Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Not kidding, I can't stand those blanks that are copied from rentals. You lose the original quality of the factory tape when it's copied from another VCR, and even if you end up getting a Macrovision tape to work, it looks awful. What a waste. In 1999, I'd be better off buying a movie at the store for $14.99, or taping it off HBO in SP, than wasting my time with copying from one VCR to the next.
Hopefully you will have more success with the Montana tapes. I was able to get through all but one of the tapes from the last estate sale. All taped in Los Angeles:

Tape 1 - Julie Andrews: The Sound of Christmas taped off KABC/ABC 12/16/1987 with commercials; Barbara Mandrell Christmas special taped off KHJ-9 in December 1987 with commercials; Bob Hope's USO Christmas from the Persian Gulf taped off KNBC/NBC 1/9/1988 with commercials; The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour: The 20th Reunion taped off KCBS/CBS 2/3/1988 minus commercials; America's Tribute to Bob Hope taped off KNBC/NBC 3/5/1988 with commercials; Down and Out with Donald Duck taped off KNBC/NBC in March or April 1988 with commercials. JVC T-120
Tape 2 - Bob Hope's Christmas Cheer from Saudi Arabia taped off KNBC/NBC 1/12/1991 with commercials. SP mode, and blank after the show. Radio Shack T-120
Tape 3 - Los Angeles Olympic Closing Ceremonies taped off KABC/ABC 8/12/1984 minus commercials; KABC Eyewitness News sports segment taped 8/12/1984; Olympics look-back special taped the same night minus commercials, followed by another KABC Eyewitness News clip from 8/13 or 8/14/1984 on Olympic souvenirs; and a clip of a Dallas Cowboys preseason football game where Olympic athletes were saluted at halftime. Memorex T-120
Tape 4 - Bob Hope's Birthday Memories taped off KNBC/NBC 5/14/1994 with some commercials; Bob Hope's Christmas Special clip taped off KNBC/NBC 12/14/1994, then reverts back to the Birthday special. SP mode on both. TDK T-120
Tape 5 - Happy Birthday Bob: 50 Stars Salute Your 50 Years with NBC taped off KNBC/NBC 5/16/1988 with some commercials pulled out; part of the Irving Berlin 100th Birthday Celebration taped off KCBS/CBS 5/27/1988 with commercials; Bob Hope's Love Affair with Lucy taped off KNBC/NBC 9/23/1989 minus commercials. Maxell T-120
Tape 6 - The Golden Girls episodes taped off KNBC/NBC 4/26/1986, 6/7/1986, 6/21/1986, 6/28/1986 and 7/5/1986 with commercials; rest of tape consists of taped-over home movies circa early 1986 of a family's new baby. Maxell T-120
Tape 7 - Bob Hope's Christmas Show from Hawaii taped off KNBC/NBC 12/16/1989 with commercials; Bob Hope's USO Road Trip to the Berlin Wall and Moscow taped off KNBC/NBC 5/19/1990 minus commercials; part of Bob Hope's 'Don't Shoot, It's Me' taped off KNBC/NBC 9/13/1990 minus commercials. Maxell T-120
Tape 8 - Opening ceremonies for the 1988 Summer Olympics taped off KNBC/NBC 9/16/1988 with commercials; most of the Soviet Union vs. United States gold medal volleyball game taped off KNBC/NBC 10/1/1988 minus commercials, The Tribute, The Test and the Triumph (Olympics special) taped off KNBC/NBC in October 1988 minus commercials; ends with a partial broadcast of Friday Night Videos taped off KNBC/NBC 9/17/1988 with commercials. A first for me, as I've never found FNV from any year (besides a 1994 episode of the revamped 'Friday Night'), and a majority of FNV was not seen as KNDO signed off after Late Night. Maxell T-120
Tape 9 - Opening ceremonies for the 1988 Winter Olympics taped off KABC/ABC 2/13/1988 with commercials; followed by a mix of various '88 Winter Olympics events - figure skating pair competition, bobsled, speed skating - have not found any commercials on these. Oddly enough, a LOT of blank space in between the competition clips. JVC T-120
A 10th tape has more 1984 Summer Olympics content on it, but I haven't gone through it yet. Nice piece of paper inside listing every competition and recording taped from the Olympics. Doubtful I'll find any commercials on that one knowing the closing ceremonies were commercial-free, but you never know.

