Buffalo has a new Oldies station

Buddy says he will buy a "Major Market FM Station". What is that? Buffalo isn't a major market.

Wrong. Buffalo is a Top 100 market, and the "major markets" are frequently considered to be the Top 100.

The PPM markets are all called "major markets" and are the Top 50 markets (minus two). Buffalo is market #58, and is 44th in radio revenue. That's not major?

Some will like it, while others will be repelled by it. Others won't be aware the station exists.

So? You can say the same thing about every station in America... every station in the world!

Let's say WECK gets the 5 share. 99 percent of its listeners will still be over 55. The challenge is the same of selling to clients who want to target those demos.

78% of market revenue is local. It's not driven by ratings and demos as much as sales results and station reputations. Stations outside the top 20 to 25 markets can do quite well with older demos if the client base is also mostly older business people.

I only wish that there were more local owners willing to provide service to listeners outside the "conventional" demographics and the sales abilities to make it work.

Last week I had lunch with a friend who has bought two local AMs and added translators to each; he is targeting 55+ on each, with local formats and good local sellers. So there is hope, both for some AMs with translators and smaller signal FMs.n

Oldies 104 rebranded as Classic Hits long ago. Their playlist today includes very little 60s music. Somebody decided that "Oldies" are no longer lucrative...

That doesn't mean that "Oldies" can't be lucrative for a small owner who doesn't answer to stockholders or have excessive debt to service. Finding and serving a niche market is a time honored way to earn a fine living - whether it's special programming for a small market or targeting an underserved audience in a major market.

It's what I have witnessed. I stand by my statement, your personal assessment not withstanding, nor having any bearing on the fact.

For the record, if WECK was on the WHTT signal, I would make more money than they do. WECK has signal deficiencies. That is the only reason the station is not a top 5. WHTT has one full time person on air. That's pathetic. My local payroll is higher than theirs. They should be ashamed. The do have some great legends on the weekend like Brian J Walker and Tony Venterolli. Both are great Buffalo broadcasters, but it's pretty sad with a station of that power, they have just one live person on air reading liners in the morning. Their power ratio, meaning the amount they should be billing compared to their ratings is also pathetic. WHTT should be billing ALOT more with their ratings. They have very great ratings. My WECK power ratio is thru the roof because of our ratings vs revenue. WECK is upper 2 shares most books and our billing is now a 5th of what WHTT is. Probably about a third of what WBUF is, and MORE than WLKK is. Let these companies keep eating up their people, automating and cost-cutting. WECK is heading in the right direction, but from a ratings and revenue standpoint, plus it is LOCAL. I am very proud of what my team has accomplished in just 13 months. Eventually in buffalo radio, all roads will lead to Radio One Buffalo, LLC
 
Kudos to all who are keeping this type format going, you are all lucky up there to have a place for this music, in Philly the AM dial is full of drek and the FM is not much better if you want Classic or just plain Oldies. Where does a 67 year old top 40 dude growing up remembering 50's and 60's music go nowadays besides the internet, enjoy it while you can.

I know nothing about you - and it's none of my business or much of my interest - but if you haven't been in Sales, you missed your calling. Wow. That is a shyster sales pitch if I ever heard one.

And, I suppose, if you know everything - which is certainly how you present yourself - and find virtually no interest in anything critical said by others, then... well... we've seen many times to where that leads. The now-mellowing and evolving geezer radio incarnation of WECK is hardly on the tip of everyone's tongues. And those that may fall into that category - those waiting for meals-on-wheels in their extreme first-ring suburb housing supported by an eroded social security fixed income yelling get-off-my-lawn at the now generation - the clock is ticking for their visit to Elderwood or Amigone. In the meantime, they're hoping to hear what the latest sale is at the Boulevard Mall Acme... which to them is "cool" too. In other words, you are playing to a diminishing and out-of-touch audience with a has-been medium and passed-by staff... an approach that is economically unsustainable.

Yeah. I don't know how much fun is involved. On this very message board I've already offered my thoughts about improvements. You, along with others here, apparently didn't see fit to acknowledge them. Of course, the self-proclaimed "I-know-everything-already" crowd (or individual, as the case may be) certainly couldn't conceive that other's thought could ever warrant consideration. How many times have you pulled up to a light and heard anyone blasting content from WECK? lol.

Anyhow... First, were I ever to be the owner of WECK, it would have been a free & clear outright gift from someone that knows the underlying value of dirt. I would never invest in a troubled/dying outdated industry (fitting that it abuts a cemetery, no?) and/or a specific entity that shows absolutely no long term financial sustainability. So, were I to have been gifted all of WECK, I'd capitalize on the asset. It'd be worth far more as things other than an AM radio station (with or without these translators)... especially from a Net Revenue aspect. Ask the Gajewski's next door.

Make the station a success? Define "success." To hear one poster here (that apparently knows anything and everything that even remotely has to do with radio), the station is already a sweeping blazing unprecedented success. In fact, it is so much of a success that it leaves all other radio stations in the Buffalo area in it's 'success dust' so-to-speak. I disagree. Once I get your definition of success, I'll revisit my response, if you'd like.

My advice? Make the asset return as much as possible in all manners - economic, satisfaction, social, etc. - trouble presently is that to do so, one would have to have outright ownership - full equity.

Have a great day - for the WECK listeners reading this... turn your hearing aids up and get a fresh Depends, because meals-on-wheels is almost there and a Mama's Family rerun is about to start.

lol Probably so. Of course, some owners/CEOs/Presidents can't see the forest for the trees. Some live in the past ('cuz that's all they know). What was it that the CEO of Toy R Us stated a week prior to banko/liquidation?... oh yeah, "Our brick and mortar business model will prevail. We are poised to continue serving our customers for years to come." He probably knew more about his business than did I... so I guess I was wrong in April 2017 when I said that TRU would fail wiothin 12 months. Again, lol.

WECK sounds A LOT like the Oldies 104 of 20 years ago. That audience is still around for the most part, and I'll bet (without any data to back it up) there's a younger shadow demo as well. That was always the case "back in the day."

My response: You are a liar. I have never had any dealings with you.

You seem mean and hateful by your colorful posts. That's my impression at any rate. I trust I am only seeing one small side of you in your posts here. I also perceive you as intelligent from your writings. I might bristle at the words but admire the talent you have of the written word.

I still did not see a plan if it was your station. I must assume you haven't a clue.

If it was mine, I'd likely try for a LMA versus a format. My fear would be if I could achieve any decent level of success a frequency owner with a better signal might be hungry enough to give it a try. So, I wouldn't try what the owner of WECK is trying. The AM I manage makes decent profit most years, mostly in the 30-35% range. That's as a stand alone daytimer. Granted a bad year might eat half a year's profit but so far I've been lucky enough to turn a profit about 90% of the years through hurricanes and even a direct lightning strike that fried everything.

Success? Success means making ends meet, paying the bills, turning some profit. That is success. So, I suppose the answer I was thinking is how do you make money with it? And, no, I'm not talking selling the tower site and renting the office space.

But such cases are relatively rare. Don't attempt to make the exception into your perception of the norm.
