What's 790 going to do?

If they stay sports, most likely CBS sports. I know Cumulus distributes it and most likely the commercials were cleared on 680 for Atlanta. I am sure Cumulus / Dickey would rather sell a commercial rather than pay network spots for "free". That does not take into account the rumors of CBS getting 94.1 and 790 in some kind of station swap or trade.

Wouldn't that put Jon Kincaid in the same position he was in a couple of years ago. He quit his ESPN Sunday show and moved to CBS Sports radio. That way his national show wasn't on a competing station in the market. My guess would be NBC sports radio, again, if they stay sports.

WQXI 790 is loosing ESPN radio next week. Does anyone know what is going to take its place?

Not only is 790 loosing ESPN, but they are also losing it.

790 is going to simulcast Star 94 temporarily. They say they haven't decided what to do with the station on a long-term basis. Leaving ESPN Radio was not 790's decision; it was taken away from them.

I am not doubting Roddy about ESPN being taken away from them, but this has to be some kind of deal we are not being told about . Looking at it from ESPN's view, I would rather have a 28 K daytime signal in Atlanta with significantly lower dial position , than 2 1 KW stations on local channels with Atlanta's poor soil conductivity. The only thing I can think of the Dickey's are PAYING some serious money for ESPN's programming.

Another weird part of the deal form 790's point of view, what about the sales folks that are selling (or pushing numbers). From personal experience if takes time to build a client list. All I can guess is 790 will not going back to sports in several years.

What's interesting is that 680 is already advertising that the entire World Series will be on their station when this horrid Braves season is over. So, I guess, WCNN will get to cherry pick the national events that ESPN runs on radio (NFL Football, College Football Championship Series, NBA game of the week and playoffs). Since a lot of these big games are played at night, The Fan makes more sense for ESPN than 790. Just a thought.

Very similar to the WQXI-AM-FM simulcast 1989-90, in between 790's "Golden Oldies" format and the nostalgia format launched in early 1990.

How does losing a 24/7 ESPN station with a good signal benefit ESPN Radio? No daytime programming will be cleared on 680 during the week and 1230 out of Marietta is a joke for most of the metro. There was other sports options for 790 and they choose a Star simlucast. Curious as to what John Kincaid does based on an earlier thread. Since 93.7 gets killed out of Greenville and Macon i guess i am thankful for Tmobiles free streaming of radio.com. When 92.9 gets too boring then i will go to cbs sports radio. Ferrall and Amy Lawrence are better for me. I try to catch Farrell wherever he is.

The new PD Mike Fowler said for now they are going to simulcast Star 94. He isn't sure what they are going to do next.

Well, they could have just substituted NBC Sports or Yahoo Sports when they lost ESPN. Both networks are 24/7 and have no Atlanta affiliate. Simulcasting a 100,000 watt FM station seems a waste.

ESPN Probably Barter...

as most syndicated radio services are. Most likely they weren't getting the ratings that the national advertisers wanted. Therefore, it got yanked!
Simulcasting with 94.1 does seem like a waste. As 95.5 simulcasting with WSB 750 does also.
They could go Oldies format but it would probably be difficult to compete with that commercial free Oldies station at the upper end of the dial.

I do not have access to the ratings that long ago, but IIRC they were not #1 or 2 (6+) when they were one 750 alone. WSB was around 5th or 6th (6+). I know 6+ has no sales value but statically if you are #1 or 2 (6+) you should to show up competitively in a couple of money demos. WCBS FM has a really old audience, but it is so large that they do have money demo numbers to sell.

IMHO Cox will have to find something to put on 750 when the FCC approves 95.5's application to move 95.5 in town:

"commercial free Oldies station at the upper end of the dial"???

Which one is that?

Observation: 94.1 seems about 10-15 seconds behind 790 AM.

The FM is delayed because of HD radio. To make the analog and HD signal stay in sync, the analog is delayed about 9 seconds. There is no delay on AM other than going through a digital processor.

Great, by listening to Star 94 at 790 AM I get a jump on the competition and have an even better chance at being Caller 10! "Quixie in Dixie" is back!

How is the new legal ID phrased? I keep trying to catch it online but somehow miss it every time.[/QUOTE said:
The ID is fairly simple, not much more than "WSTR-FM, Smyrna & WQXI-AM Atlanta," followed by a shotguy-style Star 94 jingle.
