Paul Simon on SNL tonight

Performance art? Something very alternative? I don't know, I didn't get it. Perhaps someone can explain it to me. Overall, not impressed with SNL this new season. Even weekend update seems to be uneven. They seem to have lost their edge, but just my opinion. Perhaps I'm not in the majority here...but wow, I'm unimpressed compared to recent seasons.
EDIT: Simon's 2nd song was a new version of "Bridge", and it was quite good. The show overall was less than my expectations, however.

let me guess, you think they lost their edge due to leaning too left in politics. i bet you are a Trump supporter.

They seem to have lost their edge, but just my opinion.

If all of their guests were from the 70s, I might agree. Typically, their hosts and musical guests are a lot more current, thus a lot edgier.

This show was an exception, probably because Lorne is such good friends with Paul & his wife.

Apparently that was Simon's farewell performance on the show. He has been doing a farewell tour all year. So one last stop at a show he appeared on 9 times. I'm willing to give him a break, regardless of what he did. Here's an article about it:

I did give him a break, I thought his rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was excellent. The entire show rates a C+ however. The comedy was mildly amusing, and "Update" was hit and miss. I get the feeling that A. Baldwin is tiring of his role as President Trump. This is only three shows into the season, so I am willing to see future episodes.

His ex-partner Art Garfunkel has apparently quit speaking to him, and the police have responded to several domestic calls to his home involving he and wife Edie Brickell. In real life it appears that Rhymin' Paul Simon isn't a very good guy.

Not a fan.

That could be true. But separating the art from the artist, Simon is a true pioneer who has re-invented himself numerous times, always to critical and financial success. One word - Graceland (the Paul Simon album, not the Elvis mansion). Amazing music...

Nothing against Garfunkel - he has a great tenor voice, but he has't done much post S&G, except for a brief career as an actor in the late 70's, and appearances in S&G concert reunions over the years. I haven't followed the gossip, but I wouldn't automatically make Simon the villain - either for his bad relationship with Garfunkel, or his marriage problems

I enjoyed a lot of the comedy, mostly the political comedy. Not all of it, though. There was some weird stuff I just didn't get. I was nice to see Seth back.

I like Paul's hit music, but what in the world was that? I just couldn't enjoy it. Even the new version of "Bridge". I don't think you can improve on the original.

This aired live everywhere. When do people in the West see what aired during prime time on NBC, including a classic episode? I wish if the objective was to air a classic episode with Paul they could have found another one. The episode with George Harrison already aired during prime time. How many others were there? What about the one where the senator and Paul argued over who was hosting?

Yes, and I really like the primetime airing of the show in the west.

Paul Simon is an icon. His music, going way back, is beyond reproach. I do not like it when they feel they can get so "weird" based on their past success. The first song on SNL this past Saturday was hopelessly alternative to the point that few understood it. OK, it was about Chernobyl. Why anyone really cares about that 30+ years later is beyond me. As I posted earlier, I liked his new rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water". Perhaps that was what he needed last night, as I guess he is retiring from music. Which also seems a little unbelievable.