I got the tapes I ordered from Helena on Tuesday and have been going through them the last few days. More than 35 tapes in all, but many ended up being duds (copies of rental tapes, home movies, etc.) Two of the tapes were actually retail movie tapes in T-120 cases. Still found some diamonds in the rough though, listed below.

TAPE 1: Three-part episode of Nature ("Kingdom of the Ice Bear") taped from KUSM in Bozeman in October 1995, short promo blocks separate the three parts that were shown back-to-back; episode of Wings taped from the Discovery Channel in February 1997 with commercials. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 2: Five episodes of Wild Discovery (during Animals of Africa Week) taped from the Discovery Channel on June 3-7, 1996 with commercials. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 3: Starts with a short clip from an episode of Judge Judy in the show's early days circa 1996 or 1997 taped from unknown Helena TV station, then reverts to a recording of A Mother's Betrayal (made-for-TV movie) taped from USA in July 1995 (not the original broadcast) with commercials; partially taped-over episode of The Young and the Restless taped from KXLF in Helena on 7/27/1995 with commercials; full episode of Y&R taped from KXLF on 7/25/1995 with commercials. Scotch T-120.

TAPE 4: Five more episodes of Wild Discovery taped from the Discovery Channel in July 1996 with commercials. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 5: Treasure Island (1990 made-for-TV movie) taped from WSBK in Boston (presumably a superstation feed from a C-band satellite dish) in December 1991 with commercials. Memorex T-120.

TAPE 6: The Cat from Outer Space (1978) taped from the Disney Channel circa 1988; That Darn Cat (1965) and part of A Passage to India (1984) taped from the Disney Channel on 3/27/1988 with promos in between. Memorex T-120.

TAPE 7: National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) taped from KTVH in Helena (NBC Sunday Night Movie) on 12/11/1994 with commercials; All I Want for Christmas (1991) taped from KTVH (NBC Movie of the Week) on 12/23/1994 with commercials; broadcast of Channel 12 Weekend News at 10:00 taped from KTVH on 3/26/1995 with commercials; partially taped-over broadcast of Now with Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric and partial episode of Law & Order taped from KTVH on 8/24/1994 with commercials. BASF T-130.

TAPE 8: This content was actually taped over a prerecorded tape--Rugrats Discover America VHS release (includes the episodes "Discover America," "The Jungle," "Journey to the Center of the Basement" and "Faire Play," as well as a mini-documentary on the making of Rugrats in Paris: The Movie) copied from retail tape; after the retail tape ends is the second VCR's feed showing a partial episode of M*A*S*H, an episode of World's Wildest Police Videos and a partial episode of Super Greed taped from KMTF in Helena on 5/5/2000 with commercials. Tape ran out after about three hours in LP mode.

TAPE 9: Starts with a few seconds of a live performance of "Who Let the Dogs Out" by the Baha Men on Nickelodeon's Slime Time Live, then cuts to a broadcast of TRL taped from MTV on 11/14/2000 minus commercials, cool find though--includes a live performance of "Original Prankster" by The Offspring featuring Redman; partially taped-over recording of Twister (1996) taped from unknown pay TV channel circa 1997; rest of the tape has a compilation of clips from the Twister: Nature's Fury video series, which was apparently broadcast on DirecTV Direct Ticket. Sony T-160.

TAPE 10: Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) taped from Showtime circa 1990; Overboard (1987) taped from unknown pay TV channel circa 1990; Hoosiers (1987) taped from USA in March 1993 with a few commercials. Scotch T-120.

