They preempted that for this?

Found some more examples thanks to TV news archive.
On May 12, 2015, because of the Amtrak accident, all Philly TV Stations aired extended coverage of this, which resulted in several preemptions.

WPVI: Jimmy Kimmel Live was preempted obviously. They did air Nightline after they finish there coverage though. Also, it looks like they didn't air the Action News overnight replay, most likely because of this.
WCAU: Of course, The NBC Late Night Shows were preempted. Well, for Jimmy Fallon and Seth Myers. Not even sure Last Call or the overnight Today rerun got preempted or not, but my guess is was most likely joined in progress.
WTXF: Same Thing.
KYW: Late Show with David Letterman and Late Late Show With James Cordon got Pushed back, most likely because of extended coverage. For example Late Late Show aired at like 2:30 AM instead of 12:37 AM.
Finally, the next day, KYW and WPVI started there Morning Newscasts 30 minutes early, which obviously preempted American this morning and CBS Morning News.

The episode of Wheel of Fortune that aired December 2, 2015 just surfaced on YouTube thanks to one of the contestants. He noted in the description that the episode was pre-empted in many cities due to news coverage of the shooting in San Bernardino, California earlier that day. The footage was recorded off WBFF, Baltimore's FOX affiliate, which did air the episode, but added a crawl with live updates that was present for about 75% of the show.

Searching archived comments from fans that day shows an odd situation with how Atlanta handled the pre-emption. Because ABC World News, CBS Evening News, and NBC Nightly News all aired hour-long editions from 6:30-7:30 Eastern, most 7:00 syndies would get pre-empted. A few affiliates such as WHIO in Dayton and WDIV in Detroit did opt for the syndie over the continuing coverage (Wheel in both cases). WXIA in Atlanta aired most of the Wheel episode on its MyTV sister station WATL (which it always does if there's a pre-emption), but for the final segment (Wheel's Bonus Round), WATL accidentally switched back to The Andy Griffith Show which is what usually aired on that station at 7:00 at the time (it has since been replaced with a local newscast at 7:00 and Daily Blast Live at 7:30; Andy Griffith now airs just once at 7:30 AM weekdays).

That wouldn't be the first time the WXIA/WATL duopoly screwed up with game shows. A few months ago, WATL accidentally pre-empted the first segment of their 9:30 AM airing of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? (a repeat) with that day's Wheel (a new episode), which was not supposed to air for another 9 1/2 hours on WXIA. By the time the error was noticed, Wheel was already on the first regular puzzle, and they were kind enough to wait for the puzzle to be solved before cutting it off (not waiting for Pat Sajak to recap the scores and throw to commercial).

Found another one.

For some unknown reason, ABC affiliate KGO aired Jeopardy! On October 19, 2012 and August 7, 2012 at like 2:40 in the morning. I found the videos on TV News Archive, but I am not linking them here.

Don't know to edit my post, and this is off topic, but I accidentally posted twice In a row. My bad.

The October one was likely due to Monday Night Football the night before, which had the 49ers playing the Seahawks. KGO always simulcasts Monday Night Football games that involve the 49ers. Not sure what could have caused the August one. SF Giants game maybe?

Presumably, Wheel of Fortune must have been pre-empted as well, though KGO is very two-faced when it comes to making up the show or not if pre-empted. Sometimes, they do. Other times, they only care about making up Jeopardy!, or they air Jeopardy! in a more favorable make-good slot than Wheel (the NFL Draft pushed J! back to primetime but Wheel to overnight).

One unique move KGO pulled last year was last Christmas, where KGO pre-empted Jeopardy! and Wheel two days in a row, first by 49ers MNF on Monday 12/24, and the traditional Christmas NBA on Tuesday 12/25, which was scheduled to end at 7:30 PT, but overrun would put Wheel's time slot at risk. They aired the Monday and Tuesday episodes of both shows back-to-back with each other after the game - J! in the 8 PM hour, Wheel in the 9 PM hour. I was pretty jealous of that convenient scheduling considering out here in the East, WABC New York never re-airs the Christmas Day episodes of either show when pre-empted (and the Xmas 2018 episode of Wheel had a contestant from Northern New Jersey).

On May 24, 2011, in the wake of the finale of The Oprah Winfrey Show set to air the next day, WLS Chicago produced a special titled "Oprah Looks Back: 25 Years of the Oprah Winfrey Show". It aired on all eight of the ABC O&O's at 7:30/6:30 Central, pre-empting Wheel of Fortune on all seven of the O&O's that carry it, all in that same time slot (WABC New York, KABC Los Angeles, WLS Chicago, WPVI Philadelphia, KGO San Francisco, WTVD Raleigh/Durham, KFSN Fresno). The eighth, KTRK Houston, airs an hour-long newscast from 6-7, so they presumably just cut the newscast short. A notice on the KGO evening news preserved on archive.org showed that they scheduled Wheel for 2:05 AM. Not sure about any of the others, though IIRC, WABC did not air the episode at all.

