Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

I would just upload the DJ dialogues and commercial breaks. That's what I've done with my cassettes. Only problem is I don't have a device to convert it from my boom box directly to my computer, so I just place my camera in front of the speaker and record it. I'll have to see if I can find a cassette-to-PC audio capturing device at some point.

Two tapes found at probably the last estate sale of the year. There was another marked with Jane Fonda that I left behind, because it was obviously copied from another tape.
Tape 1 - 'Rasputin' (1996) taped off the original HBO broadcast on 3/23/1996 with about 15 minutes of promos afterwards, and ends with the first 10 mins. of the HBO Boxing match pitting Arturo Gatti vs. Wilson Rodriguez. Maxell T-120
Tape 2 - The Buccaneers miniseries (Masterpiece Theatre) taped off KYVE/PBS on 10/8, 10/9 and 10/10/1995, the last part contains a lengthy intershow and the start of Butterflies; ends with an hour of first-round coverage of the Northville Long Island Classic taped off ESPN 8/18/1995 with commercials. TDK T-120

Also, more stuff found from the Oakdale lot recently...
Tape 11 - Mostly Election '88 stuff: Partial broadcast of the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour taped off KVIE/PBS 11/4/1988; clip of West 57th taped 11/5/1988 off KXTV; campaign infomercial for Lyndon LaRouche taped off KJEO (no commercials obviously), Sunday Today and Meet the Press taped off KCRA/NBC 11/6/1988 with commercials; INN Magazine taped off unknown station (KTXL perhaps?) on 11/6/1988 with commercials, none local; 'Winchester '73' (1950) taped off KSCH 11/6/1988 minus commercials; Is This Any Way to Elect a President? (NBC News special) taped off KCRA later that night with commercials; 5-10 minutes of CBS News Election Night coverage follows (post-Bush victory, followed by a 4-minute clip of KTXL's Ten O'Clock News from 11/8/1988, and ends with a brief clip of ABC's Home with Robb Weller and Sandy Hill. Master T-120
Tape 12 - 11/20/1988 programs on this tape: World Tomorrow taped off KOVR with commercials and start of The Coral Ridge Hour; Meet the Press taped off KCRA with commercials; 'The Muppet Movie' (1979) taped off KTXL with commercials; 'My Bodyguard' (1980) taped off KTXL minus commercials; and 'Scooby-Doo & The Reluctant Werewolf' (1986) taped off KSCH with commercials. Polaroid T-120
Tape 13 - Nash Bridges taped off KOVR/CBS 9/11/1998 with commercials; Politically Incorrect taped off KXTV/ABC early morning 9/12/1998 minus commercials; Saturday Night Live's Best of Gilda Radner taped off KCRA/NBC 9/12-13/1998 with commercials; Comedy Showcase taped off KTXL-40 9/13/1998 with commercials; Animal Rescue taped off KXTV 9/13/1998 with commercials; Face the Nation taped off KOVR/CBS 9/13/1998 with commercials, then flips over for a partial clip of This Week off KXTV/ABC, ends with Woof! Scotch T-120

Lynden LaRouche was an independent Democratic candidate. The infomercial was a half-hour long and had to do with Socrates...I didn't want to upload it due to copyright but I can definitely pull it out for download.

Got a pretty good amount of tapes at two sales this past Friday and Saturday. First one only had one tape, but the second one had MANY, although I only picked out eight.

The estate sale I visited Friday was in Medina and the one tape I picked up contained a two-hour aircheck of WVIZ from 12/16/2006, specifically partial broadcasts of Andre Rieu: Christmas Around the World and My Music: Legends of Country, including several pledge breaks and a few promos. Tape was an unknown brand, didn't come in a case.

The moving sale I visited Saturday was in Seville and turned up many more tapes that were packed into a closet in the den of the house. More on the house and other interesting items inside it later. I ended up only picking up eight tapes, but there were a ton more in the closet. It was near closing time when I showed up, so I was a little rushed in cherry-picking through the collection.

