Where would the format hole be in St. Louis? Active Rock? All News? Classic Country?

BTW - I'm sorta new to St. Louis and was shocked when I found out Clear Channel has Z107. That is the worse "Top-40" station I have ever heard. They really stay away from the EDM mixes. They also play a lot more Hot AC cuts than most CC top 40 stations play. I'm thinking of Power 961 Atlanta, Z100 New York and even Kiss in LA.

The whole iHeart cluster is a mess. Wild 104.9 should be a true rhythmic, but just shares its whole playlist with Z107-7 and 100.3 The Beat... which could use a few more shares themselves. KLOU did well with Christmas music, but that book was built with the help of Mason and Remy... who are now off in Chicago. I agree, the Z107-7 playlist is extremely slow to update... Y107 in Columbia is on new music a month or so before Z. And because of their effort to keep old Majic listeners while add hip-hop listeners, 100.3 The Beat is the absolute worst classic hip-hop station I've heard - and the numbers show it.

If I were Emmis, I'd get active rock on 97.1, and completely own the rock audience in St. Louis. If I were iHeart, I'd follow the formula they used to launch KQBT/Houston to launch an urban on 104.9 - by using some WHHT alumni in the process to gain quick legitimacy. Like most well-performing classic hits stations, KLOU needs a powerhouse morning show to drive listenership throughout the day. With Wild out of the picture, Z107-7 can freshen up the playlist, and perhaps put the Evolution EDM format on 103.7. And at 100.3, ditch the remaining urban AC from the playlist to go true classic hip-hop.

If only...

I'm not sure Emmis going active with any station is a good thing and let me tell you why. 105.7 The Point is a very unique "alternative" station. The station technically is a alternative/active hybrid. It leans active during the day and alternative at night. Most alternative stations would not touch papa roach, Metallica or slipknot but The Point does. I think this method of riding the active/alternative fence has prevented CC or other stations trying an active or true alternative rock format in St. Louis. If anything, Emmis could go back to a "rock" format on K-SHE instead of classic rock but they won't do that because the newer harder rock would pull from the 105.7 shares UNLESS 105.7 basically drops the harder active rock and goes straight alternative like 96.5 The Buzz in KC. I don't see that happening though because The Point has always positioned itself on that alternative/active rock fence and it has worked well considering how long the format has lasted in STL.

Iheart/CC needs to revamp Z107 and it could easily be done. All they need to do is go more in the newer and dance direction. Perfect example: Z107 is playing Sam Smith. Well, so is Z100 and Power 961 but the difference is they play the remix version and not the ballot that belongs on Hot AC stations.

Iheart/CC could try All News on 104.9 but not sure how well that will go. Look, I've lived in a few cities and still keep up with the radio formats in those towns via online. St. Louis really doesn't have any format holes. St. Louis is one of the few cities I can honestly say that every format is covered. However, it's the formats that are being attempted that could use a revamp. Emmis seems to be doing well. While I'm not a fan of Z107, I do think they are doing okay. I still think they could do much better though. 1049 has to go but I'm not sure where it would need to go. What format? Only one that comes to mind is all news but not sure if that will work either.
