Indianapolis: CBS Moving from WISH to WTTV 1/1/2015

One major notice is the 7-9 pm magazine block: Inside Edition, Entertainment Tonight, Extra, and Access Hollywood!!

WISH will probably be the only station in the country to have all four of these shows back-to-back-to-back-to-back.

SHOCKER: WISH-TV announced tonight that it will carry the CW affiliation, effective January 1st.

WISH-TV’s President and General Manager Les Vann is proud to announce the station’s new entertainment programming, effective January 1, 2015. The schedule includes The CW network in prime time, plus a new line-up of morning game shows and afternoon talk shows.

“We welcome the CW network to our new prime time,” said Vann. “This original and dynamic line-up of programming will drive new audiences to WISH-TV and our newscasts, and deliver key demographics to our advertisers.”

So what happens to 4.2/29.2?

UPDATE: It appears WTTV has sold the CW affiliation to WISH-TV. The CW feared being on a subchannel would cost them viewership in a large market like Indy.

Tribune Media Announces Sale of CW Network Affiliation in Indianapolis

Tribune Media Company today announced the sale of its CW network affiliation in Indianapolis to Media General, Inc. As a result of the transaction, Media General will acquire the CW affiliation beginning on January 1, 2015. Specific financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Today's announcement takes place against the backdrop of a prior agreement between Tribune Media and CBS by which, as of January 1, 2015, the CBS affiliate in the Indianapolis area will begin broadcasting on Tribune Media's WTTV (Channel 4). Given this, The CW was scheduled to move from its current location on Channel 4 to Tribune Media's digital multicast channel WTTV 4.2. This move would have resulted in a loss of approximately half of The CW's Indianapolis household distribution since .2 networks are not carried by telecom or satellite providers in this market.

UPDATE: It appears WTTV has sold the CW affiliation to WISH-TV. The CW feared being on a subchannel would cost them viewership in a large market like Indy.

More like the new Media General ownership quickly fixing the idiocy the old LIN bosses caused as best they could. Though I'm sure the CW's fears of being stuck on channel 240 on cable and being booted off satellite were definitely there, the fear that WISH could quickly become like KTRV in Boise and just have to abandon their news department at a massive loss months after losing Fox as only the low-tier advertisers wanted on there was there too. KRON's decay was at least gradual and buffeted by their market, but KTRV is definitely an equivalent example of what WISH could've been without the CW affiliation.

Most of all, Tribune can likely offload some product meant for 4.2 onto WISH/WNDY for cheap; I assume 4.2 will remain, but will become like Chicago's U-Too in burning off rights to shows that got forced on them by Tribune and the Entertainment Studios court shows before quietly getting replaced a few months down the line.

The first sporting event on WTTV as a CBS affiliate will be the Colts' Wild Card game against Cincinnati at 1pm Sunday. Also, Tribune just grabbed the rights to Colts preseason games from WISH.

WXIN-WTTV To Carry Indianapolis Colts

Beginning next season, all of the Colts pre-season games will be broadcast on either Tribune’s WXIN (Fox) or WTTV (CBS). In addition, Colts-produced programs such as The Coaches Show with Chuck Pagano and Colts Up Close will air on WXIN and WTTV.

The new WNDY-TV 23 schedule:
http://wishtv.com/myindy-tv/

Notable are the extra hours of Paid Programming (ugh), a same day rerun of Indy Style at 1 pm, and (oddly?) an overnight Canadian block (at least it's not Paid Programming). No news in the new schedule. I think they should have kept either a simulcast or a delayed presentation of news for at least one hour a day.

Perhaps as some of the rights for syndicated shows that are moving from 4.1 to 4.2 expire (and apparently Tribune plans to let them expire) Media General can pick up a few of the more desirable shows for WNDY.

Also both WTTV and WXIN will be airing the Super Bowl every 2 out of 3 years (starting with Super Bowl 50 in 2016) for Tribune that's got to be impressive. FYI the impending switch to CBS for WTTV is in 6 minutes.

I streamed the NYE countdown show from their website; pretty good so far though as with any new station, plenty of bugs to work out. Glad to see though that they'll use their own unique graphics/music; most rushed affiliates just throw on Enforcer/Tower/Eyewitness/FANT and the default graphics and call it a day, but WTTV looks good so far. No newscast yet, but judging from their channel position and Tribune's work before day 1, they should be pretty good and competitive.

From goldrich on AVS Forum:

Very good news for the new WTTV/CBS4. So far, I haven't seen any local market (Indy) numbers, which should be huge.

“THE NFL ON CBS” BROADCAST OF INDIANAPOLIS’S WIN OVER DENVER IS SECOND-HIGHEST-RATED SUNDAY AFC DIVISIONAL PLAYOFF GAME IN 19 YEARS

And their newscasts are starting out strong:

Tribune officials’ promotional strategy seems to be working early on. WTTV’s 11 p.m. local newscast is already battling for the No. 2 spot. While WTTV is in close competition with WISH, WXIN and WRTV-TV Channel 6 at 11 p.m., WTHR remains the ratings leader at 11 p.m. and most other times by a fairly wide margin.

Adding local anchor Debby Knox, formerly of WISH, and veteran weathercaster Chris Wright, formerly of WISH and WTHR, has helped WTTV get off to a fast start, media buyers said.
