Take 5 is on the air!

We keep hearing about budget cuts and hiring cheaper on air talent, but Tegna owned KING 5 is starting another locally produced show. Take 5, with Chris Cashman, Angela Russell, Michelle Li, and Jordan Steele, starts Monday the 16th. This is the third local program that airs on a daily basis on KING, joining New Day, with Margaret Larsen, and Evening, with Jim Dever, Saint Bryan, Kim Holcomb and Michael King. These shows, with their on-air talent, must be expensive to produce. Does Tegna do this in their other markets? Local Seattle TV must be doing okay if they can afford to keep these shows on the air. I don't see this much locally produced programming on Cox owned KIRO, Sinclair owned KOMO, or Tribune owned KCPQ.

KOMO produces Seattle Refined which airs weekdays. However, KIRO and KCPQ don't produce anything other than news as far as I can tell.

I'm going to give it some time to settle ... but I like the concept of "zigging" while everyone else is "zagging". By the time KING joined the fray, already enough saturation in the 4p news product. So the idea of covering some stories in-depth, and/or doing lighter features on the community is appealing in that time slot, and provides a creative transition between talk shows early afternoon and standard news in 5p block+. First show was encouraging, though.

The New Day brand is pretty standard for TEGNA stations in larger markets. Keep in mind, buying acquired or syndicated shows for late morning or midday slot is many times much more expensive than hiring some talent and sticking them on a kitchen set next to your morning news set. That, and the inventory within the locally-produced show is all TEGNA's or the station's to sell. Many times they will embed what amounts to an infomercial, so the entire show is talking about heart disease and how: you can prevent it with Doctor Soandso from Renton Cardiovascular Clinics.. (sponsor).

As an example; depending on the market size, I believe Steve Harvey's show runs about $60,000 a week for a five year contract.

Have not had a chance to catch this either live or online. What is the studio location? Same ground floor location as the main news operation? Or have they ventured upstairs? The upstairs was built with camera/studio facilities, but not sure if they are still being utilized. ???

Hmm. Lobby? I guess I will need to see that to believe it.

See if they stream the show....and you'll get why that fits the "feel" of the show. Very informal, upbeat topics, etc. Very much like a "Today" show except even more relaxed ... even more so than New Day. At the same time ... some break-in stuff that NEEDS to be resolved (which is why I want to give it time to "settle") -- but begging people to text every 3 minutes and talking all over each other needs to be reined in. Topic choices, format, etc. are on the right track.

Thanks LBB, I indeed caught the 4 o’clock show today and I do understand the lobby background now that I have seen how they are using it. The content seems a bit forced but like you I think they will need to find their way. I have nothing against positive stories but they probably should back off a bit and offer a mix of current news with these positive stories.

I like how at the end of the show they catch up with Mark Wright or whoever might be anchoring the 5pm newscast in the lobby, for a summary of what's coming up before they head to the main news studio.
