The Programming Disputes Thread

OK, so anyone knows what happened to the Calkins stations during the dispute? What could've happened to the Calkins stations (WWSB/WTXL/WWAY), if Raycom stations got blacked out on Dish? Will the Calkins trio get blacked out too after they become Raycom stations, like a here today, gone tomorrow on Dish situation after the Raycom/Calkins deal is done?

Yes if you are wondering why you cannot see certain TV channels on the defunct Aereo and Filmon apps its because of copyright issues and contract disputes are taken to court.

At one time I watched the Chicago-area version of WGN via FilmOn. This was two years ago or so. I know the big four from Chicago also were available, and I'm pretty sure New York, Dallas and Los Angeles affiliates also were available. Was a nice treat. Not sure I can ever see that happening again.

But Wait Newson apps as of 2016 carries the contract rights to air Disney O&O's, Media General, Hearst, Raycom, Meredith, Tenga, Hubbard Local Newscasts for now. Newson is permitted to air newscasts from these people. Note ABC O&O's do not air their local ads and sports segements on NewsOn due to contract issues over what airs on apps. Sports Segments are property of ESPN app and League pass app this maybe one factor why ABC and Others cannot air highlights from the olympics and MLB.

Ads may be geoblocked and overwritten with Local Station promos and Newson promos for the app edition its subjected to contract issues too.

DirecTV, Sunbeam end Miami blackout but Boston retrans impasse goes on

DirecTV and Sunbeam Television have ended a stalemate in Miami/Fort Lauderdale that has kept the local Fox affiliate blacked out on the satellite service since mid-July, but the two companies remain at odds on retrans renewals deals for NBC and CW stations in Boston.

DirecTV and Sunbeam didn’t disclose terms of the deal for Fox affiliate WSVN-TV.

The Florida deal came as U.S. Sen. Edward J. Markey (D-Massachusetts) called on the satellite operator and the station owner to end the impasse over Boston station WHDH-TV, which is keeping Boston-area DirecTV subscribers from seeing the Summer Olympic Games. CW station WLVI-TV is also blacked out on DirecTV.

Sunbeam has also threatened Dish Network with a blackout amid a similar broadcast retransmission licensing impasse.

on the subject of the still ongoing Dish-Tribune dispute, the reason why it happened in the first place is because they own WGN America and the channel's value has decreased a lot since dumping all the Chicago content that stayed after WGN went from combined Superstation on both OTA and cable/satellite to spun off to just a OTA WB/CW/Indy station and a separated cable channel.

not to mention, as soon as September rolls around, Tribune will get really desperate as September is the start of the Fall TV season and the NFL regular season and Tribune owned NBC, Fox and CBS affiliates are gonna be hurting real bad with less eyeballs on their airing of their respected network's coverage of the NFL, especially with the national Thursday Night Football games being split up between NBC and CBS this year for airing on OTA broadcasting TV while also on the NFL network as well. and not to mention Sunday Night Football on NBC entering it's eleventh season next month.

so i predict the Tribune/Dish dispute gets resolved either later this month or within the first half of next month.

The financial outlook for Local TV This may be why Dish and others are using TV station groups as bargaining chips in their contract disputes.

The level of television station transactions increased between 2013 and early 2014, due to the success of larger groups’ retransmission consent negotiations and the upcoming reverse auction to be held by the FCC. While M&A activity declined in late 2014 and into early 2015, recent combinations late last year and early this year of several television groups have led to increased concentration on the national level.

Among the many findings of the report are:

Local TV ranks second in terms of U.S. local advertising revenue share at $21.9 billion. Direct mail is No. 1 at $36.9 billion, newspapers is third at $17.4 billion, closely followed by online at $17.3 billion and radio at $15.4 billion.
Local news is key programming for stations, drawing national and local advertisers via audiences with higher education and income levels.
Over-the-air advertising revenues will grow 12.1% in 2016 due to political advertising.
Online/interactive ad revenue is growing steadily — it will account for 6.4% of total revenue by 2020.
Local TV stations get nearly 35% of the $16.7 billion in total advertising spent by the automotive sector.
Local TV stations will receive more than $543 billion in restaurant advertising in 2016.
Between 2016 and 2020, local TV will receive a growing share of mobile advertising, up to 14.9%.
By 2020, local TV stations’ advertising revenues will remain the largest portion (63.6%) of the local video ad marketplace.
Retransmission consent revenues are expected to grow at a 17.3% compound annual growth rate through 2020.

No progress with the Tribune-Dish Network Dispute. The update on the websites mention you will be missing FOX College Football, FOX NFL Football, the new FOX Fall Season, and the new CW Fall Season.

WHO the Iowa NBC affiliate owned by Tribune is also saying similar things about Dish and how their viewers cannot see the olympics. Well if people can find their way to bypass cable disputes by either buying Roku, Apple TV, Tablets and Phones via app distribution and the viewers pay for that via internet fees. Who does contract disputes affect the most though besides Dish and other cable TV providers. Well you have Xfinity the cable and internet provider division of NBC put more emphasis on buying their internet service in certain DMA's like San Francisco. AT&T also do similar things like put emphasis on Phone service and internet services than DirecTV. Also you have TV stations in some parts of the country put emphasis on apps over TV such as Hearst and ABC Owned stations putting emphasis on their ads to watch their newscasts on Newson, CBS does the same by aggressively emphasizing certain brands like CBSN and Cnet as app only venues. What do you think Dish should do to avoid escalating contract disputes? That's my main point.

From Radiopatrol, "What do you think Dish should do to avoid escalating contract disputes? That's my main point."
I install antennas in my area, more of a hobby than a business. From Directv subscribers I
frequently hear how incredibly expensive subscription television has become. From Cable One subscribers
I frequently hear about poor service, channels missing like Me-TV, Decades, H&I, etc and service
interruptions. I rarely hear about any of that from Dish subscribers. Instead I hear about contract
disputes and people missing their favorite channels for days, weeks or even months. Dish could and
should do a better job of letting subscribers know they can usually access a disputed broadcast channel
with an antenna. That should occur as soon as it becomes likely that there could be a blackout. With
cable offerings, Dish should offer some alternatives or even upgraded channel(s) as a way to placate subscribers.
They seem to be doing that more and more. Personally, I think Dish is on the right track
when it comes to contract disputes...... Someone has to draw a line in the sand..... It looks like Dish is that someone.

But can they? You would know the answer, of course. I suppose it depends on where you are located. I've heard there are people who, because of the terrain and/or distance, couldn't pick up a certain station with an antenna under any circumstances, unless maybe they wanted to go up really high. I guess if they paid you enough you could, but you'd also have to buy the stricture in that case.

The Tribune/Dish dispute, unsurprisingly is now the longest TV dispute, EVER, surpassing the CBS & CW O&O/TWC/BHN dispute that took out WTOG-TV in Tampa among other stations, like WCBS-TV in NYC! Wow, Dish, and you almost "secretly" threatened to blackout the Calkins trio after they merged with Raycom (who was in a dispute).

By the way, could've the Calkins trio (WWSB/WTXL/WAAY) been blacked out from Dish after they were sold to Raycom?
