Unique OTA situations

Yakima/Tri-Cities:
It's practically a UHF island. KNDO-23, KIMA-29, KAPP-35, KCYU-LD 41, KYVE-47. 2 1/2 of the Big 3 stations share news from a Tri-Cities studio. KAPP actually comes from KVEW-42, KNDO actually comes from KNDU-25, and KIMA-29 (mornings/weekends only) comes from KEPR-19. It's a sad situation in general. KAPP has one reporter. KNDO has one reporter. KIMA has about 4 reporters, one anchor and a sports director. No local meteorologist...Mike McCabe, who does wx on KIMA, is prerecorded from KEPR-19, because he's doing live WX at the same time for KEPR's Action News broadcast.
15-20 years ago, everything here was local. KNDO and KAPP had dueling studios at S 24th Ave. Those are gone. KNDO/KAPP would actually feed some of their newscasts to KNDU/KVEW...but it's the exact opposite now.
KIMA is also one of the last stations owned by Sinclair that is not using their current news graphics package. KIMA is using late 2000's era Fisher graphics. The studio is old and tired. Small desk with a bare blue wall and two HDTVs displaying the "KIMA Action News" logo. KNDU upgraded to a nicer set, with an NBC peacock behind the anchors. KAPP/KVEW also upgraded a bit with a nighttime view of the Tri-Cities behind the anchor (Mike Gonzalez). But they use the worst opening announcer ever - David Lee, known for his deep voice used for Westwood One NFL broadcasts and at countless rock stations around the country. Yes, that guy introduces news on a small ABC station in eastern Washington...

As for other notes, we have no My Network TV affiliate in this market. Our PBS station is a satellite of KCTS now. KYVE has no local Yakima programming anymore.
Satellite is mixed with affiliates. Dish Network gets KVEW ABC and KNDU NBC. No KNDO/KAPP. They also get KIMA AND KEPR for CBS. Fox comes from KCYU...not KFFX-11 Tri-Cities. Dish also provides both PBS stations in the market (KYVE-47, and KTNW-31 Tri-Cities).
DirecTV provides KNDO for NBC. I think they get KFFX for Fox, but I can't remember off the top of my head right now.

Is Tri-Cities larger than Yakima?

Is Tri-Cities larger than Yakima?

Yakima is DMA 123, and includes the Tri-Cities. They are not considered separate TV markets.

But they're separate metropolitan areas. That's what he meant by one being larger.

However, TV does not measure by MSA but by DMA.

Radio does not strictly use the OMB's Metropolitan Statistical Areas. Instead, they use the Nielsen defined Metro Survey Areas which generally, but not always, are different from the government MSAs. Yakima is #198 and the Tri Cities is #181.

Good riddance to the useless Hampton Roads translators!! Looks like some of them may be sold during the spectrum auction!!! At least they are CA and LD stations, so they qualify, but not translators like W(2 random numbers)(2 random letters). The link is here on another post in this site. http://www.radiodiscussions.com/showthread.php?695500-The-Tidewater-Hampton-Roads-has-too-many-pointless-translators&p=6106178#post6106178

Just the Class A stations are auction eligible, LDs are not.

In a couple previous posts we mentioned Canadian border cities getting US Nets OTA....how about this unique area

Bellingham, WA
They are right on the border and get most of their OTA channels from Canada. They have 3 US local stations
KVOS 12 Me -1 Movies -2
KBCB 24 Sonlife -1 Jewelry -2
PBS translator 28 with PBS -1, NHK World -2, MHZ -3, TVW -4

Their network programming on cable is from Seattle (too far to get OTA) but OTA would be from Vancouver

Was Bellingham considered the fringe of the Seattle/Tacoma DMA? I also remember that KVOS-TV was once a CBS affiliate.

By the way, Tri-Cities WAS a UHF island as well...until 1999. I forgot to mention the stations and channels: KFFX-11, KEPR-19, KNDU-25, KTNW-31, and KVEW-42. Fox had been on a small LPTV (KBWU-LP) on 66 which was // KAYU-28, thus cable providers didn't need to pipe in Foxnet. Same in Yakima with K53CY/K68EB/KCYU-LP. Yakima is still a UHF island in terms.
Ch 19 has about five reporters; ch 25 has about four reporters; and 42 has a couple at the most. KNDO-23 Yakima only has the one reporter, and same with KAPP-35. But the two are simulcasting each other's news nowadays.

Anywho...back to Unique OTA situations

If you live in say Sidney, Fairview or Plentywood Montana and are OTA only. It gives you 2 NBC & 2 CBS affiliates.(unless you have an indoor antenna...outdoor antennas will easily get WIlliston)
Due to the programming schedule and time zone change you have 2 options of watching shows

CBS on both is 6-9 (KXMD runs 7-10 Central and KXGN is 6-9 Mountain). But at 9:00 KXMD goes to news while KXGN runs an hour of "Millionaire" to get back "in sequence". So Colbert is on at 9:35 on KXMD and 10:35 on KXGN

KUMV NBC Williston runs NBC from 7-10 Central (so 6-9 Mountain). KXGN-DT2 runs NBC from 7-10 Mountain. So again you can watch Fallon on KUMV at 9:35 or on KXGN-DT2 at 10:35

(this also is the same for folks who on cable have both which some areas do. In Glendive proper they have both KXGN-DT2 and KUMV but since this topic is over the air the above is more emphasized) :)

WWCP (FOX 8) in Johnstown, PA (Altoona-Johnstown DMA) has their tower in eastern Westmoreland County (Pittsburgh DMA).

WNEP (ABC for Scranton-Wilkes-Barre) has a translator in the Lehigh Valley (Philadelphia DMA).

Northeastern Connecticut (Putnam, Killingly, etc.) can probably get four affiliates of most networks (Boston, Hartford, Providence, Springfield) over the air. In fact, from Putnam, most Providence, Boston, and Springfield stations are closer than Hartford stations, but the only station from any of those that's seen on cable there is WGBH.

Montecello, Blanding and Bluff Utah all have translators which serve their areas.
Those translators rebroadcast all the major Salt Lake City stations.
MOAB, Utah which is larger than all of them combined has no OTA available at all.
Once you get 25-35 miles North and East of MOAB, some Grand Junction Colorado
stations can be received OTA.

Another related thread:

Virtually all the OTA full power stations licensed to the Buffalo, NY area are
viewed by far more people outside the market than within the market. This
would include OTA reception in cities like Hamilton, Toronto and Oshawa
Ontario Canada. When you add in all the cable companies and satellite
providers, the ratio becomes over 10:1 viewing outside the Buffalo, NY area.

probably say the same for Burlington, VT (Montreal)

Maybe but then again I seem to recall reading awhile back somewhere ( may had been this website ) that Quebec viewers including those in Montreal tend to watch French speaking programming than to do with likewise with English. If that is indeed true I doubt the Burlington market stations would get very much in the way of viewers from Quebec. On the other hand I can see the Buffalo stations getting a chunk of viewers from Canada. Is there really much of a difference programming wise outside of news between say CTV or Global than it is with CBS or FOX ??