TAPE 1: Episode of The Dead Zone taped from USA on 8/28/2007 with commercials; two episodes of The Twilight Zone and an episode of The X-Files taped from Sci-Fi Channel on 8/29/2007 with commercials; most of an episode of Live with Regis and Kelly taped from WEWS on 8/29/2007 minus commercials; episode of The Martha Stewart Show taped from WEWS on 8/29/2007 with commercials, interrupted by an ABC News Special Report with Alberto Gonzales' post-resignation press conference...I stopped looking through this one after the news cut-in because at that point, the tape was making my VCR make squealing sounds whenever I would fast-forward it. RCA T-120.

TAPE 2: Episodes of The X-Files taped from WJW on November 11 and 18, 2001 with commercials; episode of Live with Regis and Kelly taped from WEWS on 11/21/2001 with commercials; last few minutes of an unknown black-and-white film taped from AMC circa 2001; episode of Live with Regis and Kelly taped from WEWS on 11/15/2001 with commercials; partial episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire Supermodel Edition taped from WEWS on 11/15/2001 with a few commercials; episode of Live with Regis and Kelly taped from WEWS on 11/16/2001 with commercials; partially taped-over episode of Live with Regis and Kelly taped from WEWS on 11/14/2001 with a few commercials, also has part of an East Central Ohio Emergency Alert System test that was transmitted through Time Warner Cable. RCA T-120.

TAPE 3: Parts one and two of Dinotopia (ABC miniseries) and first segment of Primetime Thursday taped from WEWS on Thanksgiving 2002 with commercials; partial broadcasts of part three and part four of Shaka Zulu (1986 miniseries) taped from the History Channel (Movies in Time) in November 2002 with commercials. Sony T-120.

TAPE 4: Episodes of The New Newlywed Game and The New Hollywood Squares taped from WKYC on 4/16/1987 with commercials; Jaws 2 (1978) taped from WEWS (ABC Friday Night Movie) on 4/17/1987 with commercials; Dinosaur! (CBS documentary special narrated by the late Christopher Reeve) taped from WJW on 4/21/1987 with commercials; partial Weekend Movie presentation of Fiddler on the Roof (1971) taped from WUAB on Mother's Day 1987 with a few commercials (I already have the full broadcast of that movie on another tape). Kodak T-120.

TAPE 5: Episode of The Unexplained and two episodes of Bob Vila's Home Again taped from A&E in February 1997 with commercials; episode of The X-Files taped from WJW on 2/16/1997 with commercials; partial episode of Furniture to Go taped from TLC on 2/17/1997 with commercials; episode of Nova taped from WVIZ on 2/18/1997 with a couple of promos beforehand; episode of Antiques Roadshow and first couple minutes of Mystery! taped from WVIZ in February 1997 with promos before and after; tape then reverts to a partial intro to an NYPD Blue episode and a partial commercial that aired afterward before it goes blank. Sony T-120.

TAPE 6: Several episodes of Mr. Wizard's World taped from Nickelodeon circa May 1990, all but two episodes are minus commercials; Gorillas in the Mist (1988) taped from unknown pay TV channel circa 1990; part of Scrooged (1988) taped from unknown pay TV channel circa 1989 or 1990. Panasonic T-120.

TAPE 7: Episode of Montel Williams with the late Sylvia Browne taped from WKYC on 12/13/2006 with commercials; two episodes of The Secret Life Of taped from Food Network in December 2006 with commercials; partial episode of The New Yankee Workshop and episodes of Ask This Old House and This Old House taped from WNEO/WEAO on 12/31/2006 with promos; six episodes of The Twilight Zone taped from Sci-Fi Channel on 12/31/2006 with commercials. TDK T-120.

