KXXF is on the air

Driving north on W Lake Houston near Will Clayton just a few minutes ago. I tuned to 105.3 to hear American Pie followed by a promo for Walton & Johnson. It seems to be a mix of oldies, classic rock and country. Calling itself 105.3FM Free. I did hear another break, before pulling into my driveway, with W&J talking about how current radio sucks.

I hear KXXF just fine so far in Beaumont.

Top of hour is KXXF - Winnie.

I like the mix of music, although it may not be representative of what will eventually be there. Still shaking down a bad audio hum that is noticeable between songs.

Yep, hum is still there!!....Whatever automation they are running is stepping all over itself...it is really crappy when liners run...

If W&J plan to use this as their base of operation for syndication, they will fall flat in Houston with NO decent signal there...for a while, I thought MAYBE they could be a Good Times Oldies affiliate which launches Monday and are testing on some stations this weekend....but the music mix was all wrong after two songs.....Personally I would prefer to hear Zippo in the Morning.....W&J will only want to bitch and moan and talk more right wing nutjobs ideas....oh just what we need more of...NOT! I want entertainment, not political BS in the morning...and thats what they became more and more of...wish one of the AMs would carry GTO (990 would be nice if the signal was halfway decent and in AM Stereo)....guess I will have to find a station that carries it and streams...would be better than any of the junk on now...

Damn, radio just sucks period now.....

well, they are playing more music...more Texas hill country style than anything with some classic rock thrown in....you can tell the difference between the music sources as the heavy bass on the country/alternative stuff vs the classic rock (which is weak)...I am not impressed and this format will die as quick as it starts....Personally, I think Johnson could have spent $250K for something better....(250k is cheap for a FM license with tower and transmitter already built but...............still)

I don't understand at all what the heck Walton is trying to do here. He buys a lame station that doesn't cover either the Triangle or Houston very well, puts on bad audio with a hum, promotes the W&J show which has yet to air on the station. The only thing I can figure, CW, is that the studios are not ready for this station yet, wherever they are going to be located.

Frankly, my online station sounds better - even on my part 15 transmitter for the neighborhood. And my automation works pretty well, too. No hum.

Upon further review, we drove over to the medical center area of Houston today. No coverage there for 105.3 at all, in fact you have to drive east of the 610 loop before you are even on the fringe for KXXF. The snakes and egrets in the rice fields south of Winnie should be able to hear the station just fine. Beaumont is better, but marginal in many spots. Poor antenna and location, apparently.

The tower is a 500 footer with a 4 bay antenna south of Hwy 73 close to the Boondocks Road intersection (there is another tower closer;IE, north, to 73 that had old 216-220 MHz gear on it for the now gone IWCS, Inland/Intercoastal Waterway Comm System...a cellular like mobile phone system for use only along the inland coastal waterway network but cellular killed it; that tower now supports the Jefferson Co 800MHz trunk system)...it could not be moved further north due to spacing...1/4 to 1/3 of the signal is out over the Gulf: https://maps.google.com/?q=http://t...req=105.3&contour=60&city=WINNIE&state=TX.kml

Updates for KXXF -

Apparently still testing transmitter or studio not yet ready.

Music continues to be all over the map.

Promos are still run for Walton and Johnson, though they have yet to broadcast a live show on the station.

Their website promoted in the promos is not ready for prime time. It is located at freefm.net.

Perhaps Walton should do a deal with Bill Hill and take KSET off his hands as well.

Well, for a couple of days KXXF broadcast nothing but finally back yesterday. The transmitter was on, but nobody was home.

I'm picking up that station very clear here by Jensen and Crosstimbers

Didn't Univision replace everything on the tower after it was wiped out by Ike? That's been less than 10 years ago, would it really need to have the antenna replaced after such a short time?

This isn't the site that was wiped out by Ike. They moved to this one to basically turn it into a Beaumont station.

From what I heard, the site was built with spare parts from around Univision and wasn't too spectacular.

Picking them up here in Humble, whereas before it was non existent, with lots of static and fighting it out with what sounds like an AC station that I couldn't ID

That's Magic in San Antonio. It fights with KTWL over here too. KXXF is indeed stronger, as I've got a pretty weak signal from it here in the 4-4, but at least it's there. Too bad for us, it is pointed straight at Beaumont.

So the one I'm hearing is from San Antonio?
