Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Yet another copyright notice...NOT a strike.
Some if not most episodes of the original Maury Povich Show (1991-98) could be blocked worldwide by NBC Universal. I now have a January 1992 episode on a worldwide block. Not sure if I have it on Dailymotion but it will have to go there if I don't. Thank goodness not a strike. Sad, because his first run was 1000x better than his current show.
No tapes this weekend, the only tape I found was three movies off HBO without any promos. That goes into the dud pile right away. I do have 13 tapes coming in from Wahpeton, ND however, off eBay. One of my fellow YouTubers (Michael Pannoni) bought one of these lots about a week ago and found 1990 Married...with Children episodes off KVRR, 1996 Comedy Central reruns of Soap, and some early 2000s stuff. One of my lot's labels is an early-mid 1980s Scotch with a Dymo label. We'll see what happens. Usually Dymo labels are a good sign for very old content. Maybe more MWC on some of these tapes.

what is your dailymotion channel called and can we do a deal?

also part 3 is not blocked, and it is not on DM as we speak, just to let you know about that

Part 3 not blocked but it could be soon. I don't need another darn worldwide block or even worse, a strike.
But I don't have time to put them on DM right now with endless college HW and working a few substitute teaching jobs per week. In fact I was so busy on Halloween, that I finally ended up posting the latest 1993 KNDO stuff during the time the kids showed up for trick-or-treating...
Still waiting on the 13-tape lot from North Dakota. Two more ND lots are up, one with a few VK250 cases (but the tapes inside seem to be newer or different than a normal VK-250 casing). The Michael Pannoni accounts will have some awesome stuff on there soon. He bought over 70 VHS tapes and 40 Betas from El Paso, TX. The first 18 VHS tapes already came in, and every single one is a keeper and full of '80s and '90s gold. SNLs galore, soap operas, early It's Showtime at the Apollo, two newscasts from KTSM (NBC), a December 1987 60 Minutes, etc. Many of the Beta's that are coming, were marked with Y&R and 'soaps' along with plenty of movies and the Johnny Carson 19th Anniversary special from 1981.

As finding videos at second-hand stores here in Fargo has been hit and miss

I've been finding out lately that another good place to find videos of classic TV airchecks outside of YouTube is the Internet Archive (archive.org). I know of one user who has uploaded a LOT of VHS rips of full-length TV broadcasts with original commercials to that website. He mostly uploads concert specials, made-for-TV movies and miniseries, some of which I have in my collection as well (e.g. Jesus on CBS, Storm of the Century on ABC, The Stand on ABC, Tremors on NBC, Billy Ray Cyrus: Dreams Come True on ABC, etc.), along with occasional TV show episodes and news broadcasts (e.g. Freakylinks, The X-Files, Spin City, 20/20, Nightline, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Lois & Clark). This guy actually happens to be one of the Internet Archive's most active contributors.

Yet another contributor, who uses the screenname "loveforlogos," has actually uploaded many of the home-recorded VHS tapes he has in full from beginning to end, with all of the programs on each tape incorporated into one video.

The NFL has been blocking games a lot from Youtube, but VK and Google Plus are pretty good places to find games. NASCAR doesn't seem to do much blocking, nor does the NBA.

The NFL has been blocking games a lot from Youtube, but VK and Google Plus are pretty good places to find games. NASCAR doesn't seem to do much blocking, nor does the NBA.

You are correct, here is a list of ones that are super strict with blocking (on Youtube at least):

-WWE (basically any old WWF programming, some of the other federations, but less so, they block old Pay Per View cards the quickest_)
-NFL (games sometimes are blocked and taken down WITHIN HOURS)
The NFL is the only one that is trying to actively monetize old games through their own channel, yet these broadcasts are missing the studio portions and commercials
-NHL (they used to be as bad as the NFL but are getting slower at blocking)

These seem to not care:

-Anything NCAA, any sport. My guess is that the rights management is a lot more complicated than any pro league
-MLB (slower than they used to be, I've seen stuff last months, if not years, surprising given they have their own Youtube channel)
-Olympics (not many broadcast blocks up online, but few have been taken down)
-NBA (like the MLB, very slow at blocking/removal)

If you see something on Youtube from the 1st list, be sure to download it for your personal use ASAP, as it may be gone by the end of the day. I recommend the downloading program, Freemake Video Downloader for grabbing Youtube videos, other programs may also work, but I dont have much experience with those.

