Explains why the stereo pilot was turned on a few days ago
Yup, I had that sneaky feeling when I first posted about that last week. Surprised that Radio One would telegraph a change in that way.
I always felt that if the news format was dropped, it would come after the peak of the hurricane season. We're now past the point of worrying about any significant storms for this year, so now was the time to make the change.
Gotta wonder if the ratings hit that sister KBXX took from the launch of KQBT was the tipping point. The news format required a sizable staff, and any revenue loss from the other RO stations would have an impact. Any new format could be nothing more than an automated jukebox, comparatively cheap to run.
The eventual new format will be the 4th one for the frequency since Radio One purchased the station in September, 2004 (and that doesn't include the current "B92" stunt or the "90's and More" temporary format in 2004.) Makes the previous 18 1/2 years of Classical on the frequency look like the rock of stability. La Mera Mera was a total misfire, Praise had good numbers but an audience that was too old, and news was too expensive.
Chuck Tiller is right about the signal issues, although KROI has reasonable coverage for the Class C1 equivalent. The Houston market is huge from a geographic standpoint, and the 92.1 tower is too far to the south. If they were on a Missouri City stick with the same signal, they would do fine.
Any guesses as to a new format? Perhaps they may go with something similar to RO sister KSOC in DFW.
And does anyone think RO might sell 92.1? They wouldn't get anywhere near what they paid for it ten years ago. Somewhere Michael Stude is smiling.