One of the "duds" was a recording of Monster Bucks II from the Bill Jordan Realtree Outdoors series copied from a retail tape, but interestingly enough, the retail tape actually had commercials for hunting products incorporated within the video like you would have seen on the TNN series of the same name.

Too bad only 10 tapes were keepers, that's only 29% of the tapes. I just barely got a 50% rate on the last lot from CO Springs. But you sure did deliver on those tapes. KTVH newscasts are so hard to find, I'll view it this weekend.
And anything from KMTF is almost one-of-a-kind. Absolutely will view that this weekend. Especially since they were only Fox for less than 3 years. Do you know what the prerecorded tape was? It would be amusing if that was 'The Rugrats Movie' on VHS! It ran 81 minutes but had a CatDog short and plenty of kiddie previews before the movie, so I'm sure the tape length was closer to 90 minutes, which is 3 hours LP. I think I've only found one retail tape that someone used to tape over. That was a 5-hour Fox Family aircheck from June 1999.
Funny you say there were actual commercials in a home video. I have KIMA's Flood of '96 special on VHS, prerecorded and 30 minutes length. Every commercial that was aired over KIMA's airwaves during the special, ended up on the video. Bad editing, or to prevent multiple minutes of black at the end?

For $59.99, as much as I should keep myself away from spending on tapes, there's a Beta lot from Kennewick on eBay!! And there's a Super Bowl, movies, WKRP, Mary Tyler Moore and Barney Miller episodes mixed in! Some of these tapes are very old, like early 1980s. I should email the seller, he/she hasn't played them but I wonder if they were acquired locally and if the original owner lived in Tri-Cities in the 1980s. Imagine the possibilities - like 1982 or 1983 KEPR stuff? KNDU?

Got an email back. Basically, the item's location is wrong, the seller moved from Kennewick to Arizona, and actually the Beta tapes come from Arizona, so there won't be anything taped from Tri-Cities. Oh well. I was hoping for a holy grail lot of KNDU, KEPR and KVEW, but I'll just ignore that lot and move on from there.

Much of the typewritten label on the eighth tape was scratched off pretty good, but what I can read of it reads "Y2K Examination...Day 1, Tape 3." Even having been taped over, there was no recording tab on the tape, so whoever taped over it must have removed the plastic tape from the open slot afterward.

I failed to mention there was an 11th keeper in this list as well.

TAPE 11: Grumpy Old Men (1993) taped from KXLF on 3/21/1999 minus commercials; Scream (1996) taped from Starz 2 in March 1999; Less Than Zero (1987) and part of The Substance of Fire (1996) taped from Starz 2 in March 1999 with promos in between. RCA T-120.

Got it. Can't find this Y2K thing on eBay, but I'm guessing it was a conspiracy theory video - 'what if' scenarios at midnight on 1/1/2000...a lot of people thought it was going to be the end of the world.

Dude! Are you kidding? I would get it no matter where it is from! If I had an opportunity to get a WKRP with original music intact I would jump,on it!

Because I prefer having local content. Tri-Cities is nearby, just 1 1/2 hours away and we get Tri-Cities stations (plus Yakima) on DIRECTV. I prefer looking for markets that are nearby or are small and have very little content on YouTube. You just couldn't find commercial breaks from KXLF, KFBB OR KRTV until I bought some Montana Beta and VHS lots over the past couple of years...
My holy grail find would be ANYTHING, anything, from KXGN Glendive. Paging the 5,000 residents of Glendive right now for some tapes stashed in their closets or wooden tape holders....

Anything from KXON-TV is extremely rare since the station was broadcast in Mitchell, South Dakota. It was originally an ABC affiliate in the 70s before it switched over to an NBC affiliate when it became KDLT-TV in 1982. You don't see commercial breaks from KXON-TV ever on Youtube.

