Seattle-Tacoma Radio Ratings: September 2015

When KUBE was top forty in the 80's they'd tell you just how much minutes of music they played in an hour each hour. I remember it being more than 50 minutes every time.

I was reading about the CHR days of KUBE the other day; "51 Minutes... or $10,000!"

I constantly had one hand on the tuning knob ready to go to the next station as soon as something came on that was not a song I wanted to hear.

It seems pretty logical to me to keep a radio station moving without any pauses, stops, or breaks in the flow. Still, there are stations out there that still take genuine breaks.

If your competition is beating you with more music, I can't think of a feature you can add, other one that provides free sex, that will beat it.

Features are something you do from the confidence of first place. But if you have an example, I'm open to listen.

OK, Big A - explain to the class why all stations who AREN'T #1 just jettison their morning shows and go wall to wall music? And yes, we know that SOME do that - my question to you is why don't ALL do it if it's so successful?

It depends on the situation. You're looking for a one-size-fits-all solution, and you can't do that in radio.

In this particular situation, there are two stations in the country format. Not many other stations where you have that kind of direct format competition.

In a competition, you don't win by getting fat. You win by playing lean. That's what I'm suggesting.

late to the party, but I'm not understanding why there is a backlash against krwm for playing "current" music. If you look at KRWM's playlist for the last month and compare it to two of the top AC stations in the country, WLTW New York and KODA Houston, they're playing the same stuff. There's even an argument to be made that Warm is MORE conservative than these other two stations. You have to get to KRWM's 28th most played song to find something that neither WLTW or KODA play...and that's a gold (Matt Nathanson - Come On Get Higher). The only record in comparing the three that looked a little out of place for KRWM was Wiz Khalifa/Charlie Puth - See You Again.

KRWM is 9% current...9%! out of 94 AC stations reporting to Mediabase, Warm is #78 for percentage of currents. they're 77% GOLD. So stop with the "what's warm doing, their music is changing" crap. you obviously know nothing.

By the way, the majority of Warm's target demo were teenagers or young adults in the 1990's/2000's. So it makes sense that their average song year is 2002.

the only argument that I think can be made about KRWM's playlist is that their library is too small. with 275 unique titles, they are spinning the same records WAY too many times, especially when they are that gold heavy. the beauty of the AC format is that you can spin a LOT of gold. Yes you should only play the songs that test well, but imho it's better to play a song testing 40 out of 50 in your gold category a handful of times rather than playing your #1 testing gold record like it's a current.

Warm seems to be a little broader with their playlist than some AC outlets. While their target demo may still want to hear Cindi Lauper, some of the other songs mentioned in this thread probably can be tossed (music by James Taylor, for instance).

"See You Again" is probably the version without the hip-hop lyrics that's also sometimes played on Hot AC. It's definitely AC at that point.

I've only heard the non-rap version on Warm. KXXO and KPLZ both play the rap version.

It seems like it would be counterproductive for KXXO to play the hip-hop version and I think Hot AC is sending a mixed message by removing it on some songs and leaving it in on others. By the way, now that KXXO has moved much further away from me, I can actually hear it better, even with KWLZ on the air! The radio just needs to be selective enough.

Wow KXXO is playing the rap version? Interesting. I'd be interested in the statistics mentioned about Warm just a few posts ahead of mine for stations like WHUD, WRMM, KMGL, KOSI, and even KKCW. Particularly WRMM is much softer than KRWM, but still leans pretty current. I'm not a big fan of these AC stations like WTRV or KKRB where you can listen for an hour and maybe hear one song from this decade.

I haven't actually hear KKCW air the song but I know it's on their playlist. They play the non-hip-hop version of "Bad Blood". I'd be "slack-jawed" amazed, if they were playing the hip-hop version of "See You Again". Hot AC KRSK plays the non-hip-hop one.

KXXO playing rap? That's an AC no-no, in my opinion. I used to think KXXO was a good soft rock station with a better variety than KRWM, when I lived in Seattle. Now, it looks they are trying to lean toward the "Kiss-FM Lite" format, rather than the "EZ Rock/Lite/Sunny" format.
I'll keep enjoying KKRB for as long as the playlist stays large. There must be 1000 songs or more, dating 1970-present.

I don't find the rap version of "See You Again" to be unsuitable for AC radio. A lot of AC stations play "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry/Juicy J (which is also questionable for the format).

AC radio needs to evolve to be effective. My memory may be incorrect, but I recall KXXO playing a broad mix of "soft" music from the 70's to current a number of years ago. I suppose it's clear that they needed to make some tweaks to get their current format. Even to this day, you do hear some of the "softer" songs that warm won't play (Richard Marx, Keith Harkin, etc).
