Chestnuts Roasting A Week Before Thanksgiving

Folks at Hubbard-Seattle had an important meeting...or surprise, from Santa Claus this early afternoon. First song aired at 12:07PM was Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock."

KRWM flipped to their Christmas music format today. Enjoy the holiday tunes. Too many people were begging for it I suppose. KCMS to probably flip on 11/27. Down in Yakima, no one has flipped yet but KARY is probably going to be the holiday station again this year. KISC Spokane flipped a week or two ago to holiday tunes. CHQM Vancouver has not flipped yet.

I guess I don't understand why you're so bothered about what format a radio station hundreds of miles away from you - clear out of your listening area - flips to.

Maybe - just maybe - with all that's going on in the world right now - we need a little Christmas. Right this very minute.

I'm listening now to see what their playlist is like. The first thing I heard was Frosty the Snowman from Phil Spector's Christmas album IIRC. Unfortunately they had it speeded up so it sounded weird. I don't like when they speed up recordings.

I live in Yakima, but lived in Seattle far longer than here. KRWM used to be a #1 preset for me in the holiday season.
I expected them to flip the afternoon of 11/20 - I suppose due to popular demand, they went one day earlier.

A lot has to do with the timing of PPM. If they started on Thursday, then they get a full undiluted two weeks of the December book with the Christmas kiss. The December book is used for next year buys, while the Holiday book generally is not because of the holiday influence.

Of course, Nielsen's months are not calendar months. December is really Nov 5 to Dec 2.

It's interesting to check out the listener comments on the Warm facebook page.

"Your Christmas music soothes the soul! Thank you for letting it snow, even if it isn't outside!"

"Dear 106.9,
For the past few years you have held the 12th spot on my radio stations. We even listen to you at work in the office. I'm sad to say today you have been deleted from my 12th position and the channel has changed in our office. We are sad to have to do this, but you are playing Christmas music a week before Thanksgiving! We are not ready....
Sincerely,
One Holiday At A Time"

"So excited you started Christmas music!"

Can't win em' all!

Incorrect, that was the second song. First was Mariah's "All I Want For Christmas Is You".

That kind of stuff happens all year round, Christmas just brings out the more vocal opinions.

Thanks for the correction. The playlist didn't list it, oddly enough. It went from "Breathe 2AM" at 11:57a, to "Jingle Bell Rock" at 12:07p.
CHQM flipped to Christmas tunes today.

KCMS flipped today as usual. Wonder if KXXO is doing that all Christmas gimmick again for Black Friday weekend.

My room mate started to hang the out door lights Tuesday and truned them on. Said he needed to do a three day test ahead of time.

Yes they are, had KXXO on last night. The issue I have with that is they don't say anything on the air about it. KAFE at least acknowledges that it's a "holiday shopping weekend." I would assume KAFE started it at midnight.

Maybe they just chose to let the music speak for itself and not clutter it with more meaningless chatter.

I gag a little inside when I hear "we let the music speak for itself" ...no hating on you at all, Rob P.

What was once a nifty feature found on AAA/Rock AC stations 20-25 years ago is now cliche radio-ese for "we don't wanna pay people to produce liners and/or do an air shift"

The one thing I give Mixx 96 is they are live and local a pretty good chunk of the day. Even in the overnights, somebody actually programs the music on the station rather than going to the bird like many small and mid-market full-service AC stations. They also are far more open than iHeart, Entercom, Mother Hubbard, etc. in giving people without big market experience weekend air shifts to get their feet wet...

What I hope the idea was at KXXO was "people know it's 'the holidays' since it's the biggest holiday weekend short of Christmas, we don't need to announce we are doing holiday music".

I notice Hubbard has tightened the Xmas playlist. Both Gloria Estefan and Kenny Loggins' versions of "The Christmas Song" have all been absent, which were common in 2012/13/14. Also haven't seen any Babyface Xmas songs - they did air Winter Wonderland and Sleigh Ride in the past.
KARY 100.9 Yakima flipped Thanksgiving to Xmas.

Very true. That's where I got my start. I can't think of any other radio station that would have allowed someone like me to do half of the things they let me do. I'm extremely thankful for that.
