iHeart Orlando to take over AM 810 WRSO

They are putting a major push on this station, hiring good talk hosts from Puerto Rico. With Orlando likely to hit 40% Hispanic this year, there is a real market for the station and format... just look at WRUM

WRUM has the numbers it has because they have no full market signal competitor. I think it's only a matter of time before Cox decides to go all-in on Hispanic in that market and tries to get some of that 10-13 shares WRUM is gobbling up.

WNUE isn't really a competitor. It's pretty much an inventory dump for Entravision's Univision Affiliate TV Station, and they run a skeleton staff there. Not to mention it is a rimshot with dismal coverage in South Orlando and Kissimmee, a huge Hispanic Population area.

As for that "Major Push" on 810/97.9, I hear they are already selling brokered time, so I don't know about them being dedicated to bringing a top notch Spanish News/Talk format to the market. The other day when the Brett Kavanaugh Confirmation hearings started I heard one of the hosts saying that Kavanaugh was already confirmed. At first I thought I may have heard it wrong, but no, he said it multiple times.

WRUM has the numbers it has because it's a very good radio station. It has a good dose of Puerto Rico's KQ-105 with enough localization to make it work. Raymond Torres is a veteran and experienced PD, and he makes the format work. He is backed by pros like Enrique Santos and Pedro Javier González, the heads of the iHeart Hispanic programming division.

Cox has no Spanish language experience. They have had issues in Miami in the past due to failures to understand the Hispanic audience. And for a company rumored to be considering leaving radio altogether, going into unexplored and unfamiliar territory is not going to get corporate's apoproval.

No one is saying that WRUM isn't a good radio station, nor is anyone saying anything about their staff. They do a really great job and the station sounds solid. However, you of all people know that it has no full market signal competition. Last time they did, they were splitting those shares with their competitor. If you're the only big stick in town, you're going to have larger numbers by default because listeners can't pick up any other stations in every nook and cranny of the market like WRUM.

Cox is currently running Spanish Solo Exitos on their 107.3 translator in Orlando, so you can't say they have zero experience.

Having heard it, I'd still say they have zero experience.

For example, in Puerto Rico, the term "éxitos" has never been applied broadly to music. It's "hit" or "hits". Were the folks at 107.3 to understand the predominantly (if not overwhelmingly) Puerto Rican audience, they might understand that the term they are using might be great for a Mexican or Central American station, but not for one aimed at Boricuas.

Well it's no rock on 102.5 but wish these guys luck. :) I have already switched over to 540 AM for Gators games. It is interesting because 93.1 has been coming in slightly better on the EP as of late. Has even showed up on the srf59 sometimes.

OK as of the time I'm writing this 102.5 is calling themselves the cool oldies channel and is playing 50's, 60's
& 70's music. The legal ID said WPOZ HD4 & W273CA. Is this a stunt? Or have we been deceived and Orlando now has an upper demographic station.

Man if this was the new format I'd be glued to this channel. I really wished someone would do legit oldies here again. I wished WVLG came in here better. But more likely we are in for la Z as the press release mentioned. I just subscribed to premium again myself. Really like the scoops this site gets. Anyway I will enjoy this music while I can on FM. :)

Perhaps I'm getting a little too obsessed with this, but I couldn't help but notice. I heard the legal id again of the cool oldies channel. They're saying WPOZ HD-4 Orlando & W273CA Orlando. They're other 2 HD stations WMYZ & WHYZ are not mentioned (OK so maybe those 2 are not carrying it, fair enough). I pulled up the stream of 103.7 the rock and the legal ID called for all three (WPOZ, WMYZ & WHYZ) as HD-4's. Correct me if I'm wrong, how can there be 2 WPOZ-HD4's? Somethings' not right in Altamonte Springs.

I think they just have to update their Legal ID Sweepers to "The Rock", because this "Cool Oldies" may have been an on-the-spot decision. On their website, it lists "The Rock" as "WMYZ & WHYZ ONLY".