After about a month of not having any luck finding anything, I went ahead and splurged on a 55-tape lot from an eBay seller in the Chattanooga suburb of Ooltewah, Tennessee. Some of the labeling I saw on the tapes in the photos included shows like Renegade, Hawaii Five-O, Rin Tin Tin K-9 Cop, The Marshal, Bewitched, Matlock, In the Heat of the Night, various western movies including John Wayne, some movies from other genres, and who knows what else. Many of the tapes didn't have labels on the front, but I at least have an idea of what's on some of them. Should be here within the next week or two.

To give you an idea of some of the local advertising and broadcasting that would likely be included on these tapes, this YouTube channel has plenty of broadcasting archives from that market.

BM10K,
You are more likely to find home-recorded content at estate sales or yard sales than second-hand stores. I don't deal with thrift stores as often as I used to, and that's always for items that aren't VHS tapes. But at the estate sales, they are trying to sell off ALL the contents of the house, or whatever the family didn't take. This includes VHS tapes and I've seen some impressive home-recorded collections at some houses.

I got the Wahpeton lot about a week ago, and here's what I've found:
Tape 1 - 6 episodes of Hill Street Blues taped off WGN/9 Chicago in late October and early November 1988 with commercials. Scotch T-120
Tape 2 - Austin City Limits episode taped off KFME/PBS 5/18/1990; On Stage (Sweethearts of the Rodeo) taped off TNN 12/28/1990 with commercials; some Nashville Now clips of Sweethearts of the Rodeo taped off TNN in late 1990 or early 1991 with commercials; last 10 minutes of the A&E Diamond Showcase: Connie Francis, A Legend in Concert taped off A&E 5/20/1990 with commercials; ends with about 10 minutes of Rescue 911 taped off KXJB/CBS 9/24/1989 with commercials. Scotch T-120.
Tape 3 - 6 episodes of Hill Street Blues taped off WGN/9 Chicago in April 1989 with commercials. Laser T-120
Tape 4 - Joan Baez in Concert and part of Women's Song taped off KFME/PBS in March 1993 with promos. MGM T-120
Tape 5 - Episode of Married...with Children taped off KVRR/FOX 9/3/1989 with commercials; partial episode of Austin City Limits taped off PBS (presumed KFME) 8/12/1989; Cher at the Mirage taped off KXJB/CBS 2/4/1991 with commercials. JVC Premium T-120.
Tape 6 - End of Prairie News Journal and first half-hour of Austin City Limits taped off KFME/PBS 3/27/1993 with promos (guest Kathy Mattea); another Kathy Mattea performance taped off TNN's On Stage circa 1993; American Music Shoppe (with Mattea again) taped off TNN in December 1993 minus commercials; last several minutes of the Cheers finale taped 5/20/1993 (off KTHI-11, I assume); partial syndicated rerun of Roseanne taped off KXJB/4 in March 1993 with commercials; part of 'High Ice' (1980) taped off HBO 3/8/1993; last few mins of News 4 at 10 and partial rerun of Roseanne taped off KXJB/4 12/27/1992 with commercials; ends with the first couple minutes of a Married..with Children rerun off KXJB in SP mode. Scotch T-120
Tape 7 - The Judds' Farewell Concert taped off KFME/PBS 8/13/1995 with promos and a pledge break, in SP mode. MGM T-120
Tape 8 - 6 episodes of Hill Street Blues taped off WGN/9 Chicago on 11/30, 12/1, 12/2, 12/5, 12/6 and 12/7/1988 with commercials; tape ends with a partial commercial break and about a minute of 'Wolfen' taped off WDAY/ABC 1/3/1985 with commercials in SP mode. Scotch T-120 (from the early 1980s).
Tape 9 - Nashville Now clip with Holly Dunn taped off TNN circa 1992; episode of On Stage (Holly Dunn) taped off TNN in September 1992 with commercials; another episode of On Stage (with Sweethearts of the Rodeo) taped off TNN 1/11/1993 with commercials. Laser T-120
I also found one or two more tapes with Hill Street Blues on them, all off WGN in 1988/89 with commercials. There were a couple of duds; one had a Juice Newton performance on TNN's Nashville Now with the commercials edited (and the majority of the tape blank); and one had a Dave Koz concert in Trinidad/Tobago (off KFME with no promos) and a Yanni concert copied from the retail tape.
There were more lots available; 8 tapes with very old early '80s boxes (VK-250 and such) but they had newer tapes inside...another Hill Street Blues tape for example. Another lot of 10 had a few MGM T-120s, an old Fuji, an old Sony Dynamicron, etc. Footage from ND is generally hard to find on YouTube. It's ranked below market 100 in the Nielsen DMA ratings. Too bad I haven't seen lots show up from Bismarck or Minot, as footage from KXMB, KBMY, KFYR etc. are harder to find than Fargo.
Really considering another lot from Helena, MT as that market is very small in size. More footage from KTVH, KFBB, etc. is always welcome to my YT channel. But will it be more footage from Spokane like the last lot? I've still got plenty of that to go through, mainly soaps and news clips from 1995-98.

