Which Phoenix AM For Sale?

Tucson-based media broker Kalil & Co. (yes, it is headed by former KTKT PM driver from the '60s, Frank Kalil) has an ad in today's (Mon 06/06) Tom Taylor Newsletter...

For Sale
Phoenix AM
contact Kalil & Co. Inc.

So let the speculation begin! Which AMer is on the block? Does Kalil handle rimshots, or is it indeed a real metro Phoenix AM?

From the home office in Buckeye, the Top Ten list of AM stations which may be up for sale:

KBMB Black Canyon City - definitely a rimshot
KMVP Phoenix - TMISU had it sold once, but the deal tanked and they really don't need 8~Sixty
KFNX Cave Creek - hair on fire, what can we say?
KCKY Coolidge - another rimshot
KOY Phoenix - what purpose does this serve for I ♥ Debt?
KBSZ Apache Junction - what a joke!
KIKO Apache Junction - see above
KSUN Phoenix - nice chunk of real estate
KPHX Phoenix - wheel of formats station
KASA Phoenix - so doubtful because co-owned 11~Fifty doesn't cover Phoenix

Our vote goes to KMVP followed by KPHX.

KBMB not likely to go until at least the end of the next World Cup. There are dozens and dozens of pre-Cup games, and thousands of hours of cup talk programs that all sell very well.

I saw José Molina of KPHX a year ago, and he seemed happy with the (small) amount of money the station produced.

So my vote is for KMVP.

From the dark side of the Buckeye Media Hut, we've heard a $3.3m price for a stand alone Phoenix ancient modulation station. Could that be Landfill 8~Sixty?? ...and to think, that mountain of methane gas site is on Lower BUCKEYE Road. YIKES!

Of all the stations in your top 10, I wouldn't blink if I read about 860 selling for that. 1230 and its giant set of lips pattern also could fit the bill.

But man, there are a lot of bad AM stations with bad signals in the Valley with no hope of things ever getting better. You can't fix AM. You just can't.

Perhaps Frank is thinking about holding the Kalil & Co. Christmas pageant at the next door Lucky Wishbone.

We think I ♥ Debt is a little gun shy of selling anything right now in light of lender squawk on their sale of the outdoor division. 8~Sixty is excess baggage to TMISU.

In spite of crappy coverage and dwindling audiences under the age of 70, buyers still line up to purchase Ancient Modulation stations. You can't fix stupid, either :))

If 8~Sixty is sold (which we think makes a lot of sense for TMISU), then that frees up the KMVP calls for Sports Parkinglot 6~Twenty. Then 92~Three can lose the FM after their call letters, but will probably continue to use them. KOOL is a classic example of a station that doesn't need to hang FM on to the call letters, but does.

I kind of assume every FM has an -FM suffix, but that's because I'm so used to Mexico these days and everything has a suffix...

FM's with no AM counterpart (co-owned or calls shared) can just be WXXX or KXXX. Some FMs that were part of AM/FM combos where the AM later changed calls may still have the -FM at the end of the calls. A simple FCC filing can have the -FM removed if there is no corresponding AM.

Muchos años pasados, TMISU owned a combo in Dallas with the call letters KAAM and KAFM. The latter they called KAFM-FM, not just at the TOH, but all the time. However they didn't use KAAM-AM. In San Diego, KFMB-FM is called KFM-BFM on the air. But with KOOL-FM, the legal calls are KOOL. There aint no KOOL-AM anywhere, anymore. Just about everyone calls the station "cool FM", so why not call it what the listeners call it? Makes sense to me and Nurse Jeff-FM.

Sorry, Doc. 94.5 is still KOOL-FM. Nobody from Chancellor to AMFM to Infinity bothered to change the calls. But in the last 20 years or so, the positioning went from "KOOL FM" to "KOOL 94.5", then back to "KOOL FM".

Unless you are talking about their seventies digisub, KOOL ain't KOOL no more. (Cool DJ's all gone, crap songs, too many commercials.)

You're correct on that one. I'll have Nurse Jeff update the TRS-80 database as soon as the back ordered parts arrive from Tandy.

A genuine Trash-80? Akubar still seems to have a number of brain cells working despite driving around town in that emission-breaking '76 Gremlin (Levi Edition).

Make Radio Shack great again!