The eighth tape from this sale, a TDK T-120, was a home video of a middle school science class with the teacher demonstrating an experiment. I recognized the teacher as being the same homeowner I saw at the house. I even looked up the name that was written on the label of that tape and it came back to the same address. My understanding is he and his wife will be moving to Florida, hence the sale. There were several other items of interest that I spotted throughout the house. The living room included a smart TV and a Toshiba VCR/DVD recorder combo, the latter of which was not for sale. The bedroom included a box full of records, a drawer full of kids' VHS tapes in clamshell cases and a vintage radio that was playing WDOK at the time (yes, the same station that's gotten a lot of backlash lately over removing a song from its holiday playlist). The den was where I spotted all the home-recorded/non-children's VHS tapes, along with a TV/VCR combo that was playing a retail copy of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) and a box full of audio cassettes, both retail and home-recorded, which I didn't get a chance to look through.

As for the closet full of VHS tapes, there were many that were not labeled, along with a couple of tapes of the Sci-Fi Channel's miniseries Taken (already have parts of it on other tapes), one or two tapes labeled "Art Bell's Ghost Stories" (I thought he only did radio?), another tape that had another Montel episode with Sylvia Browne and who knows what else. And judging from the brands of tapes I spotted, it looks like this guy continued recording on VHS even after the medium had faded into obsolescence, i.e. I found some late 2000s Sony tapes and early 2010s Memorex tapes in the mix.

Speaking of obscure content, I managed to have a recording of an MGM/UA Premiere Network airing of Yentl which was recorded off of KCAU-9 in Sioux City, Iowa on December 27-28, 1986 which includes some classic 80s commercials and PSAs. It also has a sign-off from KCAU-9 as well as KBGT-8 before they switched their call letters to KCAN in Albion, NE. It is on Youtube under my MancaveProductions account.

I'll have to view that soon. And it wasn't long after KBGT went from an Independent to ABC. Apparently they were 24 hours a day too.
I have started 2019 off with a bang - just ordered the first eBay VHS lot of the year. 40 tapes from Colorado Springs, mostly late 1980s/early 1990s looking tapes, some older KMCs, and BASF's. Many not labeled on the side. Southern Colorado is rare to find on YouTube, compared to Denver. Hopefully I'll have a decent treasure trove from KOAA, KKTV and KRDO.

Seven tapes found at an estate sale in Akron yesterday, four keepers in all. There were a few other used blanks on the shelf I found them on that I left behind. All of the tapes needed a good exterior cleaning before playing any of them back, as many of them were pretty dusty.

TAPE 1: Notting Hill (1999) taped from DirecTV Direct Ticket on 12/26/1999, ends with five minutes of a promo loop before the rest of the tape is erased with black screen. Scotch T-160 (SP mode).

TAPE 2: Riverdance: The Show and Lord of the Dance taped from WITF in Harrisburg, PA on 8/23/1997 with pledge breaks and promos--first find from this market. Blockbuster T-120.

TAPE 3: Episode of The Rosie O'Donnell Show (guests Mike Douglas, Rob Estes and Hanson) taped from WJW in Cleveland on 5/14/1998 with commercials, also has the opening to Fox 8 News at Five; Seinfeld: The Clip Show and final episode of Seinfeld taped from WKYC in Cleveland on 5/14/1998 with commercials; episode of The Rosie O'Donnell Show (guests Bill Cosby, Ian Buchanan, Babyface and Des'ree) taped from WJW on 5/15/1998 with commercials, ends with the opening to Fox 8 News at Five. Unknown brand T-120, no label or case.

TAPE 4: Avalon (1990) taped from HBO Plus on 12/27/1999 with promos before and after the movie, copied from a recording on a TiVo DVR--perhaps maybe one of the first ones sold(?) Scotch T-160.

