Rick Dees on KIIS

I saw the movie "Best Defense" from the mid-1980s. Dudley Moore's character was listening to KIIS on the radio. Rick Dees was on. I know him mainly from "Solid Gold", but I'd like to hear more of his nonsense.

Just Google "Rick Dees air checks" and you'll find a few. There's probably also a ton of stuff on You Tube. You may know, he was also the ...uh...performer of the song "Disco Duck."

Robert W. Morgan was so much better on Solid Gold than Rick could ever be. When I think of it Rick Dees was always terrible on TV. The Law suits filed against him were very costly. He lost Millions alone for swindiling his partners on the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40. Liz Fulton, his News sidekick sued him for her 'retirement' and won. You can view his nonsense here, she won because of this episode

In the 1981 film "Modern Romance" Albert Brooks gets in his car and turns on KIIS-FM. This was pre-Dees so the dj heard is Lon Thomas, who was doing morning drive at the time.

Does anyone have a copy of the audio where Dees "loses it" because somebody moved his tapes? It was real Caine Mutiny type display. I guess he is/was a real piece of work back in the day. Lots of stories about temper tantrums.

I personally witnessed Dees losing it when Shotgun Tom was there filming all his great KIIS Video stuff. Rick Dees was like working with Napolean

Any audio or video would be much appreciated. I believe rants, particularly loud off the cuff-ones are funny! There are several examples of sports coaches getting into it, but on the music side, Casey Kasem's "Snuggles" clip remains the king. I have watched it dozens of times and it is still LOL funny. Mrs. CF says there is nothing funny about rants and that there is something wrong with me for thinking there is. She doesn't get it.

I thought Shotgun was not allowed to film Rick Dees at KIIS? He just happened to be there when Rick lost it but didn't have tape rolling at the time?

Yes - I remember that from way back - nice little plug for KIIS in that film, almost like product placement. IIRC, the jock gives the TOH ID: "KIIS-FM is K-I-I-S-FM, Los Angeles..."

Dees' "snuggles" melt down is on YouTube and it is hilarious. I heard the Dees meltdown a few years ago but I don't remember where. He must employ folks to "clean" his internet footprint of any embarrassing stuff. I wonder how much that must cost a year? Well if anyone can find pleas post a link here and let me know.

Enjoy it one more time!

I did. Thanks. It never gets old.

I also like the cuts of him recording the promos. Some are hilarious.

"Hey, what the <bleep> am I doing? Promos inside the <bleep>ing game??" (After having to read a promo to run during the Portland Trailblazers game).

"Hi, this is Casey Kasem. American Top Forty has moved to a new time. I hope you'll join me this Saturday morning and every Saturday morning at two. Two??!!"

As I said there are lots of 'em on the sports side, usually coaches and managers. Jim Healy featured them on his broadcasts regularly, and of course it was he (and jr. field reporter Paul Olden) who got the sports King of them All, the Tommy Lasorda talkin' about Dave Kingman rant. The rant is easily found on youtube, but most youtube versions are uncensored. Of course Healy had to bleep all of the swear words for airing and I still believe the bleeped censored version is actually funnier than the uncensored one. BTW, Lasorda has the second best sports rant about Kurt Bevaqua. Here is a link to all of Lasorda's best rants. Warning:it is all uncensored, and definitely NSFW. Click with appropriate caution.

Last note, if you like college and particularly PAC 12 football like me, good news: former NY Jets coach Herm Edwards, who is remembered more for his "You play to win the game" rant than any coaching job he ever did, has been hired by Arizona State. I am looking forward to more memorable press conference rants after the inevitable losses in the tough-to-coach-in PAC 12. Here he is in all of his glory: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W42iiCcFbxE