Nice Lot! But When I See Any PBS Things That People Get, They Don't Record The Kids Stuff! It Will Be A MIRACLE If You And Anybody Found Any PBS Kids Stuff. I Know Scott Has Some PBS KIDS Stuff.

Okay, here's the first of my findings from my huge tape lot from Ooltewah. To begin with, one tape that came in the box--a Maxell T-120 supposedly containing the 2012 Hatfields & McCoys miniseries on the History Channel--had broken, so I never had the chance to look at it. Also, just about all of the local content I've found thus far has been from the Nashville market, not Chattanooga as I had initially thought. Not bad finds overall thus far and I'm not even halfway through yet!

TAPE 1: Episode of Rin Tin Tin: K-9 Cop and partial episode of T and T taped from the Family Channel in April 1990 with commercials. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 2: Episodes of Some Enchanted Islands and A World Away taped from the Discovery Channel in March 1992 with commercials; National Geographic: Lost Kingdoms of the Maya taped from WDCN in January 1993 with a couple of promos before the show; two episodes of In Search Of taped from A&E in January 1993 with commercials, owner's C-band satellite receiver then flips over to HBO for the end credits of Inside the NFL and part of Ultimate Desires (1991) with promos in between; partial broadcast of In the Eyes of a Stranger (CBS made-for-TV movie) taped from WTVF on 4/7/1992 with a few commercials; partial broadcast of The Return of Sabata (1971) taped from TNT in January 1992 with commercials. Polaroid T-120.

TAPE 3: Last few minutes of 60 Minutes, episode of Touched by an Angel and both parts of Jesus (2000 CBS miniseries) taped from WTVF on April 8 and 11, 2001 with commercials, along with the first 13 minutes of the latter night's News Channel 5 10:00 Report with Chris Clark--I already have the original broadcast of this miniseries taped from WOIO in Cleveland. Polaroid T-120.

TAPE 4: City Slickers (1991) taped from Hallmark Channel in March 2006 with commercials; City Slickers II: The Legend of Curly's Gold (1994) taped from HBO Family in March 2006 with promos before the movie; Drums Across the River (1954) and part of Walk the Proud Land (1956) taped from AMC in March 2006 with commercials. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 5: The Magnificent Seven (1960) taped from TCM in June 2005; Cimmaron (1960) and part of Roughly Speaking (1945) taped from TCM in June 2005 with promos in between; partially taped-over broadcast of Out of Annie's Past (1995) and part of Dead Silent (1999) taped from Lifetime in March 2005 with commercials. Sony T-120.