Hard to find estate sales at this time of year, at least you got some decent stuff especially the third tape. I have at least one '98 episode of Rosie O'Donnell out in the Oakdale box, but I'm still going through other tapes first.
At the same time, I have 40 new tapes coming to the door from Colorado Springs, ebay user 'onevideoatatime.' Unlike the Denver market, local content from Colorado Springs and Pueblo is rather hard to find on YouTube. Another small market for the collection! Many of the tapes are late 1980s tape stock, BASF, Scotch, Fuji etc. with some older, some newer. Hoping to find some great stuff from KOAA, KRDO and/or KKTV in the box.

Results from Colorado Springs. Rental copies, the one PPV porno I found (and threw out), and duds not shown. Looks like I got more duds than keepers in this lot, but some great finds still made including the my personal first (w/ commercials) from Univision. And programming from Germany and the Philippines mixed in, too! Enjoy!

Tape 1 - Episodes of One Life to Live and General Hospital taped off KRDO/ABC 6/10/2002 with commercials; partial episode of Live with Regis & Kelly (with Laila Ali), Martha Stewart Living, All My Children, One Lfife to Live and part of General Hospital taped off KRDO/ABC 6/11/2002 with commercials.
Tape 2 - Last hour of 'She Fought Alone' (1995) taped off KOAA/NBC 11/6/1995 with commercials; partial episode of General Hospital taped off KRDO/ABC in May 1995 with commercials, and after about 30 minutes of blank picture; part of 'Moment of Truth: Stalking Back' (1993) taped off KOAA/NBC 10/18/1993 with commercials
Tape 3 - (T-60) Snapped off at the beginning, so had to splice the reel...too bad. But still worth it. Larry King Live taped off CNN in January or February 1988 with commercials (guest Robert Wagner); episode of General Hospital taped off KRDO/ABC 5/22/1987 with commercials; Emphasis on Arts (local program), Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom and a few minutes of Fishing the West taped off KRDO in May 1987 with commercials.
Tape 4 - Episode of Batman: The Animated Series taped off KXRM/FOX in early 1994 with commercials - otherwise all other content erased. Scotch T-120
Tape 5 - Block of NBC sitcoms taped off WRC/NBC 9/20/1994 with commercials: Wings, The Martin Short Show, Frasier and The John Larroquette Show. Scotch T-120
Tape 6 - A crazy find indeed: Bugs Bunny Christmas Tales minus commercials; part of 'Vigilante Force' (1976) taped off RPN-9 Manila, Philippines in September 1982 with the original commercials...apparently Philippines was/is NTSC like we are! The station called themselves 'The Leader Network' at that time. RPN stands for Radio Philippines Network. Also: 'Cabaret' (1972) also taped off RPN-9 without commercials in September or October 1982. Interesting that they kept a clock on the screen at all times except the ads. Maxell T-120 written in Japanese.

Tape 11 - Partial broadcast of NewsFirst 5/30, Seinfeld and Providence taped off KOAA/NBC 11/23/2001 with commercials; very end of Ally McBeal, Fox 21 News at Nine, The Drew Carey Show and most of Just Shoot Me! taped off KXRM/FOX 11/12/2001 with commercials; partial episodes of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and 48 Hours taped off KKTV/CBS 2/1/2001 with commercials. Sony T-160
Tape 12 - PAL content converted into NTSC on a second-generation copy: 'Angelique' (1964) copied from a rental tape (by Taurus Video in Germany), followed by a folk music program taped off Germany's ZDF in 1997, and Musikantenstadl taped off SF-1 in Switzerland around the same time, hosted by Austrian-born Karl Moik (who died in 2015). Also found something else taped off ZDF, music-related. Did not see any adverts on this tape. Maxell T-160 copied from an E-180 or 240 of some type.
Tape 13 - 'Jesus, El Nino Dios' (1971) taped off Univision in December 2000 with commercials (first content with commercials from the #1 Spanish network in America...this is from the national feed and not a local station); 'La vida de nuestro senor Jesuchristo' (1980) taped off Univision in December 2001 minus commercials; partial episode of Abrazame muy fuerte (telenovela produced by Televisa) taped off Univision in January 2001 with commercials; partial episode of Mujeres enganadas (another telenovela) taped off Univision in late 2000 with commercials. Fuji T-120
Tape 14 - World's Greatest Magic taped off KOAA/NBC 11/23/1994 with commercials. SKC T-120
Tape 15 - P.M. Yoga workout copied from retail tape; after tape runs out there's part of Money Tonight and Your Portfolio taped off CNBC in early 1994 with commercials, along with a partial home movie of (I think) a high school talent show. Scotch T-120
Tape 16 - All My Children and One Life to Live episodes taped off KRDO/ABC on 2/23/1994 with commercials. Tozai T-120

