2017 Grammy Awards on CBS

Five years into the current 10-year contract between CBS and The Recording Academy, the two sides have extended their agreement for the Grammy Awards for five more years. The pact, signed yesterday by CBS Corp. chairman Leslie Moonves and The Recording Academy president and CEO Neil Portnow in Studio City, will keep the Grammys on CBS through 2026. That will be a 54-year run for the top music awards show, which has been airing on CBS since 1973, setting a new record for the longest continuous partnership between an awards show and a broadcaster in television history.

After moving from their longtime Sunday home to Monday this year to lower ratings, the upcoming 59th annual Grammy Awards will air again on Sunday.

The 59th Annual Grammy Awards will take place live on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2017 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, airing from 8:00 – 11:30 p.m. ET/PT.

It's that last part that ticks me off, I guess CBS has to protect 60 Minutes.

One of these days, enough 60 Minutes watchers will die off that CBS will air awards shows live on both coasts all the time and won't make it impossible to watch their Sunday lineup during football season. Networks have yet to learn that if you're not airing it live you might as well not air it at all.

The Grammys are about the only awards show I used to care anything about seeing. Now I've gone to looking at their website and look at the "awards presented earlier" because that's where most of what I'm interested in is posted before the show starts, and all they do is read it off during the show anyway.

There is some risk to committing to this for so long....the ratings for this, like so many other awards shows could tank because of changing tastes.

CBS would then have paid for long term rights for a money loser. I haven't watched for years for the most part, but the show does seem to attract a decent demographic and overall audience.

James Corden to host 2017 Grammy Awards

The Late Late Show star James Corden will host the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, replacing longtime MC, LL Cool J. CBS announced the change on Tuesday (Nov. 22), marking an end to the rap star's run of hosting the show for five years from 2012-2016. Tony-winner Corden has a long history in musical theater and has made his singing-with-the-stars "Carpool Karaoke" segment into a viral sensation.

“Thanks to ‘Carpool Karaoke,’ we’ve all been on some incredible rides with James, and The Recording Academy couldn’t be more excited to welcome his passion and enthusiasm for music, both as an entertainer and a fan, to the Grammy stage on Feb. 12,” Recording Academy President CEO Neil Portnow said in a statement. “He’s got big shoes to fill after the magnificent run we had with LL Cool J, but James Corden is a commanding, dynamic showman who, we believe, is perfect to host the GRAMMY Awards.”

The British comedian whose infectious enthusiasm is a hallmark of his TV persona said, "I am truly honored to be hosting The Grammys next year. It's the biggest, most prestigious award show in music, and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such an incredible night."

Going by this press release, this year's Grammys will air live across the country and have a red carpet pre-show, shortening 60 Minutes to 30 minutes.

CBS will air GRAMMY RED CARPET LIVE, an entertainment special hosted by Nancy O'Dell and Kevin Frazier (ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT), prior to the GRAMMY Awards broadcast, Sunday, Feb. 12 (7:30-8:00 PM, live ET/4:30-5:00 PM, live PT, check local listings for Mountain time) on the CBS Television Network. The GRAMMY Awards action kicks off early at the STAPLES Center when Nancy O'Dell and Kevin Frazier give viewers an insiders' view of all the pre-show excitement with music's biggest stars before they take the stage for Music's Biggest Night(R). Preceding the GRAMMY RED CARPET LIVE special, 60 MINUTES will air a special 30-minute edition (7:00-7:30 PM, ET/4:00-4:30 PM, PT).

Nancy O'Dell and Kevin Frazier serve as co-hosts of ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT, the #1 syndicated entertainment news magazine in the world.

THE 59TH ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS(R) will be broadcast live from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles Sunday, Feb. 12 (8:00 - 11:30 PM, live ET/5:00 - 8:30 PM, live PT) on the CBS Television Network. Award-winning host and performer James Corden will host the show for the first time.

Previously announced performers include John Legend, Metallica, Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban. Additional performers will be announced soon.

The key thing is for the show and the awards to ADAPT to those changing tastes. I recall they had gone stale a few years ago, but they've since kicked things up a notch. I imagine CBS has a role in the booking of performers and presenters, as they do with the ACMs. They also have a role in choosing the hosts and the airdate.

2017 Grammy's. Thoughts?

Not a great show tonight, not a bad show tonight. I do appreciate that they treat this show as a music show, not a comedy. In fact, most of the comedy attempts were just mildly funny IMO. It has become somewhat a coronation of what the populace likes, and that is OK, but when Adele wins over and over it does become a little predictive and somewhat less exciting...not that she doesn't deserve her awards. Would have liked to have seen some of the newer groups showcased like 21 Pilots. They were nominated but never had a chance in any category. Not so much criticism of the show, but perhaps it could be more inclusive of some up and coming artists by offering some performances? Just IMO.

I haven't watched it yet but I taped it and selected "Keep until I delete". I did watch the part that aired after the No. 6 "Fast and Furious" movie finished up. I liked the music from the people who died. Other than that, there wasn't much to it for me. Certainly nothing that interested me in the last two categories. And it's hardly an "awards" show considering they give out only a small fraction of the awards.

If they were nominated for New Artist of the Year, they got a slot. Otherwise what makes one new artist more deserving that any other?

I taped it"DVDed" all 4 in a half hours of it with 60 minutes and the red carpet pre-show and probably skim though it later this week .Not into the current trend of music but interested in the classic artists and bands but I'm happy to see Adele win last night then those other people.

By a "slot", do you mean performance? If so, I must have some how missed 21 Pilots. I do tend to be a somewhat hyperactive remote operator, or in other words, a guy.

The Grammys really illustrate the current state of music, boring and predictable. They had to fill time with carpool Karaoke and other James Corden bits. Neil Diamond didn't even remember the words to sweet Caroline during that segment. It's the same performers on all of these Music Award shows. Nothing is new and entertaining. It's become very stale filled with bad audio and gaffs.
