Has this happened before?

FOX switched to the Redskins/Rams game because the Cowboys/Broncos game was suspended by lightning. They've done it on baseball, but it's the first time i've seen them do it on the NFL.

Not often, but it does happen. They play through rain, sleet, snow, and fog, but never through lightning. Those goal posts are metal, and make great lightning rods.

Yes. There was a game at Soldier Field a couple of seasons ago which was delayed by lighting and FOX switched away instead of vamping for an hour. I don't recall the specifics, but Google probably does if you're interested.

College games are delayed by lightning -- or even the presence of lightning in the airea -- fairly frequently, especially early in the season. It's uncommon in the pros, I guess because the players are (nudge-nudge, wink-wink) students participating an an (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) extracurricular activity rather than professionals whose lives apparently aren't that important.

I wonder how late FOX will stick with this game- given that NBC has an exclusive window.

That's a great question. I'm sure its covered in the contract. There probably won't be much of an overlap. NBC could just delay the start of their game by a few minutes.

Fox is obligated to stick with a game to the end. So I would guess that is the clause the they'll go with.

HOLD ON! NBC just announced that there has been a 5 minute delay in the start of their game. I guess the NFL stepped in to preserve the exclusive.

Interesting scenerio today, I was at the reverse end of it, however. My region got Seattle/San Francisco, (unfortunately), but because of the delay was able to see the entire 4th quarter of the Dallas game as "bonus coverage". Too bad the game was a blow-out. The over-rated Cowboys took a beating today! Don't mind that at all. :)

Another reason you see more lightning delays in college football than the NFL is because more college stadiums have aluminum bleachers. Aluminum bleachers are rare in NFL stadiums. The NFL Red Zone has to sign off at 8PM Eastern, I think due to league rules related to contracts with other TV partners. A few minutes before the top of the hour, they directed viewers to switch to the Fox affiliate to see the end of the Broncos/Cowboys game, then did the normal sign off following the touchdown montage.

I really like NFL Redzone always watch the channel when the Lions aren't on mainly watching the late games as the Lions always play the early games on Sunday. Since they played on Monday night watch Redzone all day.

Directv offers one free year of Redzone for new customers. Then, if you don't cancel, it will automatically be renewed at (IMO) a cost too high. But there are some who will pay for this, and if you are a hardcore fan and/or fantasy player it probably is a must.

I did not mean to confuse Redzone from Sunday Ticket, two different products. But both are a must for the hardcore fan/fantasy player.

On the other hand, this affects those of us in the East. When I started watching "The Orville" it was joined in progress. There are two problems with this. My TiVo Roamio refuses to record reruns unless I know in advance a rerun will air and tell it to, though occasionally for whatever reason it WILL record reruns. The other problem is that when I start watching, I won't know what's going on.

Fox always does that with late games. When the regional game ends on Fox and another regional game is still going on, they will feed the last few minutes of another regional game instead of going to postgame commentary the whole time. I don't think CBS does this.

I've seen CBS do it. Last year, after the NE/DEN game, they joined the Raiders-Chargers game in progress. So they can switch, it just depends on the competitiveness of the game they're switching to.

Last Sunday, did Fox treat "The Orville" like they did Malcolm, King of the Hill, Futurama, and Simpsons around 2004-2006? At least 5 minutes of commercials after postgame, then theme song to "The Orville," several more minutes of commercials, then the announcement that the show will be joined in progress. We talked about this frequently on this board back in Fox's pre-The OT days.

i think the entire episode air uninterrupted but delay here in Dallas, it's possible your Fox station had a separate feed that joined in progress to keep it on time, i know the show air in it's entirety here, and i didn't hear no "We now join this program already in progress" disclaimer, also you could be on the west coast and saw the encore of the pilot episode be Joined in Progress so they can air the show on time, as it's something common with West coast feeds.

I didn't hear a "joined in progress" message but there was no V-chip rating and the first scene just didn't look like the start of the show.

I think they always air The Simpsons episodes whole
