Date for WYCN switch to NBC Boston announced

Thanks for the information - sooner than I expected for the switch. So I wonder when WMFP-TV will switch to channel share with WWDP; I would assume that after January 16th the station's 60.5 channel will be gone. And will WBTS-LP even be need any longer?

WBTS-LP will at least be needed to provide coverage of Telemundo (and TeleXitos and Cozi TV) to Greater Boston. I wouldn't think NBCU would want to give up coverage of Telemundo in Boston.

From that,

Where do they get Ch.15?

See my NBC Boston channel dissection over at Boston-Radio-Interest.

So, does that mean they are going to be NBCBos:15 RF-43?

Here is the NBCUniversal FCC request to use ch. 15 for WYCN, which also explains that ch. 13 cannot continue to be used once they have become a full power station, due to the Portland overlap:

Sharing with WGBX will probably limit WYCN to reduced bandwidth, and 720p, just as 60.5 is limited. Only WBTS-LD is full 1080i, so they probably will want to keep that on the air until WNEU can move to Needham, which won't happen until the channel repack. Once WNEU is in Needham, the WBTS call letters will probably be moved there to a 1080i channel. Ch. 8 cannot be used for WBTS on the WNEU signal, due to the Portland ch. 8, so at that point they could use 60.x or move the 15.1 from WYCN, which really will no longer be needed.

It may be that the weather is too cold for the peacock to come out tonight...LOL!
The peacock has been pretty cold for the last 2 weeks...
Looking at the WGBX signal with TSReader shows nothing new - just the 3 streams labeled WGBX-HD, Create, and Kids.

Looks like the switch could take place tomorrow:

As of this afternoon, WYCN-CD sharted broadcasting on WGBX-TV's subchannel, and maps to PSIP 15.1 as WYCN-CD (and in full 1080p, not 720p as expected) as NBC Boston from WBTS-LP, and PSIP 15.2 is Cozi TV at 480p, something I was not expecting. In addition, WBTS-LP is still showing up as PSIP 60.5 as NBC Boston.

First of all.....thanks for the laugh!.....I needed that!

I'm also surprised at the inclusion of Cozi-TV. I still miss Antenna TV, but now having Cozi TV sorta helps make up for it.

WBTS-LD has Cozi on 8-2, but they never tried to squeeze that on WMFP along with 60-5.

Next channel shuffle will probably be 60-5 going away, and the WMFP signal at the same time or soon after. WMFP will most likely move SonLife and 62-1 to share on WWDP. So that leaves the question of whether they will also move Comet and / or Charge! to WWDP. They would fit.

I checked to see what NBC Boston might do at midnight on ch 60-5, since March 31 was to be their last day sharing with WMFP (scheduled to shut down later in April). Saturday Night Live was in progress, with no crawl running, and they (or WMFP) pulled the plug at 12:01. No slide directing viewers to rescan - just nothing. The virtual channel is there - with no video and or audio. Appropriate for April Fools Day...

Akin to Flatley pulling the plug on WNHT-TV (Channel 21) in Concord, NH on April 1st.....The staff got a "memo" that afternoon, saying the station would "go dark" at midnight...
As it was April 1....everyone thought: "It's just a joke......"
Ummmm....Nope! The Pat Sajak Show was at mid-break --- a brief local crawl, announcing "Bye-Bye".....then SOLID BLACK for nearly SIX HOURS (I had my set on during this fiasco!!).
No slide...nada....just the carrier (black=100% power).....
No one remembered (or most likely CARED....!) to turn the transmitter off.....
When they said they'd "go dark".....THEY MEANT IT!!

Then there was WHRC ch 46, the original licensee for WWDP, which WMFP's remains will soon be sharing on. Back in the late 80's, WHRC had moved their transmitter to a location where AC power was not immediately available, and they were running the power guzzling transmitter from a diesel generator. That worked OK, until they neglected to pay the diesel fuel supplier - and the tank ran dry in the middle of an afternoon in 1989... Ch 46 did not reappear for several years.

Some of the Saturday Night Live viewers last night probably ended up on the "real" NBC 10 - WJAR.

WMFP also pulled the plug on Comet and Charge! last night. Only SonLife remains - which is all that is likely to be sharing on WWDP. Comet is still carried as a subchannel of WJAR (10-3).

And it remains to be seen how the reception on WWDP will be when channel sharing starts. Also, I expect WYDN to go off soon and channel share.

Actually, they are still there, in WWJE:50-27 fashion—PSIP data for a couple of seconds, then “No Signal”...though the signal meter shows a full signal.
But it isnʼt just WBTS:60.5—WMFP:62.3 and WMFP:62.4 (all RF-18) are also “hidden” as “No Signal”, with the first couple of seconds with their respective PSIP data!
The only channel decoding “normally” is WMFP:62.1, airing (which I believe is leased) Swaggartʼs Bible thumping pablum.