Tape 18 - After an hour of blanked-out content, this tape has episodes of Young & The Restless, Bold & The Beautiful and As the World Turns taped off WCPX/CBS (TV 6 Orlando FL...my first find from them) on 6/3/1997 with commercials. Also has Guiding Light (they aired it at 10AM, 1-day delay I suspect), Young & The Restless and Bold & The Beautiful taped off WCPX/CBS 4/29/1997 with commercials. MGM T-120
Haven't checked a 19th tape marked with CNBC, but it should at least have some commercials from around the same time as the other CNBC finds made. That's another Scotch tape.
Another tape was discovered with more OLTL, taped in May 2004 off KRDO w/ commercials. However it has to go into the trash. This is a vintage mid 1980s BASF tape that is FLAKING off. I had to fast-forward about 20-30 minutes on the external rewinder and played it in the backup mono-only VCR used to preview tapes before I post the commercials. Tape started flaking off onto the heads and I'll have to clean it. I have never seen oxide shedding before on a tape, it must have been stored in a bad place (like in the blazing sun or freezing cold) and 30 years later, it's fading away.

Not a bad haul at all and some unique finds, especially the international airchecks. Strangely enough, I've succeeded in finding some overseas content within the last couple of years as well. In 2016, I remember finding a six-hour tape of Romanian TV programming and commercials from 2010 (mostly from PRO TV) at a thrift store in Akron, but the PRO TV footage I posted ended up costing me a copyright strike on my old YouTube account. More recently, I found at least a couple hours of Looney Tunes shorts recorded from Cartoon Network UK in 1999 (with commercials) on a tape mixed in with some AFN programming ranging from 1999 to 2001 on an eight-hour tape I got at a garage sale. From my last eBay lot from Tennessee, I also found about ten minutes of some Japanese talk show from an unknown network circa 1991 at the end of a tape that also contained programming from the Hallmark Channel, PAX TV (national feed from DirecTV) and CBS (WTVF in Nashville) in 2004, which had apparently taped over the rest of the Japanese footage initially on it.

The Univision content you found was shortly before the network became available over the air in the Cleveland/Akron market on WQHS Channel 61. I do have a small amount of Univision footage myself, specifically an episode of Luz Clarita (Mexican telenovela from the Televisa network) taped from WXTV in Paterson, NJ in 1997 with commercials.

WCPX was one of a few CBS affiliates that aired Guiding Light at 10AM. If I'm not mistaken, KDKA in Pittsburgh and KYW in Philadelphia did so as well.

I see two other lots of used blanks on that same eBay seller's page. Mostly movie titles written on the labels, so who knows if they could be duds or rental copies or not.

I know the MGM tape has the lion on the cover. But what about at the beginning before the taped stuff?

The MGM tapes are just T-120 blanks with no signal once opened. Nothing unique about them. I've never seen any BLANKS with pre-recorded content prior to a person recording something off TV.
BTW the General Hospital episode from 5/22/87 is my oldest find ever from the long-running soap opera. It was such a thrill to see the classic opening with the ambulance blaring its siren. I rarely see that on tape! Were there any regional differences as to what viewers liked more? Seems like in this town, I'm more likely to find Days of Our Lives or a CBS soap, than anything off ABC. Now I need to find an episode of Capitol, The City, or the NBC version of Search for Tomorrow. Loving didn't get cleared here, I don't think, so that's not an option.
Onevideoatatime also had several more lots that sold. One even had an E-180 mixed in with English writing, American Ninja movies. Could have been from the UK/Ireland, Australia or New Zealand, but without a worldwide VCR I would have no way to play it. Old adverts and continuity from the independent UK networks (like Channel 4) is interesting to watch.