YouTube people:
Just letting you know that I have two strikes now for Martha Stewart. Almost everything from the old run was taken down by MSL Omnimedia...who owns her magazine. Shows that are 20 years old and not in reruns taken down, YEARS after uploading. Sad!
One more and I lose 6,800 videos. Thank god everything is up on Amazon Drive, but not everything from the old channel...like the first 200 videos or so.

Were those videos you had clips from her show or just promos for her show in commercial breaks?

Gorgeous day, and finally some estate sales to hit. Came back with an absolutely massive haul, worth the long wait between the multiple snowstorms we had last month! Unbelievable finds, some of them, and some are worth quite a bit of $$$.

First estate sale - 13 tapes, left another 20 behind which mainly had PBS stuff anyways.
Tape 1 - 'Ben Hur' (1959) taped off TNT 2/23/1991 with commercials; part of 'Casual Sex?' (1988) taped off K53CY (first incarnation of Fox in Yakima) on 1/2/1991 with commercials, their 8:00 movie. A great find...hard to find this! GoldStar T-120
Tape 2 - Episode of It Could Happen Tomorrow on the possible impacts of a Mt. Rainier eruption, taped off The Weather Channel 1/30/2006 with commercials and a satellite LF, which taped over at least six previous recordings; partial broadcast of the Washington vs. Tennessee volleyball semifinal, The U and ESPN Hollywood taped off ESPN2 12/14/2005 with commercials; follows with the end of Great Scenic Railway Journeys and most of He Touched Me: The Gospel Music of Elvis Presley taped off KYVE/PBS in late 2005 with George Ray's pledge breaks; partial second round coverage of the Open Championship and most of a Law & Order rerun taped off TNT 7/15/2005 with commercials (Jack Nicklaus' final birdie). Maxell T-120
Tape 3 - Idaho's Scenic Splendor taped off Idaho Public Television in November 1995 with promos (not sure which station in the network...the man who passed away did get his teaching degree from the University of Idaho decades ago, perhaps he was visiting Moscow and taped it off KUID?); part of an unknown 1980s movie minus commercials follows; then 'Captain Nemo and the Underwater City' (1969) taped off KSTW circa late 1980s minus commercials. Kodak T-120
Tape 4 - Peter Pan (live-action 1960 play) and part of the Making of 101 Dalmatians taped off The Disney Channel 1/18/1997 with promos afterwards (SP); ends with about 3 minutes of an unknown western movie also in SP mode. Scotch T-120

Polaroid T-120
Tape 8 - Fiedler's Greatest Hits taped off PBS (presumed KYVE) circa 1985; Evening at Pops taped off unknown PBS (likely KYVE) 3/1/1987; Sentimental Swing: The Music of Tommy Dorsey taped off KYVE/PBS around July 1987 with pledge breaks; Willie Nelson performance on Austin City Limits; part of Julie Andrews: The Sound of Christmas taped off KAPP/ABC 12/16/1987 with commercials (I just found this off KABC last month); A Christmas at Pops taped off KYVE/PBS in December 1987. Gemini T-120

Not being a collector myself, I'm curious about your statement that some of these tapes are "worth quite a bit of $$$." First, which ones? The old bowl games? The 1990s Sesame Streets? The PBS series and specials? Second, are they valuable only to a small circle of obsessed collectors such as yourself, or, if I were to come across tapes containing similar material here in Connecticut, could I just plop them on eBay and wait for a bidding war to start? How much money, tops, is the most you've ever paid, or ever heard of being paid, for a single tape? Thanks.

Cartoon and MTV tapes are going for a lot of money on eBay nowadays. Recently a tape with 5+ hours of early '90s Sesame Street went for over $50. A 90210 tape recently went for $86, two Rugrats tapes recently got bids of $56 and almost $100. '90s throwback nostalgia is hot right now, and it shows. Of course, sold as *blank* but no one ever tapes over them...
Had a TNT tape (a single one) go for about $40 one time. It could have been over $90 but the winning buyer failed to pay for it...so he got blocked and I had to start again. Lost $50.00 on the next sale. Ugh. Perhaps I'll have success with these next few.