TAPE 6: Rio Lobo (1970) and part of Springfield Rifle (1952) taped from TBS in February 1994, some commercial breaks are paused out, but most are included. Sony T-120.

TAPE 7: The Parent Trap (1998) taped from Disney Channel in November 2006 with promos during the movie; The Parent Trap (1961) and partial episode of M*A*S*H taped from Hallmark Channel in November 2006 with commercials; most of Bewitched (2005) taped from Starz circa 2006. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 8: Hondo (1953) taped from WTVF in June 1991 with commercials--the film was presented in 3-D and, oddly enough, this movie preempted CBS prime time programming on WTVF that night. Generic T-120.

TAPE 9: The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) taped from Cinemax in May 1992 with a couple of promos before the movie; Ancient Secrets of the Bible (CBS special) and first segment of News Channel 5 10:00 Report with Chris Clark taped from WTVF on 5/15/1992 with commercials. Polaroid T-120.

TAPE 10: Man on Fire (2004) taped from FX in December 2006 with commercials; The Punisher (2004) and partial episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia taped from FX in January 2007 with commercials. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 11: Blue Hawaii (1961), Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962), Fun in Acapulco (1963) and part of Roustabout (1964) taped from AMC in January 2000 with promos in between. JVC T-120.

TAPE 12: Perfect Stranger (2007) and Catch and Release (2006) taped from Starz in February 2008 with promos in between; Mystery, Alaska (1999) and first ten minutes of Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Ole Miss Rebels basketball (Raycom Sports broadcast) taped from WUXP on 3/1/2008 with commercials. Sony T-120.

TAPE 13: Dirty Harry (1971), Magnum Force (1973), The Enforcer (1976), Sudden Impact (1983) and part of The Dead Pool (1988) taped from Cinemax in October 2007 with promos in between. At the first second of the tape is a very small snippet of what looks like a newscast from WTHR 13 Eyewitness News in Indianapolis--odd. Maxell T-160.

TAPE 14: Most of Memoirs of a Geisha (2005), Underworld: Evolution (2006), Guess Who (2005) and part of The Shaggy Dog (2006) taped from Starz in January 2007 with promos in between; partially taped-over broadcast of an unknown McBride movie and partial episode of M*A*S*H taped from Hallmark Channel in August 2006 with commercials. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 15: Bend of the River (1952) taped from AMC in November 2004 with commercials; Chisum (1970) and The Comancheros (1961) taped from Westerns in February 2005 with promos in between. TDK T-120.

TAPE 16: Monster-in-Law (2005), Being Julia (2004) and part of Wayne's World 2 (1993) taped from MoreMax in March 2006 with promos in between; partially taped-over broadcast of Second to Die (2002) taped from Lifetime in February 2006 with a few commercials; Augusta Gone (made-for-TV movie) and partial episode of Frasier taped from Lifetime on 3/1/2006 with commercials. Polaroid T-120.

TAPE 17: Two episodes of Matlock taped from WSMV on February 1 and 8, 1990 with commercials. Maxell T-120.

Still have a lot more to go through!

My process of going through these tapes from Tennessee has been put on hold for right now. After playing back one of the tapes, my VCR (a Magnavox VCR/DVD recorder combo) started making awful squealing sounds when I would play back any tapes, including trying to clean the heads with a blank tape. I've been finding out one way to clean the inside of it is to apply rubbing alcohol to the heads. I was wondering if anyone here could give me some instructions on how to take the unit apart and go about this process.

Meanwhile, here are some other tapes I've found from the lot:

TAPE 18: Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983), From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga (1983), The Colossus of New York (1958) and part of The Invisible Ray (1983) taped from the Sci-Fi Channel in July 1993 with commercials. Certron T-120.

