2017 Media Predictions

Let's hear your predictions for 2017 in the television, online and radio world.

Here are some from Variety:
https://variety.com/2016/biz/news/2017-entertainment-media-predictions-1201941906/

I have a few of my own:

The GOP-controlled FCC will raise the TV station ownership cap from 35% to 49%.

Some cable networks will go dark as cord cutting intensifies.

More rural cable systems will shut down due to higher costs and dwindling subscriber numbers.

More FM stations will flip to spoken-word formats.

Twitter will be sold, but for less than what it's worth.

And one non-media prediction:
Sears Holdings will finally throw in the towel and file Chapter 11.

Both of these might happen, but not next year.

More rural cable systems will shut down due to higher costs and dwindling subscriber numbers.

DirecTV and Dish will take up the slack, if they haven't already.

More FM stations will flip to spoken-word formats.

We've been hearing that for years. Political and sports talk was supposed to be dead on Ancient Modulation 5 years ago. Hasn't happened yet.

Twitter will be sold, but for less than what it's worth.

If Twitter is sold for more than $1, it's overvalued. Twitter is to social media as Lee Harvey Oswald was to gun owners. It needs to go away, preferably yesterday. :(

And one non-media prediction:
Sears Holdings will finally throw in the towel and file Chapter 11.

Not Chapter 11, but Chapter 7 -- total liquidation. Sears and KMart are finished, and few outside of their employees will care.

We could see a media company attempt to buy a another broadcaster or a network

The cross ownership rules could be lifted

A foreign company ready to move in if the FCC lifts the rules that limits their stakes

Every AM station in America will have a translator, somewhere on the FM dial, mucking up the band some more. Unless they are in the top 25 biggest markets.
K-Mart will completely shut down. Heck, they shut down MY local store about a week ago (Yakima). Sears will hang by a thread (at least there are enough people still buying Kenmore products).
The spectrum auction will take at least 10-15% of full-powered TV stations off the air completely. Secondary PBS stations, Spanish networks (outside high Hispanic areas like Los Angeles and Houston), some TBN/Daystar stations and some My Network TV/CW stations might go off completely, or in the case of MNTV/CW, turn into DT2 or 3 subchannels on Big 4 stations.
With the FCC planning on taking out channels 31-50 for DTV use, more DTV stations will take over low-VHF (channels 2-6), thus allowing for more DX/E-skip opportunities.
DTV America will continue building little digital LPTVs with 10 different subchannels throughout the country.

DirecTV and Dish will take up the slack, if they haven't already.

Depending on what AT&T does, of course. They keep talking as if DirecTV is about to become a streaming-only company. I don't think it will actually happen, but you never know.

A foreign company ready to move in if the FCC lifts the rules that limits their stakes

Univision will probably be first on the list. They sought an FCC waiver to allow higher foreign ownership.

K-Mart will completely shut down. Heck, they shut down MY local store about a week ago (Yakima). Sears will hang by a thread (at least there are enough people still buying Kenmore products).

K-Mart and Sears are the same company. If the company goes out of business, they're both dead unless someone suicidal decides to buy one brand name or the other out of bankruptcy.

You've not been paying attention. The auction stands at 84 MHz right now, meaning that if it closes at this stage, the TV band will be 2-36. If it fails, the next attempt will have the TV band at 2-38.

Which also means the number of stations going off the air will be much less than 10-15%. At this point even the speculators with no interest in broadcasting at all might end up staying on the air.

WJZ FINALLY gets a new set.

WSVN and WHDH expand to 4am with WFTV expanding to 4:30am.

A 24/7 local cable news channel finally comes to serve the LA Metro region.

Bay News 9 and News 13 gets rebranded in January of February as well as InfoMas and BHN Travel Weather Now.

Philly is the next market to get weekend news at 5:00pm.

Diversified Comm. gets taken over by Gray.

Local weather channels in the Top 10 will disappear.

FS1 and FS2 will disappeate due to low ratings, despite a comeback.

ABC, through ESPN, will finally be let into the Super Bowl deal with the other three networks.

WGXA will FINALLY go HD. Its embarrassing when even WMGT is in widescreen.

That's all I got.

Or sell them back to legitimate broadcasters, which might as well happen in Boston with WMFP.

One more to add:

At least one nationally distributed diginet will leave the air or move to streaming only.

A couple more:

- Epix will close up shop due to Lionsgate's acquisition of Stars, with Paramount going to HBO and MGM to Showtime.

-That overplayed "Passages Malibu" commercial which has been airing since at least 2010 will continue to air, and will see the "Hershey's Kisses Bells" again for Christmas 2017.

Look for Amazon to make a splash in international soccer (my guess is that it gets the FA Cup) Digital brands Bleacher Report and Barstool Sports will launch linear TV brands with cable networks WME-IMG won’t see a bidding war for UFC rights. NBC will say no. CBS will take a pass. ESPN will show little interest

ItsRoly4266 said "FS2 will disappeate due to low ratings, despite a comeback." Fixed. I don't think FS1 is going anywhere, it's a moneymaker for Fox. A lot of Sprint Cup races are on there, as is college football games from rather popular teams. FS2 is a lost cause.

