Big Boy cleared by Judge to join KRRL. Real 92.3

I'm very familiar with Los Angeles County Courthouses. I read articles all the time. L.A. County is so overwhelmed with lawsuits. This is a big win for Alexander. The reason. It will take Emmis. Probably a year to go to court. If I was Emmis. I would be ticked.

And I'm sure Jeff Smulyan is not terribly happy.

Please share where you get your "understanding" from about Cruz. I wouldn't know a good hip-hop morning jock if he bit me.

Anyone have any sources at iHeart to find out when Big Boy starts? My guess -- not a prediction -- is that they'd try to time the commercial-free song marathon to end around 7:00am and have him take over then.

When does the spring book start? How about March 26?

In Fresno and Albuquerque and other non-PPM markets, it starts the tail end of March. Count 84 days from Jan 1

In LA, it would make sense to start on the 5th, 12th or 19th of March if they want to synchronize with PPM weeklies.

I apologize If my post are not professional. Im just a blogger. And I enjoy taking part in this forum. I do my best to post information relevant to the site. Again I'm no professional. If I offended anyone my apology. I have edited out some of my comments.

It does seem like spelling, punctuation and grammar have become lost arts. Heck, I am so old school that I still type two spaces after a period. :)

Don Barrett to the rescue again. Got an e-mail from him a few minutes ago that says Mr. Alexander starts Monday. Confirmed by Billboard and AllAccess.

Seems fairly close to the end point of 10,000 "joints", which started at 9:23am on February 5. Didn't someone estimate in the other thread it would take about a month?

It'll be interesting to see how well Big Boy does at KRRL when the March 2015 PPMs come out. Then again they could end up like KQBT and WMIB after they started out in which they had good numbers before crashing back down to earth. Either way, KPWR won't be affected even if KRRL makes a impact in the books.

Along with their February 3 request for an injunction to prevent Big Boy from going to Real 92.3, Emmis asked for $5,000,000 in damages. I'm not a lawyer, nor do I play one on tv, but the way I interpret the judge's decision, iHeartMedia could still wind up having to pay damages. Is that correct?

Yes and no, Steve. The judge's lifting of the restraining order yesterday did not dismiss the lawsuit itself, which will play out in the coming months. However, Emmis is suing Alexander, not iHeart, so he would be responsible personally for any judgment against him, unless iHeart has agreed to cover same (which we're not likely to be able to find out before the fact as it would have been part of confidential discussions over his contract).

Story link with quotes from iHeartMedia Pres./Southern California Pres. Greg Ashlock, Big Boy, iHeartMedia SVP/Urban Programming, REAL 92.3 PD Doc Wynter and iHeartMedia SVP/Major Markets Andrew Jeffries:

http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/a...boy-to-start-in-mornings-at-krrl-on-march-9th

The March 2015 PPM survey period covers the dates of Thu. Feb. 26 through Wed. Mar. 25.
Thus, Big Boy's show will be on for thirteen (week)days of the period; generally speaking, likely not quite enough time to make a blockbuster showing in the March ratings. April 2015 (Thu. Mar. 26 - Wed. Apr. 22) will be his first full report.

As for the overall Real 92.3 station performance for its first few weeks, keep in mind that the format flip occurred on Fri. Feb 6 while the February 2015 PPM survey period ran from Thu. Jan. 29 through Wed. Feb. 25. Thus, the new format ran for 20 of the 28 days of the February period.

Surely iHeart was hoping that Big Boy could have started sooner after his Emmis contract expired on Sat. Feb 28...so it looks as if it could wind up being one week later than planned. Although, one could question whether iHeart's hand was forced into changing format earlier than planned once Emmis disclosed the breach of contract lawsuit on Feb. 5 -and/or- if iHeart already had the "10,000 Joints in a Row" standard-issue jockless format-starter already in place, which would have ended close to the March 9 Big Boy show launch date anyway.

1. I just want to be able to read what he has to say without getting a headache. 32james has brought perspective on several occasions to discussions which are unique and valid.

2. Careful who you name call around here. We've just been through that in the other thread on this topic.

You were never called a name by anyone.

Here is what I believe will happen.

1. listener's who are upset that Uncle Joe isn't on in mornings on KSWD. And have to put up with mostly talk will leave.

2. Listeners who are upset KHHT. Is no longer playing "hot" music. Pun intended. Will leave.

3. These 2 groups of listeners will converge on K-earth. The reason, it appeals to both groups. Every other song is either a top 40 classic or rock classic. Like Donna summer or Michael Jackson. Those would appeal to Hot listeners.

The Eagles, stevie nicks, or rolling stones will appeal to KSWD Listeners.

So every other song they will probably just stick around for. Those 2 groups. Thus raising KRTH, ratings for the next couple months.

And yes K.M. I forgive you.

I think history proves you right on that one. This has happened before -- twice, in fact -- in Uncle Joe Benson's tenure in Los Angeles radio, both times during his run on KCBS-FM in the "Arrow 93" days.

The first time was in the summer 2001, when they brought in Bob Rivers from Seattle to do mornings. Uncle Joe moved to afternoon drive. That lasted all of eleven days (July 2-16), and Benson moved back to mornings. The situation at KSWD is reminiscent of this ... my recollection is that the audience was somewhat less than enamored at Rivers' comedic bits and chatter displacing the long music sets Benson had been playing.

The second time was when Jonathon Brandmeier was hired to do mornings in April, 2004. Uncle Joe moved to afternoons (again) and stayed there until the flip to "Jack FM" 11 months later.

A couple of months after that flip, Uncle Joe went back to KLOS (he had been there for most of the previous 17 years, except for 20 months over at KLSX in 1995-96) in afternoons. He left that gig for KSWD.

2. Listeners who are upset KHHT. Is no longer playing "hot" music. Pun intended. Will leave.

Ha. Right again ... they left when the first "joint" started playing. I doubt 92.3 kept 10% of its audience through the flip.

That's probably their best possible choice for the moment, provided they like hearing "Hotel California". :D

And yes K.M. I forgive you.

Thanks. Tell that to the guy with two whole posts who indirectly called me a "nutjob", even if ChannelFlipper doesn't appear to have noticed.

And do continue to post, please. I meant what I said about hearing your perspectives.
