High School Football on WCKY

Just wondering if anyone noticed that last night's St. Xavier - LaSalle high school football game was broadcast on both WSAI 1360-AM and WCKY 1530-AM? While St. Xavier's games have been on WSAI this season, I thought it interesting that last night's was on WCKY as well. As far as I can remember, this is the first time that station has aired a high school football game (or any high school sporting event). With its 50,000 watts and historic night-time signal, that game between the Bombers and Lancers could have been heard over a large portion of North America - and beyond - last night. Just wondering why it was decided that it was on WCKY as well as WSAI, particularly when WCKY, with its ESPN affiliation could have picked up the American League Championship Series game between Baltimore and Kansas City?

For those wondering if this was the first Cincinnati-area high school football game broadcast on a 50,000-watt station, it is not. Some years back, WLW aired the Division I play-off game between Anderson High and either Moeller or St. Xavier.

I do believe that if it was the same feed, you could be in violation territory.

Not quite sure what you mean with regards to a violation. Please explain. There are times when Cincinnati stations have picked up the same feed and aired it over multiple stations here. The Cincinnati Bengals' broadcasts are an example.

We ran into this a couple of times and our FCC Council was pretty adamant on us not having any program duplications between two AMs in the same market.

As noted, this is done routinely in the Cincinnati market for Bengals' broadcasts including the post-game shows. Both WLW and WCKY - both 50,000-watt stations - carry them during most of the season. The exception is when the Reds' season is still going and WLW originates their games.

I believe that program duplication between two AM stations (or any combination of AM and FM stations) in the same market prohibits simulcasting.
I don't think that high school football games which are broadcast on two AM stations meet the FCC criteria of program duplication.

I think it's technically OK as long as it is less than 25% of the broadcast hours per week. 73.3556 is the rule.

That doesn't make it smart. Just legal.

Ever try to drive through Tennessee while the Vols are playing football and listen to something ELSE on the radio. EVERYONE carries it.
