Bob Schieffer Retiring From CBS News This Summer

Bob Schieffer, the anchor of CBS News’ Face The Nation, announced Wednesday that he will retire this summer. Schieffer, 78, has been with CBS News for 46 years and this year marked his 24th anchoring CBS’ Sunday Beltway show, which finished out 2014 as the highest-rated show of the genre for a third consecutive year. He made the announcement tonight at the annual Schieffer Symposium at Texas Christian University, his alma mater, explaining, “Because this is where my professional career began, this is where I wanted all of you to be the first to know, this summer I am going to retire,” according to CBS News coverage of the confab.

46 years, wow. I don't think even Cronkite was at CBS for 46 years.

Correct, because of the mandatory retirement age.

Cronkite's 'mandatory retirement' was from 'Evening News', rather than the network as a whole, and was more like semi-retirement(he was given an 'emeritus' status); after stepping down as 'Evening News' anchor, he continued to host the science show 'Universe' for another year, and made numerous appearances on news programs and specials for another two decades. When Charles Schulz died in 2000, Cronkite hosted a tribute program, which I believe ended up being his swan song with CBS.
So, even his 'post-retirement' phase was more active than the latter stages of some CBS guys' 'active' careers...and, with two decades after his last newscast, he came just shy of 50 years between his first and last appearances on CBS TV(he started there in 1951, after working for the radio division for most of the 40s, so his career with the network indeed surpassed Schieffer's still-impressive 46 years.)

You mean for 'Face The Nation'? That would not be a good fit. She is bright and extremely pretty, but WWWAAAAYYYYYY too confrontational. A lot of guests would decline to do the show, and she lacks the perspective and self awareness to be good in that role. It would likely lead to the end of her career if she moves to that now.

I think she is in a good place on the Morning News. I think your prediction may be correct, but it won't be a good move for either the network or her, but I'm hard pressed to come up with another name, unless they give it to Charlie Rose for a year or two while O'Donnell gets more perspective and maturity.

She is on the cusp of what could be a pretty impressive career, but she needs to get a dose of humility.

Sad news, but he is quite old.

It's really unusual to still be a regular on network news programs at that age. He and Barbara Walters have both been so active at a time when most people would have trouble getting around.
