Seventies on 1660

1660
Are they legit or flying the Jolly Roger?
I cannot find any 411 about them.
Strong all over southern Broward county.
Seventies and eighties music and very good frequency response.

Ahoy, matey! They must be hijacking the airways with a pirate signal as I see that there are no legitimate signals broadcasting on 1660 AM. Closest legit signals are on 1600 & 1700 AM.

Jay,

I saw that, but these days, stations change formats overnight and without notice.
I just can't imagine someone putting an AM pirate station on the air.
At 1660, it would need quite a bit of power into an efficient radiator to cover that much area.

They are local in south Broward.
I will track them down when I have time; it is my hobby,
and AM's are a LOT easier to find than FM's.
I will not reveal where they are when I do because they are causing no interferrence,
but I am willing to teach anyone and everyone all about my methods and techniques.
No special equipment is needed, just a car with a radio.

Using extremely undersized transmitting antennæ, 1660 is a good choice;
The higher up the band, the more efficiently they radiate.
For example, one would NEVER want to put a part fifteen AM station low in the band.

It's also easy to triangulate on an AM signal with a portable AM receiver which has an internal ferrite antenna, a map and a compass.
Good luck.

I have recently become a fan of Grammarly.com, and am following their Facebook posts...LOL
I don't think they were airborne today, but if they are there tomorrow, I might just go fishing for them.

Point taken.

My method is actually to keep reducing the signal getting into my radio as I drive at right angles to where I find them to be strongest, by going to adjacent channels, eventually by disconnecting the antenna, and then eventually listening for distorted images around the band and visually looking for the transmitting antenna. Many TIR stations have been found thusly.

I see this is going to be more difficult than I had thought.
I had some free time today, so I started heading up there.
They are apparently on the air when they feel like it, and they did not feel like it.
I am going to have to listen at the right time(s)
and when it is somewhat convenient for me to waste some time.

I'd start looking around N 64th Ave and Johnson Street. I know an old jock who lives around there. He just might have the guts and desire to run a pirate station, but then there are probably quite a few who would do it.

Johnnie Vomit?
I tracked him down about five or six years ago when he was running an undocumented FM station on, I think it was 91.7. He received a notice from the FCC to "C&D", which he immediately did, and he expressed to me that he is petrified to try it again.

1660 has not been heard again, but I have preset a button on them and check it a couple times each day. I think this person is ITB (In The Biz) because he knows that we are too close to Marco Island for any TIR station to be licensed on 1660, which would shine a big red light on his operation.

Three story concrete building, seventy feet or so, a nice wire hanging down and a real earth ground; closer to the ocean the better. Easy AM pirate on 1660. Thats a 1/8 wave, at 100 watts sounds pro in town.

I have no idea what you are talking about.
I took two hours and tracked it down to a private house today.
Two of the digits in their street address are the same, and that repeated digit is also contained within their street number.
I will say no more, except that they are only on the air for part of the day and only on weekends, and that their playlist is miniscule.

Google Street view fails to show the microwave dish, so I will suppose that it was added later when the street light was removed.

If anyone reading this is involved with the station, you are welcome to send me a PM:
Click on my screen name, then scroll to "private message", and then go for it.

BTW...they sound like they are using an Optimod or equivalent processor.
Nice sound; too bad my car radio sucks.

I was meaning to say (mostly in a reply to Frank) that would be an easy type of location for an AM pirate. I am unfortunately nowhere near Florida's west coast at this time.

I don't care about the exact location of this station what so ever, just how it might be set up. I have questions; like does this house have a seventy foot antenna on top of it? Also, why in the world would it need a microwave dish? Did you see a microwave dish? Would not assume it has any thing to do with the radio station with a miniscule play list and all.

How many miles in one direction could you hear the station? I will assume a non directional antenna. How close is it to the ocean?

I'm curious is this a real pirate? Or just a real well set up part 15?

Don't wanna stop anyone, don't wanna rat anyone out.

Lots of undocumented stations program from other than the transmitter complex,
hence the microwave dish.

Their antenna is a vertical which barely clears their one-story house,
and is mounted atop some Rohn 25 or equivalent .
It consists of about fifteen feet of a coil within a fiberglass sheath and a fifteen foot whip above it.

They sound like a local station out to about five or six miles
and are fairly listenable out to that again.
Soon after that, WCNZ starts QRMing them.
They sound like they are shooting out several hundred watts.
If it were mine, I would zero beat the carrier to WCNZ,
because a fading heterodyne is more objectionable than foreign audio sneaking in.

Well, cool then. Several hundred watts can do that. I still don't understand the dish part, don't most pirate stations play music from a computer? Maybe an online stream. So is this pirate paying for content or what?