Hate to say this, but I could see GSN getting rid of ALL of their older game shows (Press Your Luck, Card Sharks, etc) and replacing them with Family Feud reruns and reruns of GSN programming (like Catch 21 or Chain Reaction). EVERY TIME I watch GSN, it's always Harvey Feud.

In the Yakima Tri-Cities market, KIMA and KEPR will still continue to use 2006 Fisher graphics on their news, and use that bare-bones blue set with the HD monitors displaying the Action News logo. Or, KIMA might start closing up shop and sending their 5PM news to KEPR (mornings and weekends are combined "KIMA KEPR Action News"), thus only a local newscast at 6PM (and pre-recorded from KEPR at 11PM).
KVEW and KAPP will still use that silly green screen set. The view of the Tri-Cities behind the anchor looks OK...but it's actually a green screen (even the DESK is green! Jeez!) No wonder they are dead last in both markets.

DirecTV and Dish will NOT go straight to streaming-only. That would put millions of people, like my relatives (without internet), with only an antenna and networks to watch.

Five new cities will be added to Bravo's "Real Housewives" lineup. Like they need more, but Andy Cohen loves it!

FS1 seems strong to me, though I don't really understand why they dump out of Colin Cowherd's show occasionally to show World Soccer. Could be a "me" problem...( I do like them as the secondary college football channel after Fox-Entertainment, they showed some good games this past season.)

GSN used to be fun with an occasional classic game show, but apparently they don't score ratings-wise. I would watch, especially old Passwords, To Tell The Truth, or even the silly Matchgame from the 70's. What's My Line was also classic! Do we really need 8 hours of Family Feud a day?

I agree about Eastern Washington local tv, as noted in other threads. It is bare bones for sure, and no significant effort to improve it. It is almost as if they have given up. "Why bother?" is the attitude.

DirectTV actually does it pretty well here at the dawn of 2017. I have never had "Dish" so I can't comment. But Direct with the merger with AT&T seems to be a player. I have been with them for several months now, and I like their service. Even with a recent snow event, my coverage has been uninterrupted. I also like their free DVR, and even their suggestions for my viewing, (though somewhat Orwellian, are right on the mark). My small complaint is they send you a lot of emails which apparently are hard to unsubscribe from.

Predictions: More anti-Trump on the news channels, and continued pressure on his Presidency. Yep, more Bravo shows that highlight beautiful people who get in fights and/or exist in a bubble that most of us can't relate to, yet still eat up. More "wasteland" local morning shows. More "wasteland" in the moment tv shows, taking up where the tabloids have left off. IMO, this is the biggest increase we will see. More "TMZ", and "Right This Minute" type shows, more video from the internet. Blah, blah, blah.

Yeah we need 8 hours of Steve Harvey per day! (sarcasm)
GSN gets lots of revenue from Harvey's Feud! Might as well name the network "Feud" at this point. Their whole lineup in the late 1990s was classic game shows...including TPIR (before they lost the rights in April 2000). It was a game show lover's dream. BUZZR could be the next classic Game Show Network, but with only a dozen or so shows (and no TPIR), they might get boring fast.

When KLEW-3 Lewiston (with a metro area of only 60,000+) has a better news set than 29/19, something is really messed up. They have a gorgeous Lewiston/Clarkson skyline behind the anchors. They even have two co-anchors!

Lewiston/Clarkston has a skyline? News to me. :)

Seriously, though I agree with you. GSN is a joke. I can stomach "The Chase" for short periods of time, but beyond that I have no reason to watch. (oh, and how bad was "Deal or No Deal?"..like watching lottery drawings, except you don't have a ticket!)

For 2017 those "fake" news websites will play havoc with CBS, CNN, ABC, NBC, FOX, AP, WTOP Newsradio and so forth......ah forget 2017 it is happening now. A few days ago most of the Denver radio & TV outlets even the Denver Post all did stories about the child that died in the arms of Santa Clause. On Facebook people just couldn't get enough of this. "OMG..SO SAD !!" or "Pray for the family"...and now I am hearing reports that the story about the child dying and Santa is fake. If this turns out to be fake than I am NOT surprised.

I haven't heard whether or not this particular story is real, but it won't surprise me if it turns out to be fake. As long as news department (and probably sales) suits demand "Live, local, & first" rather than "Live, local, & right," these things will happen.

Same goes for network news operations. Especially network news operations. The most blatant of bad network news coverage, not counting this past Presidential campaign, that I can think of was the Sandy Hook shootings 4 years ago. All speculation at first, with little real news, just so the network common taters could have something to say when they didn't know squat. That wasn't the only one -- even 9/11 had more than its share of that -- but at least to me, that was the worst.
