AM Frequency of the week: 730

Far northwestern Chicago suburbs.....

Days: All splatter from WGN (720). Even with their iboc mercifully gone.

Nights: More splatter, but with WGN nulled or off. CKDM (Dauphin, Manitoba) is most likely to surface. Not exactly a sure thing, however. I've also heard CKAC (Montreal) and XEX (Mexico City). XEX historically has been the more common of the two, but I'm pretty sure XEX has reduced power. Now both of them are quite rare.

Other Location: On my (mostly business) travels to Wisconsin and Minnesota, CKDM basically owns the channel at night at most locations.
 
In the near north Chicago suburbs: nothing during the day, but WGN splatter. At night I hear CKDM and sometimes CKAC from time to time. Years ago I heard XEX most often, but not lately. Like Cyberdad, I suspect XEX has reduced power.
 
East Tennessee: Days WLIL, Lenoir City, TN. Night: Not all that much but I've pulled in KQPN in West Memphis AR.

Retro/other: Throughout much of Ohio and the northern 2/3 of Indiana, there's "all Jimmy all the Time" eminating from Jimmy Swaggart's WJYM. What a daytime signal and night doesn't do that bad. The "bowling pin pattern sends a lot of their 1000 watts straight south but it makes it from south of Indianapolis to around Columbus east to west.....it gets just north of Cincinnati. WJYM started life as WMGS, "King Country 73", which I remember my Dad listening to.
 
By Day: A weak KYYA Billings MT after sunrise, if anything

By Night: CKDM Dauphin, Manitoba. It's in almost every day right before sunset and sometimes after dark. Right before to right after sunset, CKDM can absolutely bomb in here sometimes and just crush it.

My listening location is Laramie, WY
 
Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: WGN splatter
Nightime: usually CKDM or CKAC in WGN splatter

DX/RETRO: with WGN just 5 miles away DX is usually tough on this frequency. Besides the two Canadians allready mentioned, XEX was a regular, but not as common as before. Other logs include KWRE (Warrenton, MO), KWOA (Worthington, MN), WFMW (Madisonville, KY), WJMT (Merrill, WI), WLIL (Lenoir City, TN), WDKT (Madison, AL). Third Canadian logged on this frequency was CJNR (Blind River, ON) back in 1985. Also heard TIHB, San Jose Costa Rica in 1986.
 
Around Columbus, Ohio ...
- Daytime: Not much of anything, other than a weak WJYM out of Bowling Green. They throw almost all of their power to the south-southwest, basically straight at Lima and Dayton, and it shows. Comes in much better north of Columbus than in town.
It throws a lot of splatter onto WGN across western Ohio. Conversely, they are so directional that in parts of Toledo, WJYM is barely there at all.
- Nighttime: Can't remember any signal standing out. Most of what I have heard there is slop either from WGN or CFZM.
 
West Houston, as over in Orange County TX, it's KTRH splatter during the day and XEX at night. At sunset, I have heard Korean language programming, presumably KKDA from the DFW area.

Back in the 70's in Tulsa, if I got far enough away from KRMG-740's tower, I could hear KKDA, the excellent "Soul 73". In those days, XEX was strong enough that I could hear it adjacent to local KRMG.

KKDA is one of my "wants" however their signal only goes south as far as ~San Augustine at night and too far west days along with KTRH splatter. Right now I'm running barefoot with a 909X since Hurricane Harvey took down my ham and long wires. Finally got my 2m omni ant. back up, long wires and others next but don't know when.
 
In NW San Antonio, daytime is just splatter from local 720 KSAH.

At sunset, XEX comes up with a pretty good signal. I can usually hear XEHB "La Mexicana" in Hidalgo de Parral underneath when aiming SW. Occasionally, KKDA will mix in briefly.

At night XEX is strong. Oriented NW I can often hear XESOS in Auga Prieta underneath and occasionally over it when XEX fades briefly. I hear XEHB much less often.

By the way, XEX "W Deportes" sure seems to air more English-language classic/alternative rock at night than sports.
 
Chatham, IL (10 miles SW of Springfield) daytime:

Fair to poor KWRE Warrenton, MO (obviously better on car radios) with their stick only 96 miles SW (as the crow flies), plus traces of WGN slop
 
Days...Absolutely nothing!!! ( winter or not!! )

Nights..A mixture of CHMJ Vancouver ( 24hr all-time traffic ) and KNFL Boise. Both are are very hard to hear because of heavy splatter from KCBS, all news 740 ( local )
 
730 here is local WLTQ with a Catholic (EWTN) format. They have a huge daytime signal which can be heard through most of the southeast coast. I’ve personally picked it up south of Fort Pierce, FL on a Carnival cruise ship and in Freeport, Bahamas.

One time during one of the hurricanes (might have been Matthew) they were knocked off air and Charlotte’s 730 (ESPN WZGV) came in in its place.

They went off the air a few years ago for several months in between formats (they were liberal talk for a while, then Spanish), and 730 from West Memphis, AR (then KQPN) would come in at night.
 
730 Daytime - KULE Ephrata WA (Spanish)
Nights - CHMJ Vancouver (Traffic), CKDM Dauphin MB (Country), lately KDBI Boise (Regional Mexican) leaving day power on all night for weeks. One time auroral log of XEX Mexico City (W Deportes), in September 2017.

Sunrise/sunset - CHMJ, KDBI, KSVN Ogden UT (Ke Padre, Regional Mexican), KEZX Medford OR (Fox Sports). Once or twice have heard KYYA Billings MT (News/Talk).

Wanted
CKAC Montreal (French Traffic). I've heard English all-traffic, now it's time to find French traffic information!
KLOE Goodland KS (News/Talk) - Seems quite impossible, but maybe on a spectacular sunrise with 1000 watts. It's a little over 1050 miles from here.

Interesting note re: XESOS...I confirmed their 97.3 FM on Eskip back in July. Parallel programming. Also have 98.5 from Agua Prieta in the logs.

Last time I drove through there on I-70 (two years ago), KLOE was running a local weekly oldies program on Saturday morning/ So if you hear oldies some Saturday, maybe you've snagged it, The 1kw day signal on 730 is impressive to put it mildly. 250 miles of tripping the scan button...from just a killowatt! Plus...the terrain is so flat and empty there, you can see the stick from at least ten miles away.

In far south KC, I occasionally receive this station during late morning critical hours at a distance of 378 miles. During the day, I receive a very weak KWRE in Warrenton, MO. At night, I have yet to log a listenable signal except XEX before they lowered their power. Reportedly, now at 60kW.

Bob... Where you are, it should be easy enough to null both KLOE and KWRE, and see if you can snag KWOA from Worthington, MN on day power. It's yet another "Prairie 730" in an area with fantastic ground conductivity and a resultant impressive great day signal. KKDA from Dallas also falls into that category