I love this new "Cool Oldies" station! I hope this is not just a temporary format.

I guess this format's going to stick around for a while. That's good. If marketed right, a listener supported oldies station could work out Ok here. I only wish I didn't have such a messed up work schedule. I would love to do an air shift there every now and then. Even if it's volunteer.

If the YouTube air check is any indication.....it sure sounds like a winner!!!
I'm gonna take a wild guess here .....and say they're either sharing a studio/transmitter site....or they're sending audio via STL....
IF they're using AoIP....it's the FIRST station I've heard that actually sounds GOOD using it!!!
Kudos to WPOZ!! Hope HD4 is a HUGE SUCCESS!!:)

so... after a day of stunting it looks like there’s a new format on 102.5. After the 3:00 ID there was an announcement in Spanish and they launched “Musica Para Tu Vida.”

One can only guess that WPOZ just launched a Spanish Christian format.

That frees up a pre-set in the car.

So it was a stunt after all. Well played, had me fooled, especially with the sweepers and the YouTube video posted from someone who works there. But this was something I would have expected from one of the other radio monolopys in town, not from a Christian broadcast company. Lord knows I'm no Angel, but shame on them for deceiving listeners by bringing back a format that's not been heard in this town for years only to pull the plug 2 days later. They couldn't just run 88.3's HD1 channel as filler and kept the rock station on the HD4 till the format was ready? Nobody would have cared, they could have just slipped into what they're playing now and this thread would have been done and over with last week. They were calling themselves Orlando's cool oldies channel, what they just didn't was NOT cool. I'm just glad I don't support them. Now back to Sirius.

Sorry for the ruffled feathers, not my intent. I needed a placeholder format for a couple of days and as a Cool 105.9 alum (Johnny Angel), wanted to bring back a personally much loved and missed format, if even for just a couple of days. I was also hoping that a Market Manager or GM at one of the big clusters might stumble across it. Certainly there has got to be an underperforming AM, AM/translator or HD/translator that could benefit from bringing back a much loved format. I know that I would listen.

BTW, what you were listening to was my former Internet oldies station. In 2016 when the SoundExchange royalty rates for small micro-casters doubled I had no choice but shut it down.

Thank you, I appreciate your reply and explanation. It is unfortunate that non of the monolopys here are willing to take the chance and try oldies out. Even it's part time. They can't seem to or know how to sell to the upper demographic. Even one of the stand alone AM's here should try, but it's easier and cheaper to run what they're running to keep the lights on (even it the only light is the computer screen) and the transmitter humming. Perhaps a strategically marketed listener supported oldies station could be the only thing that would work nowadays. But until that happens, for all of us who like the older stuff the alternatives are one of the music streaming services or satellite radio.

For oldies to work, you have to have a big enough audience to either rank well in ratings or to create traffic for local accounts.

As to advertisers, mostly via agencies, that use ratings, it's just about impossible that oldies on any facility, AM or FM, can get enough listening in the age groups that those agencies have been ordered to buy by their clients. Oldies is pretty much a 60+ format, and even with local accounts there is nearly no money going against those demos.

And for local accounts, the current retail environment does not favor use of radio to reach older seniors. Unless an advertiser sees results, they don't renew. And if the format is on a limited signal or an AM, it won't get the audience needed to create results. And Orlando has very few good AM signals, and really none of those would do that format.

And a better FM signal won't do a format that has no agency appeal.

So it's not about "learning to sell" older demos. If there are not enough advertisers that want to reach older demos, the proposition won't work.

Well, farts. I heard the loop of "La Bamba" this afternoon, then the Spanish version of the Cool Oldies liner, & I was like "Noooo! Don't stunt again!"
For the record, I'm 37 & I would of had Cool Oldies 102.5FM on 1 of the 6 presets in my car...and I probably would of asked the people at Z to bring back & air my "DJ Mo Oldies Show" that I did when I was on 790AM a few years ago...