It's been more than a year since I last purchased a VHS lot from eBay, but today I bought a 35+ tape lot from a seller in Helena, Montana, from the same seller crainbebo had bought from twice before. I understand he had found some excellent finds both times he had bought from that seller, so hopefully my latest eBay splurge promises to be worth the $30 I spent on a gift card. Looking at the photos on the listing, the tape stock appears to run the gamut in terms of the time periods/decades in which these contents were recorded.

Additionally, I noticed an ad online for an estate sale coming up this weekend in Wadsworth, Ohio (about 10 minutes south of me) with a box of VHS tapes (mix of home-recorded and retail) spotted in one of the photos. Hopefully my YouTube channels will be busy in the coming weeks!

Yes, that's the same seller in Helena I've bought from twice. I think he buys tapes from estate sales and other local lots, so you never know where they came from. I'll give you some tips...
If you find anything taped off KXLF Butte (CBS), they were carried in Helena before KXLH-LP went on the air. When the LP station went on, it was a semi-satellite of KXLF until 2005 when it flipped to a semi satellite of KRTV Great Falls.
KTVH Helena is the NBC station in town and has been on since 1958. They have always carried NBC.
ABC in Helena comes from KHBB, a low-power satellite of KFBB. You may get some content from the main KFBB signal, however.
Fox was KDVR Denver and/or Foxnet until KMTF-10 in Helena went on in 1998. They went to PAX in 2001, forcing Foxnet to reappear on cable. FoxNet was carried on Helena cable until the very end (9/2006)! Then KDVR was carried until KFBB got a subchannel of Fox on the air later.
The last time I got tapes from Helena, only one tape came from KXLF Butte. The rest was a mix of Great Falls, Sacramento and one L.A. tape. Nothing very old, but some nice finds. This new lot looks like a mixed bag, with some late '80s tape stock.

On Saturday I went to the first estate sale of the year, about a mile from home. I brought home 9 or 10 tapes, have been going through them but haven't finished yet. Everything was taped in Los Angeles (the family used to live in Riverside CA). Mix of Olympics, Bob Hope specials, even found Golden Girls episodes off KNBC. I'll have a full list of finds this week.

Something else I found out about the Helena market is that apparently the local stations in Helena are not picked up by DirecTV. Rather, DirecTV broadcasts the Butte-Bozeman affiliates of the major networks in areas where Helena stations should be received. That said, I wouldn't be surprised to find content from both markets. Bonus points if I find anything from Foxnet or The WB 100+!

As I await my tapes coming in from Montana, I hit that estate sale in Wadsworth earlier today, but unfortunately, came up with more duds than keepers. Picked up a total of five tapes, only two of which really had anything worthwhile. There were a few others there that I left behind. All movie titles written on the labels.

TAPE 1: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) taped from WJW in April 1996 with one commercial break included; Se7en (1995) copied from rental tape, some opening previews are included; Copycat (1995) copied from rental tape. Maxell T-120.

TAPE 2: First few minutes of Killing Zoe (1993) taped from Encore circa 1999 or 2000 with a couple of promos beforehand, scrambled signal; broadcasts of The News Hour with Jim Lehrer (on location at the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia) and Nightly Business Report taped from WVIZ on 7/31/2000, promo intershow not included; last few minutes of There's Something About Mary (1998) copied from rental tape; Shakespeare in Love (1998) copied from rental tape in really bad quality due to Macrovision; Analyze This (1999) copied from rental tape. Sony T-120.
