my prediction for whats coming in bham

Ok, so i can't deny, I have enjoyed a few tracks on "99.5 the South" - I mean, I about fell out of my driver's seat in my car when I heard "Ain't Life Grand" from Widespread Panic come on a 100,000 watt station. That being said, I'm very fearful although clearly several people on social media like it, the playlist can't be more than 100 songs or so, which means it is probably stunting until Memorial Day.

That being said - here are a few facts I have come across over the last few days. Apparently "Leland and AJ" who actually put Crawford's 101.1 'on the map' have left 101.1. So has former reporter Andrea Lindenburg. Rumor has it Matt Murphy has "been on vacation" and I saw another post stating his show will no longer be carried in Montgomery (and I think it was on in Huntsville too? - wouldn't know, never listened)

So that's three local jocks / talk radio folks who have left their respective local slots in the last few weeks.

Are we getting a new 100,000 watt talker in Birmingham the day after Memorial Day?

Could be all-talk WAPI-FM coming to 99.5. As much as I detest talk radio, I've thought for a while now that it would be a good idea for Cumulus to try WAPI-AM's talk format on 99.5 to better compete against WERC. It would definitely be an improvement over the signal coverage when WAPI was on 100.5. That's a good point about Memorial Day. i thought that was odd that WZRR would change formats just before the holiday.

I'm thinking along this line as well. I've been hearing about Murphy's meetings and missing his show, so… something may be afoot. Who knows.

I don't live in the area anymore but I remember liking WAPI's talk lineup more than WERC since it was local most of the day. That gave it an edge. And also Richard Dixon was a hoot to listen to, especially in his early days before he tried to be a more typical political show.

WAPI worked alright on 100.5, it was the signal in Birmingham that held it back (and lack of promotion and general Cumulus cluelessness, etc.) Being on 99.5 would certainly fix the signal issue, but would Cumulus give it the time of day, or will they do what they did to WCOA in Pensacola, and not give a chance or promote it properly?

Someone just posted a promotional pic for "Leland Live" on Facebook, supposedly for a station called "Talk 99.5" at talk995.com. Not sure if it is legitimate or not, but I just checked the domain talk995.com and it appears Cumulus did register it on 4/16, since the DNS servers all point to cumulus.com.

Something is definitely going on at 'API.

This morning (Monday May 23rd) Murphy was not
on,no reason/comment given,just stale reruns.
Exact same thing just happened for Dixon.

Hope it works out for both but have a feeling of
dread and foreboding about this.

Guess Cumulus needs still more sportstalk.

I thought they had to sacrifice 100.5 running ESPN full-time to get Finebaum on 94.5.

Could be — I don't remember the details of all the Finebaum stuff.

So, knowing how Cumulus treated FM talk in Pensacola (and Atlanta, and…) do we want to take bets on how long until it's kicked off FM and relegated to 1070 only again?

It's true, my cynicism knows no bounds.

Edit to add: It's right at 4 am, and the stream is now carrying WAPI. And I mean that literally, it's just a direct off the air feed of WAPI, complete with the typical high pitched whine of adjacent channels whistling in the background. Very interesting. I wonder if it's going out on the FM this way, too?

Murphy and Lindenburg now on 99.5 and 1070...99.5 has a good signal here.
Sounds like old times (at least for now).
No whine heard on 99.5.
