Bob Schieffer Retiring From CBS News This Summer

Correct, because of the mandatory retirement age.
Cronkite's 'mandatory retirement' was from 'Evening News', rather than the network as a whole, and was more like semi-retirement(he was given an 'emeritus' status); after stepping down as 'Evening News' anchor, he continued to host the science show 'Universe' for another year, and made numerous appearances on news programs and specials for another two decades. When Charles Schulz died in 2000, Cronkite hosted a tribute program, which I believe ended up being his swan song with CBS.PTBoardOp94 said:

New Anchor Prediction: Norah O'Donnell.
You mean for 'Face The Nation'? That would not be a good fit. She is bright and extremely pretty, but WWWAAAAYYYYYY too confrontational. A lot of guests would decline to do the show, and she lacks the perspective and self awareness to be good in that role. It would likely lead to the end of her career if she moves to that now.
I think she is in a good place on the Morning News. I think your prediction may be correct, but it won't be a good move for either the network or her, but I'm hard pressed to come up with another name, unless they give it to Charlie Rose for a year or two while O'Donnell gets more perspective and maturity.
She is on the cusp of what could be a pretty impressive career, but she needs to get a dose of humility.

Exactly. Face The Nation is a DC-based show, so the best host would be someone well known in DC, like Bill Plante. Although Bill isn't a young guy either.
Sad news, but he is quite old.
It's really unusual to still be a regular on network news programs at that age. He and Barbara Walters have both been so active at a time when most people would have trouble getting around.
