Joe Knows Videos

KCYB LP Cypress/KZHO LD Houston is playing music videos. Gone are the still shots and/or "103-5 Cypress Radio" or "Joe FM" logos.

Joe's starting to really move up in the world. The videos obviously aren't in HD, but they look about as good as they did when they were first aired in the 80's. It's almost like having Hit Video U.S.A. back, Joe...almost.

Edit to add: why don't you go ahead and run that Alice In Chains video you got cued up there? I see Man In The Box, but I hear Axel F...

Yeah, that's what it looked like. I'm impressed you're doing this much. From the preview I got earlier, it's going to look sharp with videos, liners, and all. Coming together nicely...

I'm not in Houston so I can't see what Channel 38.9 is doing. But you all should see and hear Sam Malone and Chuck Tiller doing their radio show from 7 to 10 am

Uh, nope. David Greenberg Realty??? Auto Shopper??? It's 9:30, so Tiller, Malone, & Pritchard should still be on, yes?

The ads have begun, I see...

Man I really need to get my OTA antenna hooked back up to my TV so I can see/hear all these .x channels you guys are talking about. I don't watch much TV, but do have an older Element HDTV 32" with a great tuner, even has a program guide. I took the OTA antenna down years ago to put up a tower for a ham repeater here at my shop, but now I see there is more going on, and I need to hang a TV antenna off the side of that tower.

The urban stations are struggling.

Huh? The Radio One cluster likely closed 2015 with close to $45 million in revenue. And then iHeart urban station likely did about $13 million.

The country stations are hanging on for dear life.

Each is a top ten biller, and one is a top 5 biller. Together about $40 million.

The Houston market isn't what it was 20 and 30 years ago.

No. Now it has 3.25 times the revenue of 30 years ago. And it is growing and projected to have total billing in excess of $320 million this year. In fact, in what should be a down year for radio, Houston will be slightly up in radio revenue.

Ratings are important, but not as much as the almighty dollar.

In a transactional market, billings come from ratings.

An insider recently told me that the new Hum Tum 106.1 is selling more ads and generating more revenue than one of our major country stations.

Dilusional. Crazy. Insane. Impossible. No F---g way.

Bottom line: In the Houston market, nobody is making any real money except the Spanish and other foreign language programmers.

There is only one Spanish language station in the top 10 billers.

Your vision of the market is just totally upside down.

Joe, I noticed the picture quality has improved drastically and the music selection seems to have widened. There's even an ad from a business located in my office building (Zero's downtown).

One question--is there anything preventing you from sending a 16:9 SD feed?

Damn tequila shots, and here I thought I had outgrown drunk dialing!

Lol, no Joe, not one of mine. I can help the guy looking for a girlfriend, though. Of course, he'd have to travel back and forth to San Antonio, unless he's willing to move her here...but she's available, and like Freddie Mercury, trying to find somebody to love...

...and I'm not interested, lol.

I still can not get 38

KZHO can be very tricky to receive if you are outside the Loop. I have to do a lot of fiddling with my antenna to get a lock on (virtual) Channel 38 at my Cy-Fair location.

I too have noticed the video improvement on 38.9 but haven't spent much time watching.

If you attempt to manually tune it in, remember ... the station transmits on channel 39. The virtual channel is 38. Try manually tuning to 39.1 and see if you receive anything.

Houston is so geographically huge that LPTVs have a hard time covering more than part of the market. KUVM-LD and KUVM-CD are very hard for me to get a lock on, and I've never had any luck getting KDHU-LD or KBPX-LD. KCVH-LD can be hit or miss as well.

I'm just using an amplified indoor antenna for my one OTA set (my "main" sets are on cable.) Those with a rotatable roof or attic yagi antenna will probably have better luck.

I am about a mile from you. I use a cheap Chinese rabbit ear set that cost $1.25 down at King Dollar. Works much better if I don't extend the antennas all the way. Just about a foot of length brings 38 in with no problem.

Only way I will get this channel if I get a a outdoor antenna 15ft to 18ft hight. I have tried every I have tested with 2 different antenna is different locations still nothing. 38 just might be the weakest tv station in town.

Is 4 even on the air right now??

The most powerfull junk channels for me are 10 15 21 43 maybe try to get a sub channel with one of them.

I would love to do something like for with Rap Hiphop R&B music or Action movies

Everyone of these are horrible signals north of DT, DJ. I've never picked up 10 or 34 in my life, and that's with an outdoor antenna and not rabbit ears. 15 has its moments where it'll hold a weak signal that I can keep a lock on with the converter, 21 is hit or miss, 30 comes in all right, 43 is too weak, and if it's windy outside, it's pixelating constantly. 38 is a comparatively good signal, holding above 50% regularly.

Agree. I'm using a 4-bay UHF antenna mounted in the attic of my 3 story place (it's about 50 feet off the ground but the roof destroys the signal strength) near N. Shepherd and Crosstimbers/43rd. I get 38 solidly, with about 85% signal strength (Dish ViP 222 receiver). I have also never received 10, 21, or 43. 15 can be received, but the programming doesn't appeal to me so it received the delete button.

Wouldn't VHF-Lo 4 provide miserable coverage?

I am curious at to what you are using for video playout. I've been on the hunt for one to feed my little blunder tongue.

What software are you using for the slides and song title displays? I have many junker clunker and some new PCs to fiddle with. Good to see a cheapo laptop can handle what you are doing. (and for the most part what I plan to do)
