried to launch all-news on FM, such as Atlanta, the result has been the same.

Here is the problem that KROI shared with the following now defunct news/talk stations on the FM band. KKHU, 106.9 (U106.9, before they moved to a closer tower). KRTK/KKTL 97.1, (97-Talk-FM) and KFNC 97.5 (FM Newschannel 97.5); all of them were not on a Class C 100KW tower covering all of Houston. You cannot have a successful news/talk station on the FM band unless you get on a Houston stick. That would be almost anything on the Senior Road tower. You have to be able to cover all of Houston. KROI had only 21,000 thousand watts. It operated in mono so the signal could get out further. (We did the same at 97Talk-FM where I produced the Dayna Steele Talk Show while working for Roger Gray.) News 92 had a great line-up of people; as did the aforementioned stations. Without a good signal, it will not work.

I didn't want to say "I told y'all so" when they first flipped this station from gospel, but....

Don't get me wrong, I do feel for the hard-working people there who just lost their jobs. That's the last thing anybody needs to go through in these challenging times. I hope they all get back on their feet real soon.

Explains why the stereo pilot was turned on a few days ago

Yup, I had that sneaky feeling when I first posted about that last week. Surprised that Radio One would telegraph a change in that way.

I always felt that if the news format was dropped, it would come after the peak of the hurricane season. We're now past the point of worrying about any significant storms for this year, so now was the time to make the change.

Gotta wonder if the ratings hit that sister KBXX took from the launch of KQBT was the tipping point. The news format required a sizable staff, and any revenue loss from the other RO stations would have an impact. Any new format could be nothing more than an automated jukebox, comparatively cheap to run.

The eventual new format will be the 4th one for the frequency since Radio One purchased the station in September, 2004 (and that doesn't include the current "B92" stunt or the "90's and More" temporary format in 2004.) Makes the previous 18 1/2 years of Classical on the frequency look like the rock of stability. La Mera Mera was a total misfire, Praise had good numbers but an audience that was too old, and news was too expensive.

Chuck Tiller is right about the signal issues, although KROI has reasonable coverage for the Class C1 equivalent. The Houston market is huge from a geographic standpoint, and the 92.1 tower is too far to the south. If they were on a Missouri City stick with the same signal, they would do fine.

Any guesses as to a new format? Perhaps they may go with something similar to RO sister KSOC in DFW.

And does anyone think RO might sell 92.1? They wouldn't get anywhere near what they paid for it ten years ago. Somewhere Michael Stude is smiling.

The Beyoncé thing is obviously a stunt, very likely this will probably be another top 40/CHR station.

Although I am sad that a Houston new radio station has failed miserably, and I kind of knew the writing was on the wall soon with the low ratings. They consistently got a 0.5-1.2 based on the Arbitron ratings I've seen.

Maybe this new format will likely bring in Ricky Smiley to Houston?

There are too many top 40 stations on the air already. I think either a return to the "Praise" format or Radio One just selling. With that signal, nothing else might work.

92.1 signal sucks great to the south but crap to the north and I think that hurt them. So a new station that is a cross between 96.5 and 104.1 just lame. Time for a classic rap hiphop r&b station already

Wish I had heard the flip. I did tune for a few minutes after 8:30 this morning

I heard they went off right in the middle of an ebola story.

Here's why I think that won't work, besides the signal issue: Any Urban Oldies format, whether it be Old School or Classic Hip-Hop/R&B, would bring down Majic's already high numbers.

Very likely they're going to sell this station out to some owner in the area that isn't at market cap. I don't see any other format that Radio One could turn this into. I also highly doubt they're gonna change this back to Praise 92.1.

Hey Mediafrog, good eye! I'm going to play the lottery this Saturday, care to pick the numbers for me??

Extremely surprised to say the least. I thought, with the large amount of advertisers KROI had under its belt, they were doing alright, poor 6+ ratings or not. A lot of big names are back on the street, and in an emergency situation we are stuck with KTRH again. God help us all.

92's next presumed format: Urban Oldies, which means we'll likely be starting the death clock on 1230 KCOH soon.

Edit to add: I think you can adjust KMJQ's playlist enough as to open up the old R&B favorites (60s-80s) to KROI, and taking Majic more current.

KODA is #1 right now, yes? Look for something to come from RO that pulls numbers from KODA, launching KMJQ or KBXX back to #1. You know RO has got to have payback on their mind for the launch of "The Beat".

Classic rap hiphop r&b station would hurt 102.1 some but if the station were still in the top 7 the station you still be doing pretty good
