I sure don't care... Spot check last night around 8 pm "Light My Fire" was on
KSWD is advertising for a third person to work the morning show with Mark Thompson and Andy Chanley beginning in January. Morning man Joe Benson will move to middays. His ratings have almost doubled in the past year. It's possible that he'll do equally well in middays and it's possible that Mark Thompson will maintain the high ratings of the morning show. Possible...but not likely. What is KSWD thinking???
It's the former... Mark will be using his home studio and probably ISDN in South Carolina to provide his voice to this new gig on The Sound not unlike Bean from Kevin & Bean has been doing for years on KROQ.
What I don't get is why. Minus the podcast with his wife he's been doing (which I haven't listened to one second of) I thought Mark's intention was to ride out into the sunset and retire from the daily radio grind. Everyone has a right to change their mind on their personal career choices sure but what I don't get is why Mark now has this desire to get some skin back in the Los Angeles radio game from over 2,000 miles away 2 years after he abandoned it in the first place. Home life and retirement must either be boring or deep down Mark still has that radio itch he needs scratched.
Because he's out on the right coast and the time difference it's not like the hours would be horrible. Roll out of bed around 8 or 9am and be done by lunchtime all from the comforts of his own home. He doesn't even have to take a shower if he doesn't want to because as of yet radio has no smell-o-vision. I just don't see this lasting very long which makes it's creation even more baffling to me. The Sound hasn't been much of a chatterbox gabfest in the mornings and I believe the people listening prefer it that way.
Then again, it could just be Mark voice tracking in some filler and anecdotes in between music tracks and collecting a paltry paycheck for it. What is abundantly clear with this announcement is Mark has zero intentions of working with Brian Phelps ever again. Based on the stories of their relationship over the years at KLOS that bridge was torched ages ago and the Earth salted so it would never grow again.
Well I checked out his podcast with his wife called Mark and Lynda and it is really boring. They have had 4 years of marriage counseling they say for their marriage so that makes them experts at relationships. They offer relationship counseling to those that need it. Sounds like Mark needs relationship counseling with Brian. What's the scoop on them.
???? I am thinking this gig won't work for Mark in Charlotte, NC..near where he lives.. I think he needs to be in LA.. Maybe Bonneville is hoping he will patch things up with Brian and they will do a show again.
Every time Brian's name comes up, the answer should be the same: "I am very proud of the accomplishments of the Mark and Brian program; I wish Brian well in his future endeavors and I am looking forward to my next project." Not hard to do my friend.
Absolutely correct, K.M.
It's on page 332 of the "Broadcasting Human Resources" manual:
"I (or we) wish (name here) well in his (or her) future endeavors."
I just heard the most ridiculous promo on the Sound. I love these promos where the "listeners" are giving their favorable reviews on the station. Very genuine. Anyway, in this one, a 20-something sounding female says how she loves the Sound because it is "so much more organic" than the competition.
Oh yes, how she has nailed that one. I just hate how KLOS puts all those artificial flavors and preservatives when they play "Foreplay/Long Time" by Boston. It really harshes my karma. I want to rail to the corporate man about this. Where is Ladd when you need him? The Sound is so much more pure. When they play "Lay Down Sally" for the thousandth time, I feel so much more wholesome.
I now see where the Sound's ratings increase is coming from: patchouli-loving Whole Foods Market shoppers who insist on purity in their classic rock.
Perhaps she prefers organs to guitars and horns. Then again, she may have meant "orgasmic." Mystery to me.