The house I visited last week was open for business once again today, and all the tapes were FREEEEE! More great finds:

Tape 14 (from that house) - 'Tom Thumb' (1958) taped off Turner Classic Movies sometime in 2005 with promos afterwards; a few minutes of a Los Angeles Kings-Detroit Red Wings game follows taped off ESPN in the late '90s, then blank. Scotch T-120
Tape 15 - Great Performances: Irving Berlin's America taped off KYVE/PBS circa late 1989; Anne Murray's Family Christmas and Julie & Carol: Together Again taped off CBC North 12/10/1989 with commercials (rare as hen's teeth to find Canadian TV down here! Off the C-Band Anik feed, with plenty of analog sparklies and noise. This was the only way to see Pacific time CBC on the dish, CBUT was not uplinked.); partial broadcast of the NCAA Wrestling Tournamentt taped off ESPN 3/18/1989 with commercials. Scotch T-120
Tape 16 - 'Thumbelina' (1994) taped off The Disney Channel 1/17/1997 with promos afterwards (SP mode); very end of 'Spartacus' (1960) and start of Reflections on the Silver Screen (with Jean Simmons) taped off AMC 7/15/1992 with promos; ends with a partial school administration training copied from another VHS tape, produced by the province of British Columbia. Scotch EG+ T-120
Tape 17 - Marvin Hamlisch & The Pittsburgh Pops taped off KYVE/PBS circa 1997 (all pledge breaks paused out); Great Performances: Les Miserables in Concert taped off KYVE/PBS 3/16/1997 with pledge breaks, both partial and full; part of the 1995 Sun Bowl taped off KIMA/CBS 12/29/1995 with commercials; ends with a brief clip of LPGA Golf on ESPN taped around 1994-95. Scotch EG+ T-120
Tape 18 - 'Pete's Dragon' (1977) taped off The Disney Channel 2/5/1997 with some promos, in SP mode, then blank. Sony T-160
Tape 19 - Part 3 and 4 of Peter the Great taped off TBS 2/26/1991 with commercials (LP mode). Chrome Master T-120
Tape 20 - Late night/early morning aircheck of TBS taped 12/15/1989 with commercials: 'Exodus' (1960), Three Stooges short, and part of Hogan's Heroes. Maxell HGX-Gold T-120.
Tape 21 - Multiple episodes of The Lawrence Welk Show taped off KYVE/PBS in April 1993; and another one taped around 1995, some with promos. Memorex T-120
Tape 22 - 'Cleopatra' (1963) taped off Encore circa June 1991 with some promos before/after the movie, afterwards there's partial coverage of AARA Racquetball taped off Prime Sports NW in June 1991 with commercials. Maxell HGX-Gold T-120.
Tape 23 - Another broadcast of 'Cleopatra' (1963) taped off TBS 12/16/1989 with commercials. No idea why he decided to tape it twice, maybe because he forgot it was already recorded two years prior? Maxell HGX-Gold T-120
Tape 24 - 60 Minutes: The Entertainers taped off KIMA/CBS 7/24/1992 with commercials; 'That's Entertainment!' (1974), an abridged version of Over Washington (the hour-long helicopter tour of Washington, I've had the full broadcast on a retail VHS for years) and part of Great Performances with Peter, Paul and Mary taped off KYVE/PBS in February 1996 with pledge break segments (originating from KCTS); ends with a bit of Washington State-UCLA basketball taped off K53CY/FOX 2/8/1992 with commercials. Scotch T-120
Tape 25 - Biography episodes (Bob Hope and Bing Crosby) taped off A&E 12/27/1998 with commercials; Biography (Rat Pack Pt 1) taped off A&E 1/3/1999 with commercials; Biography (Rat Pack Pt 2) taped off A&E 1/4/1999 with commercials; Biography (Sammy Davis Jr.) taped off A&E 1/6/1999 with commercials

Nice finds! I also found a recording of 60 Minutes: The Entertainers, but mine didn't have the commercials. One of my YouTube acquaintances, who goes by the name of "Smoke," already uploaded a good chunk of his copy of the show. He too has a pretty interesting VHS collection, which he has listed together in the form of a Google slideshow.

