Has anybody heard of WKNY?

Has anybody heard of WKNY, it is a Cumulus station on 1490 AM in Kingston, NY and they're still playing AC, just like the three Lite-FM's. I looked up on the last Arbitrons from Fall that WKNY had no listeners becuase of the Lite-FM's is still doing. The station has a terrible signal. When you get into Poughkeepsie on a car, the station would fade out. That is still a low rated station. They got Warren Lawrence doing the afternoons Monday-Fridays playing AC as well as on weekends where he plays oldies for a couple of hours just like the way WBPM is doing at 92.9 is still playing right now, they also have the Sunday Garage Sale and some speciality shows and loads of AC music from Jones Satellite. Former WBPM's "Cool 94.3" jock Nick Robbins also do mornings on WKNY as well as generic top of the hour CBS Radio News programming. By the way, they don't have a website for WKNY and there was no Yankees on that station. "The Wolf" is still programming the Yankees broadcast from WCBS-AM on 94.3 only but 97.3 is still playing country. I don't see the Yankees are coming back to WKNY anytime soon. They stopped programming it in 2003 and they don't have any Yankees broadcast at all on AM except "The Wolf". WKNY is the worst station that Cumulus could give. Cumulus has "Mix 97.7" as well as WRRV, WPDH, "The Wolf" at 94.3/97.3 and who could never forget WKNY. Those three station is at Pendell Rd. and one station is on Broadway. Come on. I don't see why WKNY isn't listed in the Arbitrons. Maybe, you'll decide.

I'm not sure what you wrote there, Diz but I'll try to make some sense of it.

WKNY is a Kingston station. 1490 is not and never was a Poughkeepsie station. It used to have its studios in uptown Kingston as did 92 WGHQ/94.3 WBPM. (I visited the area a few weeks ago and saw that WGHQ is still located at 82 John Street and still has the same signage hanging by the door that was there when I worked there.)

If the Cloud people have moved WKNY to Pendell Road, that was a big mistake.

WKNY is a dinky little AM station that wouldn't do any better if it was located on Pendell Road. If anything the people working at WKNY probably have more job security by being in Kingston and aren't under the 'Cumulus' cloud.

Yes, the one with the sign that says "NBC Radio" on it. WGHQ used to carried the NBC Radio News at the top of the hour, but not anymore.

There's an aircheck of them from 1972 on my website. They are a very local station, that's all. Yes, thery sitill play music.

In the 1970's, WBPM was at 94.3. Co-owned by WGHQ, automated Top 40. they were absolutley the best and tightest automated Top 40 station I ever heard. No dead air, great jingles, amazing for a 1970's automation system.

WKNY is certainly old school AM radio. They ,despite not showing up in the ratings have done the AC music , news on the hour ,and other specialty shows ,that are no longer done much elsewhere for many years .They even have some local news and seem totally independent of the other Cumulus stations . It’s like Cumulus doesn’t even know they own it. This is not necessarily bad, if you like radio the way it used to be. As far as ratings are concerned the only Hudson Valley AM stations that show up at all are the ones playing standards , because fans of that music have no place else to turn . As to the signal they are average for a station licensed as local , which is why I hate to hear people suggest oldies be relegated to AM . Because Especially at night their signal goes nowhere.

Remind me to tell you how all that was done, Rick. The automation system was one of two such systems in the world...created by Henry Ellenbogen. Dick Hyatt was the PD (and CE!) and the sucker cooked. I know, because I started my career there in 1979.

I knew Henry, he was CE of WHUC as well in the mid seventies. Very talented guy. I always thought he modified a Schafer system, but I never saw it, so didn't know.

I moved to the Kingston area in the early '70's to work for a large computer manufacturer. I found this AM station at 1490 with a strong signal, and music I enjoyed. Through all these years, WKNY continues to be my favorite source of news and music. It announces school closings (once quite important), live interviews with local bigwigs (where you can call in and air your own opinion), ethnic programming, garage sales, and even a Doo Wop hour. I can always tell when a thunderstorm is approaching! Warren Lawrence, who hosts the Doo Wop, was at WKNY when I moved here, and must be station general manager, in fact, if not by title.
In closing, WKNY is a well run, highly regarded local AM station, which plays comfortable music, and gives plenty of information. I hope their next 35 years are as good as the past.

Boy was I wrong on this one...I guess that nasty Cumulus cloud can reach all the way to Kingston. Good luck Nick Robbins! Man, you'd think Benfer would have bigger fish to fry.

WKNY was Iconic Station

WKNY was my 1st ever commercial radio station I worked at fresh out of school in 1988. Worked there for a few months until I was hired at WBPM/WGHQ full time. I absolutely LOVED working there with Ward Todd and Dick Hyatt. Those were very impressionable years of my career and have some of my experience that I've learned over the years owed to those two guys. It was the people who worked there that made that station great, NOT the corporate sterile company that owns it. WKNY will continue to be the station that pioneered my radio career and I am forever grateful for it.

Actually Townsquare Media sold 1490 WKNY, Kingston to Local independent, non-profit Radio Kingston Corp. late last year. They are still in the same location , for now but will be moving to a new location in Kingston. They have a construction permit for a FM translator on 107.9.

The format is a variety "hyper local" programing. They have a late morning Spanish program, but for now they still play lots of Oldies.
Warren Lawrence is still there, the last one from the old days.

WKNY's FM simulcast at 107.9 started up this week. The FM signal is clearer than AM 1490 ever was. As I noted in another post, it's the end of an era. I no longer have need for an AM receiver.

The Hyde Park- Poughkeepsie area is outside the translators service area. 107.9 comes in choppy in spots, and fairly clear in others.
Normally, I cannot receive 1490 WKNY during critical times and overnight. But right now in Hyde Park I am not picking them up at all. Are they operating 1490 on reduced power while completing work on the new tower.

From WKNY last week: " Work on new tower and FM antenna is almost complete; we should have our FM signal
up next week and be at full power AM shortly after that. "

Did you mean WKNY is not at full power now? How many watts will the translator be on 107.9 FM when they are at full power?

The translator is 250 watts, the max for translators. So it's unlikely it will reach Poughkeepsie or Hyde Park. It is not on reduced power.

But apparently the AM was on reduced power while the tower was being fitted for the translator. Not sure if it's back to normal power.
