Wow KFWB to be sold again!

Actually these same owners have been buying stations in other markets with sizable South Asian communities. They've been converting those stations to the same Hindi format. They may even be running the same music and programming in numerous markets and inserting local commercials in each city. So I doubt they're looking to sell their LA outlet.

That doesn't mean that something has come up to prompt them to sell KFWB. Maybe someone made them an offer for 980 they couldn't refuse. Or these owners have a better station lined up elsewhere on the LA dial. But I doubt it.

Interesting question.

Biggest signals:
KFI. Obviously not.
KNX. Same.
KLAC. Part of a deal with a team, just put in place.

Second tier signals in approximate order.
KFWB. They already have it.
KSPN. ESPN flagship, not going to sell unless ESPN gets an FM
KHJ. Just sold to Catholic group, and signal downgraded.
KDIS. Not really as good as 980.
KTNQ. No OC coverage at night, poor in parts of SFV and areas around Pomona.
KEIB. Like KTNQ, but just a bit worse.
KABC. Moving transmitter and losing some coverage.

Everything else is much worse.

KHJ. Just sold to Catholic group, and signal downgraded.

Signal downgraded? Have not read of this anywhere. What are the specifics of the downgrade, and why would they do so?

The downgrade occurred several years ago when the site off Venice was sold, and the station was triplexed into the KNLA towers off Alameda.

The new site has comparatively poor conductivity, and towers that are not quarter wave in height. In other words, a major downgrade in the facility.

More and more Ancient Modulation stations are being diplexed or triplex because the ground under the sticks is extremely valuable. Cumulus is selling the dirt under KABC and WMAL for BIG $$ and piggybacking on another station's tower(s). In both cases, a downgrade in coverage - but they've seen the writing on the wall and are cashing in while they still can!

"the ground under the sticks is extremely valuable"

This discussion got me checking the "coverage" of some of these stations, and a nice surprise was finding out through a Google search about the array for 1020 AM and 1150 AM. Fascinating reading if you're a radio freak/radio junkie like I am.

Makes Universal Media Access look like brilliant businessmen, who pocket $3.2 million in the process. I imagine the new owners will get certain studio and transmission assets added this past year, but it's still a windfall. Who says you can't make money with AM radio? Way to fatten the pig.

Whatever they do with the station, they will win.

They could move big biller KWKW to 980, and then move the KIRN format to 1330. Or put the Farsi format directly on 980, which has better coverage of the San Fernando Valley Persian community than 1330 does.

KIRN-670 could be kept as a repeater (just as KWKW has the 1220 Pomona repeater) or sold. They previously made an attempt to increase KIRN to 50 kw using a site near Little Rock, but the challenges of sending a signal across the San Andreas faultline were discovered to be significant during low power propagation testing.

The other website is reporting that KFWB has been sold to Lotus for 11.2 million. Lotus also owns 1330 KWKW

And KIRN, the LA area's Farsi station.

So where was Lotus when the Trust sold 9~Eighty for such a low price? After all, KHJ sold for close to $10m. The purchase makes a lot of sense for Lotus, but again...why were they late to the party?

Indeed. Lotus has stated that the new format will be announced on Monday, Oct. 17. If they don't move ESPN Deportes to 980, and decide to bring back say CBS Sports Radio and English language Sports Talk back to the station, all their play-by-play contracts have scattered elsewhere. Of course, behind the scenes, they may already have lured Kings Hockey away from KABC.

also 1330 am Espn Deportes is now on 95.5 KLOS HD 2

Are they on HD2 or HD3? I noticed that 95.5 has had an empty HD3 for the past several weeks. HD2 has been occupied by co-owned 790KABC, so I would doubt they would bump their sister station, but do see it as logical to put ESPN Deportes on their newly launched HD3.

The typo in when KTLK became KEIB was funny! Hey, nice trick if you could do it.