I also once found a tape of Les Miserables in Concert taped from WVIZ during the show's original broadcast on March 1, 1996, but I don't have the tape anymore.

I found some recorded VHS tapes as well as one pre-recorded VHS tape at a random thrift store in Spencer, Iowa. I also spotted two boxes of recorded VHS tapes that were filled with Iowa State games on them as I only picked up a few tapes.

Tape 1: Elvis: The Great Performances - recorded off The Family Channel on September 27, 1997 with commercials - Kodak T-120.
Tape 2: Iowa vs. Michigan State - recorded off ESPN around 1992-1993 - Walmart T-120.
Tape 3: Iowa vs. Iowa State - recorded off ESPN around 1991-1992 - MGM T-120.
Tape 4: Iowa vs. Indiana/Iowa vs. Minnesota - recorded off KCAU-ABC 9 in Sioux City, Iowa on January 1, 1993 - Laser T-120.
Tape 5: Iowa vs. Ohio State/Iowa vs. Illinois - recorded off ESPN around 1993-1994 - Sony T-120.
Tape 6: Iowa vs. Northwestern/Iowa vs. Michigan State - recorded off ESPN around 1991-1992 - Laser T-120.
Tape 7: Iowa vs. Iowa State 1989 - recorded off Cyclone Network sometime in 1989 - Laser T-120.

Pre-Recorded VHS Tape:
Tape 1: The Legend of the Hawaiian Slammers - Dic Video

Someone must have recorded every Iowa game they could get and then chucked them when they found them in a closet. I'm guessing the Cyclone Network was a syndicated package of Iowa games for air later on local stations. Like one hour highlight broadcasts.

Went to two sales today and didn't find anything. The first sale, an estate sale about 4 miles west of home (way out in West Valley) was packed to the gills with stuff. Every closet, every nook & cranny, every part of the garage, full of stuff. They never threw anything away, about 20 years worth of Family Circle in the storage room for example. Ended up finding a cute birdhouse for $3.00, shaped like a tree trunk with some painted pine cones on the top. Perhaps I'll hook it up on the balcony and see if the finches will use it for their nest.
Also got a Burger King Lion King cup for free! Left behind some cool vintage kitchen stuff, closets full of clothes and towels, boxes worth of glassware, mason jars, you name it. VHS tapes were only Disney, other kids stuff and about a dozen PG-13/R movies, all store-bought of course.
Second sale was a moving sale that only had retail VHS tapes.

A wrestling kind of estate sale this Saturday afternoon, near downtown Yakima. Six tapes found, five keepers. This should be profitable when I get them up to eBay. Wanted $2.00 a tape, in this day and age, kind of expensive. Had over 5,000 LPs - mostly country, gospel, '50s pop, LOTS of country K-Tel records and Time-Life...

Tape 1 - WCW Clash of the Champions taped off TBS on 1/13/1994 with some commercials (some edited out). Fuji T-120
Tape 2 - WCW Clash of the Champions taped off TBS on 1/25/1995 with commercials. Memorex T-120
Tape 3 - Partial episode of The Beverly Hillbillies, Sanford & Son and WCW Clash of the Champions taped off TBS 8/18/1993 with commercials. Memorex T-120
Tape 4 - WCW Clash of the Champions taped off TBS 1/13/1993 with some commercials. Maxell T-120
Tape 5 - WCW Clash of the Champions taped off TBS 1/27/1994 with commercials. Fuji T-120
A sixth tape with Super Bowl 24 had no commercials, no halftime show and was a 2nd or even 3rd-generation copy.

A moving sale earlier today had VHS tapes in the description, but all I saw was retail stuff.
