Scott Fitzgerald WBT

I thought I'd give him a while and judge him after he's had time to settle in.

My verdict? Worst hire on the station in years.

Tries to be funny, too much innuendo, doesn't listen to most callers, those he does listen to he just mocks.

I disagree here. I find him laid back and personable, and he tries to be topical. He always interviews the ABC reporters for updates on national news topics. And he is more middle of the road rather than far right like Limbaugh. Seems like a nice congenial host . If you prefer the more opinionated and domineering type, I thought Neal Boortz was very good at that. But he has now retired from WSB and I don't care for Herman Cain as his replacement. But as far as WBT, I never quite understood why Entercom chose to release Keith Larson. He was gone day one when they took over. But I would guess for salary reasons moreso than ratings. As they also released a very good veteran newsman Jim Barroll.

I liked him, but looks like the powers that be did not. Apparently Scott Fitzgerald is out at WBT. Former host Vince Coakley is back, possibly originating from Entercom Upstate station WORD in Greenville, where he has been since he departed WBT the first time. I thought Fitzgerald was congenial and topical, often interviewing newsmakers and ABC correspondents. Now with Vince Coakley the show is more partisan from a conservative point of view, but perhaps this is temporary until a new host can be found. While Coakley seems knowledgeable and informed, the show is a bit boring and lacks the entertainment value of a Rush Limbaugh or Neal Boortz. And he did not get good ratings at WBT the first time under previous owners, but now Entercom may try him out again. And I remember back when he was the Eyewitness News anchor on WSOC-TV Channel 9.

Time to bring back Keith Larson.
They made a mistake, time to fix it.

John Hancock had Keith Larson visit his show last week to discuss the death of Robert D. Raiford. But I don't think they will bring him back. Larson now has a podcast and I believe a show on AM-730.

But I am still curious about the sudden departure of Scott Fitzgerald. Was there a problematic incident that resulted in his departure, or were the ratings not good? I actually liked is show and thought he had a congenial, appealing style that was somewhat middle of the road in terms of politics. And he was always topical in terms of current events, interviewing local newsmakers and national ABC correspondents.

As for Vince Coakley, is this a temporary move, or do they plan to bring him back permanently? It is ironic he was previously released from WBT by the previous owners, only to be brought back again by Entercom. He is intelligent and articulate, but I still think his show becomes a bit boring and lacks the entertainment value of Limbaugh, Hannity, or Neal Boortz. Afterall, it is show business, as the late Robert D. Raiford used to say. As of now, I think Vince Coakley still originates from Entercom Upstate station WORD-106.3. Unless they move him back to Charlotte. I did like Coakley as a news anchor on WSOC-TV Channel 9, but I don't guess he wants to return to TV.

Also, apparently the 9am hour has brought former Mayor and Governor Pat McCrory back to WBT, with a current events show moderated by morning anchor Bo Thompson. I enjoy this show, and I always liked McCrory as Mayor of Charlotte. He had a good, moderate and centrist approach to politics at that time, but unfortunately overreacting to Jennifer Roberts and HB2 cost him the governor's job in Raleigh. Although I do agree with him the bathroom bill was over reaching and problematic, and there should have been a better compromise solution. But not trying to restart that debate, just nice to hear him on WBT.

Charlotte Observer story today said Scott Fitzgerald is now working on other Entercom stations, whatever that means. But he was apparently moved to make way for Pat McCrory program and they decided to bring back Vince Coakley to fill the other 2 hours. Not sure yet if Coakley change is permanent; may depend upon ratings and I think his show may still originate from WORD Entercom Upstate in Greenville, SC. The news story mainly focused upon McCrory and his return to WBT.
