Jesse Dunn to sell KCOH

Of course the license for 1230 is still held by Liberman, so this is just a sale of the studio facility and intellectual property without FCC involvement. Perhaps a new KCOH owner will exercise the purchase option? Or...look for a lease on a better facility?

KCOH might be "iconic", "venerable", and a "crown jewel" but I would like to hear some opinions from the broader African-American community in Houston. Is it really still an important voice, or has it become an irrelevant relic broadcasting to a tiny number of aging listeners?

I'm afraid it's more the latter, but I hope I'm wrong. It garnered enough attention when 1430 was sold to have community leaders step in and voice their opposition to losing it. Of course, with someone like Sheila Jackson Lee, the motivating factor was likely less about KCOH being saved from the impending doom and more about the opportunity to garner more TV time for herself.

You know, I wonder if Darrell Martin may make a play for the intellectual property of KCOH? With KYOK's impending move to Katy, might we see another move down the dial to 1140 for KCOH? Daytime signal for the new 1140 looks good on paper, better coverage than what KCOH currently has on 1230. Nights would be a problem, not even covering Katy proper with that ridiculously low night power, but it's a start and likely could increase the output at night down the road. It is pointed away from B/CS to protect WTAW, and nulls toward Beaumont to protect what used to be 1150 in Port Neches. A tight night array could cover the right areas without interfering with the neighbors and still hit the right parts of Houston to provide continued service to the Black community.

Wishful thinking on my part. Salt of the Earth can't even keep Beaumont's 990 on the air, why on earth would I think he would start throwing money like that on 1140?

IF Martin would quit snorting coke (according to good sources I have talked to) and IF he was smart (which he doesnt seem to be), he would get rid of 1140 and gone after 1590........OR go after 1230 and move it out of the Ennis site....

1150 Port Neches is still on but is a Class D like 1140 is NOW.....so no protection allowed....1150/KZNE the FORMER WTAW (which is on 1620) is the signal everyone has to protect (along with WJBO Baton Rouge; who just built a new DA and get 20KW daytime now but is nulling more to the west than before....)

IF the DAMN FCC would force 1150 in CSB on like they were supposed to when TAW moved to EXband, either Conroe or PN could move ONE channel and get Class B and power coverage....(PN still could if the lying mexican preachers were smart....but again....I am not saying thay have ever been smart! :) LOL

990s on the air........just needs some serious fixing.....which Martin will NOT spend the money on

Forget about the proposed 1140 facility for KCOH...that signal would be better for Asian language programming during the day...the proposed night signal is worthless. The current 1230 hits the desired demos which I suspect are much older, inner-city folks...and a better facility would be more expensive to lease (thinking KXYZ.)

Of course you mean that KZNE should have been forced off, not on, but I agree it should've been enforced. Maybe that's why I can't get WTAW off of 1150 in my head. It really should've been how 1150 was sent off into the sunset, but I digress. Makes one wonder why 1010's ex-band was never utilized. Univision could've had an extra AM property right now, or at least done what they did with 980 and sell it for profit.

There sure is a lot of future Asian programming on your dial, Frog. You're right, there's no way my speculating will ever come to fruition, more than likely KYOK will extend the reach of flagship KWWJ, as 1140 in Katy will capture the western areas of Houston that struggle with reception of 1360. Never made sense to run two separate gospel formats in the first place, and KYOK's been running on autopilot for a couple of years now...that is WHEN it's actually running, lol.

Disagree. Dr. Stanford would benefit more from an outright purchase of a Houston facility, than from a lease agreement with LBI. The search is on, and the safe money is riding on MJWJ. I have faith they will find a suitable home for the network before the end of next year.

Yes, I meant off but typed on...Oops!! :)

IF Univision has been smart (and thats assuming a lot again!), should have pushed for the Exband allocation, said bye bye to 1010, and the directional array (I would take omni at 1K over a higher power but highly directional signal anyday! especially on an QUIET Exband channel!). However, the FCC was the final voice in who got what and the Exband petition by 1010 was evidently turned down...I dont see where a CP was issued..The Exband rules that opened the band to signal moving were screwy as hell (point system and was supposed to promote Ds with BIG day power but flea power at night to move to lighten the load on the legacy band...and some of the decisions made a lot of people scratch their head(s)....
Nice idea BUT as we all know, what man makes, usually gets screwed up.

Oh well......
