April ratings

Man, this board is quiet...

April numbers: http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb039

Movin's still on top, but The Jet makes some good gains.
KMPS leads the Country battle.
KIRO-FM top talker, followed by KUOW.

Discuss.

Hmmmm....Wow. Steep drop for KUBE (hard to see them on 104.9. Or lower than KIXI in these things.)

KVRQ's debut indicates some small nibbling at KISW (they're really going to have to get serious about the headbanger thrash metal content if they intend to inflict serious damage. Because that's how the rockers roll in Seattle.)

I thought we weren't supposed to discuss 6+ ratings.

It's fine to discuss them... its just that the business of radio does not depend on that particular table of numbers. But we all love lists...

Thanks for clarifying David, but I was just trying to make a little joke since Rob doesn't often like to talk about the 6+ numbers and I was surprised to see that he started a thread about the latest data ;)

I'm not sure you'll see anything higher than a 1.0 on 104.9, no matter what it's running.

I wouldn't count out 104.9 entirely. Radio Locator shows that the 104.9 signal is pretty useless, but it actually does cover pretty well. I happened to be driving near Everett a few weeks ago, and was able to hear KUBE coming in with a listenable. If you happen to live south of Seattle in the area in which they are trying to market), you shouldn't have much of a problem picking it up.

You're right, but I'm not sure how many people would put up with the static. I can hear it here in Edmonds. In fact, when it was Gen X, I used to tag songs off of it all the time, as for some reason, only the then Clear Channel stations except Kiss worked. CBS also works, but I didn't have as good of luck with them. That being said, I had to be in a certain spot in the house for the signal to be strong enough.

The number one reason people listen to a particular station is signal. Everything else follows.

Very true about signal strength. I've never driven around any of the northern suburbs with 104.9 on the car radio, but if you happen to get into your car in Tacoma and drive north, you could easily be near Everett by the time you decided to switch.

Clear Channel wants to target the south sound with KUBE, and that 104.9 signal does a decent job of that.

I know it's pretty lame so allow me to help... KIRO both sticks looking good - Movin still does what Movin does...Brandon built a monster but will he take it apart now that he's working across the street? Why does KOMO suck so much? KPLU / KUOW = BORING. Hubbard's attempt at a rock station is actually helping others in the market by taking away from KISW, KZOK, and JACK. Does CBS even still have a presence here...OMG! Can iHeart figure out how to turn around their two hit music stations? Meanwhile their classic hits is killing it. The Jet just kicked in the afterburners and they pretty much OWN at work listening. Bob Pittman has to like that! And did I see that The Wolf is howling behind KMPS now..wait that COULDN'T be right...could it?

I started a thread about Power just before this one went up. I'm not sure what's up with them, but if this keeps up I'm sure we'll be seeing another format on 93.3 within 2 years, which is a real shame. Power is actually a good station.

KUBE circa '82 'til '90 was a great station. What came after that was a complete surprise and in my book a disaster.

Why does KOMO suck? Simple, they're not keeping up with the times. Their main signal is on Ancient Modulation, and their FM simulcast is a no show north of Seattle. KOMO needs a relevant FM presence that covers the full metro, just like KIRO-FM, but I don't see Sinclair buying another signal or blowing up KPLZ.

Actually, the KUBE transition to hip-hop began in November of 1991. I was listening one night and and it seemed like it had gone all rap and a few nights earlier, it had been mainstream CHR. I stopped listening to KUBE then and started listening to them again during their 1994-95 "New Music Revolution" Alternative phase. Interesting concept, Alternative done CHR-style. It blew my mind hearing Sonic Youth, The Jesus And Mary Chain and The Meat Puppets, not on KCMU, but on KUBE, of ALL stations.

When the rap returned, I left 93.3 MHz again.

It also is a surprise to me that Sinclair is willing to rent that 97.7 signal on South Mountain for all this time. It seems like at some point they will eventually want to vacate that frequency for something better.

Fisher signed the original contract, and more than likely, it's for a specified period of time. When the contact expires, we'll probably see some changes.

I honestly don't see how KOMO-FM really helps their bottom line. It is just about as good as an AM having an FM translator, albeit a high power class C translator with a good power bill.

Here's an idea...if KUOW and the UW actually buy KPLU, they could move KUOW to 88.5 and sell 94.9 to Sinclair for KOMO-FM. (OK, that was all meant to be a funny, but I'm sure AQH will still find a reason to shoot me down!)

KOMO-AM has a not so great (technical term) signal to the South Sound and south of Kent because of their location on North Vashon Island during the day. The addition of the FM on the South West mountain sort of fixes that.

Sinclair is the largest TV group in the US. Seattle is the only radio properties in their group, so I doubt they are very eager to spend money on increasing radio holdings, especially in Seattle/Tacoma. Apologies to AQH.

And if it weren't for KPLZ raking in the dough, KOMO News Radio would have been put to sleep right after Sinclair took over.

Either way, it will be interesting when that 94.9 signal eventually is sold. Rare opportunity for whoever gets their hands on it.
