Looking For Internet Soft AC Streams

I didn't know this was on the AC board too. That works better.

After giving a second look to the list of songs posted previously, I see only three or four of them wouldn't fit the standards format, so I guess they aren't totally out of place here. But the first people I saw were Daughtry, Debbie Gibson and Lynyrd Skynyrd and those are way off.

These AC's I've mentioned so far are going by over-all sound.

---------------------------

The over-all sound of these is soft and easy and the Debbie Gibson song wouldn't be out of place but the Daughtry song and the Lynyrd Skynyrd song would be out of place.

Lite 99

Radio Qupid

--------------------------

These are what I call a hybrid. Some songs on the station are soft and easy but there are also some edgier songs in the mix and that's because their listeners are interested in hearing with both. Therefore, on these hybrid stations the Daughtry song and the Lynyrd Skynyrd song wouldn't be too out of place.

The commercial-free AC's I'm most interested in having suggestions for are ones like the first list (Soft N Easy Net Radio and Lite 99 and Radio Qupid). Those on the first list are Soft AC's and therefore they fit more on this board than they do on the other AC boards here.

This is a station I plan to check out after the Christmas switch: http://mradio105fm.com/

I emailed the station about certain current artists I like. They do have some and some they don't have yet.

Lynyrd Skynyrd...maybe. Traditional soft AC's play Debbie Gibson's "Lost In Your Eyes" (I play that particular track on Lite 99, as do many other "old school" soft AC stations). As far as Daughtry goes, maybe/maybe not as far as it fitting within a soft AC format. You have to remember...traditional soft AC is a hybrid
format of the easy listening and adult contemporary formats. It has elements of both formats...being neither full-fledged easy listening but not full-fledged AC, either. Accordingly, some of the music that one hears on a traditionally-based soft AC station isn't going to always sound "easy listening" in nature i.e. similar to Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow music. Take the group Chicago, for instance. Some of their older material is pretty lite, but much of their later material is quite harder, but it would still fit within a soft AC format. For instance, Lite 99 plays some of Chicago's harder edge songs such as "If She Would Have Been Faithful" and "I Don't Wanna Live Without Your Love". Not all traditional soft AC's play those two songs by Chicago, but I don't see any reason as to why they would not "fit", formatically-speaking. Again, not every song within a soft AC format is supposed to sound like "easy listening" because, ultimately, soft AC is not an "easy listening" format, even though many listeners might equate it as such. Also, I wouldn't necessarily discount music for a soft AC format based strictly upon artist. Each song really has to be evaulated as to whether it is suitable for the format...so it's possible that, depending on song style, even some Daughtry and Lynyrd Skynyrd songs could be aired within a soft AC format, even though the vast majority of their music might not be. A good example of this, as someone mentioned not long ago on the board here, was KISS. I know most traditionally-based soft AC's air "Beth" by KISS, so no...it's really not a good idea to refuse to play certain artists within a soft AC format. Here's another example: Peter Gabriel. Yes, most of Gabriel's music would be impossible to use within a soft AC format, but this song could be incorporated.

In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel

Vchimpanzee,

Another reason why I put this discussion here is because the Soft AC's on the first list (Soft N Easy Net Radio and Lite 99 and Radio Qupid), would have been considered the equivalent of an easy listening format in the 80s and 90s.

I am glad that you enjoy Joy 99.5. It is a labor of love from two radio geeks in Orlando, Florida who simply love the music and wanted to keep the format alive and accessible via the Internet.

The AC format in my neck of the woods plays more upbeat pop music like Paula Abdul, Madonna, and Prince and they rarely play the slower stuff like Chicago, Air Supply, Billy Joel, Elton John and Barry Manilow as often like they used to. That's why I'm grateful that Soft AC is still alive and accessible via the Internet.

Excellent points made.

Many people I know called 80s and 90s Soft AC stations easy listening because it was the easiest spot on the radio at the time. They also called it soft rock because core artists included Elton John, Billy Joel, Chicago, and Fleetwood Mac.

That Debbie Gibson song, yes. Not the one that was listed.

The problem I have with the thread being here (or would have if it was only here) is that all this music that is "acceptable" on AC is being declared "acceptable" to those of us who insist on a real easy listening sound, even if it includes the softer artists of the 80s version of soft AC. It's like saying we need to accept those songs, which I won't.

LOL! And what do you consider a "real" easy listening sound?

Just as a sample, I'll just use what ' been posted here, though I would actually prefer something easier than this:

Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Josh Groban, Michael Buble, Neil Diamond, The Carpenters, Barry Manilow, etc.

Lady Love Me - George Benson
Sister Golden Hair - America
Colors Of The Wind - Vanessa Williams
I'll Still Be Loving You - Restless Heart
All Of You - Julio Iglesias
I Go Crazy - Paul Davis

That's not easy enough for you? What would you prefer that's easier than that?

I'm a listener who likes to hear certain selections by new pop artists.

Such songs I like are:

Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway
David Cook - Time Of My Life
Train - Marry Me
Coldplay - Viva La Vida
Evanescense - My Immortal
Christina Perri - A Thousand Years
Colbie Caillat - Bubbly
Taylor Swift - Teardrops On My Guitar
Jason Mraz - I Won't Give Up
Leona Lewis - Better In Time

But I want to hear my old favorites such as Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Josh Groban, Michael Buble, Neil Diamond, The Carpenters, Barry Manilow, etc. in a soft rock setting (rather than Standards or Oldies or Classic Hits).

These Soft AC's are designed for such a listener as me. You may not find them easy but I definitely do and many other listeners that enjoy such a format do too.

Yes, those songs you mentioned would be considered "easy listening" by most radio listeners (for our discussion in here, though, we would refer to it as soft AC). I believe from what you've posted on the board in the past that you are more interested in adult standards. Even though adult standards and soft AC overlap quite a bit (and much more so than they did years ago), soft AC entails covers quite a bit more musical territory, so many listeners wanting to hear soft AC wouldn't want to hear adult standards, and vice versa. Personally, I listen to adult standards. As I'm sure you're aware from my being in the yahoo BIV group, I grew up listening to big band and "beautiful music" and those are great formats; if it weren't for my interest in those styles of music, Beautiful QEZ wouldn't be here today. However, I don't want to listen to a mix of adult standards and soft AC. I want to hear one or the other, at least while listening in one setting.

I have listened to Joy 99.5 and enjoy it as well. I have noticed it tends to be a little more adventureous than most traditional soft ACs. Since you are both from Orlando, is Joy 99.5 based on the former soft AC there in Orlando, Joy 108 FM?

Exactly. While I also like both, I don't want to hear a mix of both either in one setting.

This is one that combines both: http://www.ezdoesitradio.com/
Quite frankly, some of the standards selections got a little too cheesy for my tastes.