TAPE 19: Both parts of Children of the Dust (1995 CBS miniseries) taped from WTVF on August 30 and September 1, 1998 with commercials; most of Guns of Diablo (1965) taped from TNT in September 1998 with commercials; part of Gremlins (1984) taped from Cinemax in March 1992 with promos beforehand. Polaroid T-120.

TAPE 20: The Quick and the Dead (1995) taped from TNN (Sofa Cinema with Bill Engvall) in October 1999 with commercials; Conagher (1991) taped from TNT in October 1999 with commercials; The Shooting (1966) and partial episode of Hollywood Fashion Machine taped from AMC in October 1999 with promos in between. Scotch T-120.

TAPE 21: The Cutting Edge (1992), The Cutting Edge 2: Going for the Gold (2006) and The Cutting Edge 3: Chasing the Dream (2008) taped from ABC Family on 3/16/2008 with commercials. RCA T-120.

TAPE 22: Broken Bridges (made-for-TV movie) taped from CMT in December 2006 with commercials; Getting Played (made-for-TV movie) taped from BET in December 2006 with commercials; most of Syriana (2005) taped from unknown pay TV channel circa 2006 or 2007. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 23: Roustabout (1964) and Paradise Hawaiian Style (1966) taped from AMC in January 2000 with promos in between; King Creole (1958) taped from AMC in January 2000 with promos in between. Polaroid T-120.

I remember as a teenager having a VCR and recording movies off of HBO, Showtime, and The Movie Channel. I stopped counting how many movies I taped after 100. Occasionally I would tape a documentary or a news program. The downside of the VCR were tapes jamming.

By the way I've been looking for an episode of Inside Edition. This episode aired in early October of 1999 and I can't find it anywhere.

I found some Inside Edition episodes from 1999 in a VHS lot back in April 2016, but they were taped in March and not early October. All with commercials taped off KTVK/3 Phoenix.

Rare estate sale in December! One tape found, the rest were all retail. She collected all types of stuff - clothes, huge jewelry collection, and a huge purse collection!
The tape included part 1 of 'Gone with the Wind' (1939) taped off TBS 12/14/1989 with commercials; Making of a Legend: Gone with the Wind, part 2 of the movie and part of '2010' (1984) taped off TBS 12/15/1989 with commercials.
I am currently going through plenty of holiday content on my YouTube channel. There's still many goodies on the way including some ABC soaps from December 2000 and December 2004. I'm also considering buying another Montana VHS lot; I had plenty of success with the last one even though 95% of the content came from other markets (and even countries...the AFN Germany stuff).

I have a tape of Gone with the Wind recorded from CBS (KCBS in Los Angeles) on January 11 and 12, 1987 with commercials. Oddly enough, this tape of LA footage was mixed into a lot of tapes that were mostly recorded from Boston and other surrounding markets in New England. These came in a 40-tape lot I bought from Amazon (believe it or not) in 2014.

I finally got my VCR back from the repair shop. Turns out one of the Tennessee tapes I played back was pretty severely degraded and some of the tape from the videocassette had come out of the cassette and had gotten stuck inside the mechanisms in the VCR, thus the squealing when playing back any tape. After a good internal cleaning from the technicians, everything seems to be working just fine now when I played back and digitized several tapes within the last couple of days. Here's hoping it stays that way for as long as possible. One tape I looked at last night included some hard-to-find international footage at the end, a ten-minute clip of a Japanese news talk show of some sort. The label at the top of the tape actually had Japanese handwriting, even though a Post-It note on the case listing recordings that taped over the Japanese footage was written in English (most of the tapes in this eBay lot were labeled using Post-It notes on the cases rather than at the end of the cassette itself).

Keep in mind, Japan uses NTSC just like the US and Canada. Anything taped in Japan can be played on an American VCR with no problem. Thanks (again) for posting the new KOMO stuff you found (an episode of 'The Marshal'). Maybe WKRN ran Billy Graham or some movie in the usual 10/9c Saturday timeslot that night, so they had to use the big dish.
