WNRP 1620 / W293BA-FM 106.5 Pensacola

We had an active discussion in progress on another site tht has "stepped out for a bit" concerning the new 106.5 translator licensed to WNRP in downtown Pensacola.

Since that thread went inactive:

ADX took a lightning strike last Thursday,
106.5's testing went off the air last Thursday
I haven't heard anything except WAVH on 106.5 from downtown Pensacola since last Thursday.

The thunderstorm put 1620 off the air for less than an hour (as I recall). 106.5 was on the air last Thursday morning and has been off the air since 1620 took that lightning strike. I only assume they are related.

That FL/AL line is pretty good at stopping radio signals from crossing.

Before WNRP signed on, 1620 was the noisiest frequency in Pensacola on the x-band. I haven't ever picked up WTMI even...

Edit to add -
It seems odd to me that every translator in the Pensacola market is locally owned. It is nice that they are all locally programmed, but it is also sad that the only way a local broadcaster can afford to get on FM is with a measly 250 watts of unprotected coverage.

I don't see a WDWR thread here. I guess it all went away with Radio-Talk.

Recall that construction of the new 350 ft tower was stopped for permits. Now that they've fixed that and built the tower it appears WDWR is in violation of their land lease for allowing commercial broadcasters to use the newly constructed tower on land leased from the city.

This could cause the new Pensacola translators to want to locate on the shorter WNRP tower on private property next door.

As I recall WNRP's original app to move to Pensacola intended to use their own tower. Much shorter but up on a nearby hill. When WDWR added 150 feet to their (already taller) tower, 106.5 and 97.1 applied to move to the new tower.

What I don't get is the 350 foot tower for catholic radio WDWR was just a replacement for the 1230 tower that opperated commercially on the same tract of city owned land for over 50 years.
It appears the city negotiated the new land lease assuming they were dealing with a non-profit group that then leased out extra tower space to Hale and ADX. Now they want to renegotiate. Oh, and some people without enough to do are upset they have a new (taller) tower visible from their houses.
Politics.

What I don't get is whether it matters whether they're a non-profit or not. I don't know anything about this sort of stuff so it seems odd that they city could legally say "we'll lease it to you but only if you don't lease space out to others for profit"...

I kind of get the impression that there are some people in the surrounding neighborhoods who'd like the tower to just be completely taken down and to heck with the Catholics and radio in Pensacola.

More problems for WNRP?
The brand spanking new 106.5 translator has been off the air since they took that lightning strike n July. Now they post this on the Facebook before tonight's FSU game.

"Dang, sometimes you just experience that technical difficulty stuff. You may notice a staticy connection on your radio, so make it it seamless by listening to us online or on the WNRP app in the iTunes store or the TuneIn radio app on your Android."

I thought the signal was bad for the last month or so. If this is new, I don't think I've listened in the last few days.

Lightning is a pain, and you can expect to get zapped. We got hit, put a hole in the transmission line, and finished off the tube. We just repaired the line, and new tube going in this week. You never know.

Didn't Wilkins buy 95.3 for WNVY? I thought they were going to sell 92.3 or pair it with WVTJ. Both had CPs from the tall tower which made them placeholders on two of the best frequencies left in Pensacola.
Somehow Hale was involved with 92.3.

Yeah, it looks like they bought it after getting 92.3. Both translator permits are for directional signals facing east, but the 92.3 one would have been east of US-27, putting the bulk of the coverage over cows and trees. 95.3 will be from the WYCT tower, I believe.

Not sure why they decided to abandon the 92.3 translator project. Spacing issues with WZEW, perhaps? Either one of them in their current CP state don't seem to cover much of Pensacola.

They're moving 92.3 to the WDWR tower with all the other translators. I'm curious what ADX will do with 106.5? Leave it in Milton simulcasting WNRP? Launch a new format with HD on WYCT? Sell it to move out of town since 106.5 is a bad frequency?

Low power signals from those tall towers would be useless in Pensacola. Great places to park CPs though.

Hey Zach, have you looked at the FCC app for W222BR 92.3? It's confusing and it doesn't show up on fccinfo or radio-locator. The app specifies the WDWR tower. At one spot it specifies an antenna tuned for 97.7. Am I just way off or missing something obvious?

WPNN 790/103.7 is getting much better. WNRP needs FM to keep up.

Another future topic: Why haven't other central time zone AMs picked up FM translators: WEBY, WTKE, WCOA, WJSB, WDSP, WZEP, Chipley, Mariana, Blountstown..
