Charleston, SC 1980s

In my hometown, Charleston, South Carolina, the cable system has remained mostly the same over the last 40 years. Storer Cable built the system here in the mid to late 1970s, but it was bought out by Comcast in 1994. When the system started, the fee was $5.75 a month, with $7.50 installation fee.

The first lineup I could find was from September 1981. This lineup is from the Evening Post newspaper.

- WCBD (ABC) (still there today)
- Government/community channel
- Weather radar/NWS audio
- Home Theatre Network
- AP News (national, regional, state news)
- WCIV (NBC) (still there today)
- WCSC (CBS) (still there today)
- CNN (still there today)
- WITV (PBS) (still there today)
- WTBS (still there today)
- CBN (Christian Broadcasting Network)
(A)- The Movie Channel
(C)- USA/C-SPAN/The English Channel/Calliope (kids)/BET (these channels split time, USA still there today)
(D)- HBO (still there today)
(E)- PTL (religion)
(F)- Business and stock quotes
(G)- ESPN
(H)- Showtime
(K)- WGN (Chicago)
(L)- WOR (New York)
(M)- Nickelodeon (still there today)
(P)- SPN (Satellite Programming Network)

That's awesome! How did you navigate to the G section of the Yearbook? I can only get to F on the American Radio History site.

You have to use the search function and select 1980 and put in the station or city needed, and results from the G section will show up
