Elizabeth Espinosa

First let me say that there's not much other than infomercials on the air on Sunday mornings, so kudos to KFI for the Sunday Morning program originally hosted by Shannon Ferron.

But I have to ask, is it just me or does anyone else find Elizabeth Espinosa really difficult to listen to? She has a very pleasant voice but what a motormouth! Her speech pattern is like bursts of rapid fire. I never heard the weekday show Espinosa co-hosted so I don't know if she was slowed down a bit by Mark Thompson, but on her own she sounds so wound up I've given up trying to listen.

There are many aspects of content and style that contribute to the appeal of a talk show and certainly pace is an important one of them. Does KFI have an active Program Director? If so, perhaps that person could offer some friendly advice such as, "Slow down ..... Relax! You have two hours to make your points, no need to rush through it."

Just one man's opinion.

For the record, KFI's "Sunday Morning Program" was originally hosted by Gary Hoffman and was inserted between the Jesus Christ show and Leo LePorte's tech program. Shannon took it over. Due to the present early hour I've not personally heard Elizabeth Espinosa's program and won't comment on it. She does have an impressive international newswoman background and is an emmy-award winner with credentials broadcasting in espanol as well as English. I felt her background was under-utilized when linked with Mark.

KFI does indeed have a "hands on" program director - name is Robin Bertolucci. Here is an article about her:

Is that the same "hands on PD" who handled the Bill Handel on air meltdown, the John Ziegler v. John & Ken public feud, or the John & Ken Whitney Houston "Ho" slur incident? How do you define hands on?

In the case of the PD of a locally programmed talk station, part of the job is damage control.

Robin is one of the best PDs in talk radio.

Elizabeth is a motormouth on the public affairs program, SoCal Insider, she co-hosts with Rich Reiff on KOCE-50.
It's just in the nature of her delivery, me thinks.

Preventing "damage" is a good skill too.

David was obviously implying that with a locally programmed talk station, a certain amount of damage is inevitable.

You gotta stop looking for targets to put down, TPD. It ain't working.

However, putting the talent on too tight a leash quashes creativity.

When I was programming talk in LA, if I did not get at least a few irate listener calls a day, something was wrong. Calming down angry members of the LA City Council or self-proclaimed defenders of public morals and "interests" was part of the job.

Since when is offering constructive criticism offensive? Have I said anything that is false? If I did I am sure the moderator would have reeled me in. Sometimes the truth hurts, but nevertheless it must be said be said

I listen to one of Ms. Espinosa's podcast, and yes she does speak with a rather fast cadence, but I wasn't distracted by it. I think her Spanish accent is cute.

Criticism is form of opinion, not necessarily synonymous with truth, but this is a country where everyone is entitled to reasonable expression of their opinions. If everyone will simply honor that right in regards to others the entire community benefits. I don't find either TPR's or KR's opinions offensive (its their right) and appreciate David's wry humor in response. Robin can and will handle Elizabeth (and her other on-air hosts) as she wishes regardless of what any of us here say; her track record speaks for itself. There is nothing here IMHO worthy of moderator attention. Let's move on.

Given the milquetoast programming that KFI is offering these days, I am quite sure Robin is spending very little time handling irate listeners and politicians. That was the whole point of transitioning to the "Less Stimulating Talk Radio" format they adopted under her watch.

Actually, tighter control came as a result of the Rush Limbaugh incident, over which she had no control. The result was a much more vocal opposition to controversial subjects and militant enforcement of political correctness by a loud segment of the population.

If a broadcaster says obscene and offensive things (yes I know it is subjective) what is wrong with the listeners organizing a boycott of the broadcasters sponsors? It seems like a good and fair way for the listeners to influence the content of the broadcast.