Because this fell during a sweepstakes period on Wheel that involved entering a displayed puzzle online, the affected episode's sweepstakes puzzle was shown again the next day with an "In case you missed it..." in addition to the proper day's puzzle.

WLS Chicago also opted to air the Oprah finale a second time at 11:00 PM Central that night (in addition to its usual broadcast at 9:00 AM), presumably pre-empting part of Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Yeah, it's most likely.

I also found a Wheel of Fortune episode, also on TV News Archive, taped off KGO on April 8, 2017. They aired it at like 8:30 PM. Also there is a Couple of Who wants to be a Millionaire Episodes on TV News Archive taped off the same station. ABC World News Now usually airs at that timeslot. This not only effects KGO, But WPVI as well. (I found one that was recorded on June 13, 2017.)

In Boston, Wheel and Jeopardy are postponed every Friday night during the NFL season so the station can air a one-hour Patriots preview/interview/feature show. They get pushed to the 2 a.m. hour. With DVR, this apparently isn't a huge problem for many viewers, even with the two game shows' popularity, and obviously the station is raking in a lot more ad bucks with the weekly Patriots propaganda lovefest than with syndicated programming from 7-8 on Fridays.

Yep, I know that already.

Likely a sporting event on ABC pushing it back on the West Coast, probably the NBA Eastern Conference. Usually, KGO does not bother making up the Saturday run of Wheel if there's a sports pre-emption. At least this year, they didn't even air Wheel on Saturdays at all during College Football season (but they still aired Jeopardy! at or around 9:00 PM, paired with a local "Bay Area Life" show instead of Wheel).

They also air a half-hour edition of the show at various times during the offseason, which only pre-empts Wheel and pushes it to the post-Corden slot, and Jeopardy! gets to stay where it is. If a Jeopardy! tournament finale is affected for any reason, it gets pushed to sister station WSBK (MyTV) in a late primetime slot (10:30, I think), but Wheel of Fortune does not get this privilege. Other times, they will pre-empt Jeopardy!'s time slot with a local special or event such as a mayor speech or Christmas tree lighting, and move Jeopardy! to Wheel's slot at 7:00 and push Wheel overnight. They claim that they do this because Jeopardy! has more viewers than Wheel in the area (well, no kidding, when you pull moves like that...)

Wheel also gets pre-empted in Nashville every Monday during NFL season by a half-hour Titans show, or any Monday Night Football game involving the Titans. Wheel gets bumped to 12:07 AM and replaces Dr. Phil. Jeopardy! doesn't get affected by this since it airs on a different station.

Wheel is likely the syndicated show that is most prone to pre-emptions because of its time slot mandate of 7:00 or 7:30 PM ET/PT and 6:00 or 6:30 PM CT/MT. Stations love to schedule local specials in those slots, and sports pregames often start at 7:30 ET. The only stations that don't air it in that window are KTVK Phoenix (independent) which airs it at 7:00 MT (against primetime on the bigger networks), and CJON in Newfoundland which airs it at 5:00 local time, or 3:30 ET. Wheel is also the only current syndie game show that does not offer a secondary (or greater) run that a station could potentially use as a backup for if the first run gets pre-empted (for example, WXIX Cincinnati airs Jeopardy!'s first run at 7:30 ET and a secondary run a bit earlier at 6:00. If there's a FOX pregame pre-emption, the first run episode airs at 6:00 and the secondary gets bumped overnight). Jeopardy! is not affected by this since it has no such mandate, so several stations schedule it during workday hours rather than prime access, or they move it to earlier slots if there's a planned pre-emption (this is much rarer with Wheel since apparently this cannot be done without permission from CTD/Sony).

Yep, I can confirm it. It was indeed a NBA Overrun.

Several episodes of Wheel of Fortune from the past couple of years have had the extreme misfortune of getting pre-empted not once, but twice. Reruns are selected arbitrarily for the most part, and episodes almost never get more than one repeat. There are rare cases where an episode will re-air twice, but definitely never more than that unless you count Game Show Network (which only airs episodes between June 2013 and June 2014).

* November 9, 2017: Veterans episode. Pre-empted on most NBC affiliates by Thursday Night Football (before it moved to FOX); rerun on July 6, 2019 pre-empted on all NBC affiliates by NASCAR.
* November 24, 2017: Pre-empted by College Football on East Coast ABC affiliates, which overran; rerun on September 15, 2018 also pre-empted by College Football on many ABC affiliates.
* May 28, 2018: Pre-empted on West Coast NBC affiliates by Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final; rerun on May 4, 2019 pre-empted on all NBC affiliates by the Kentucky Derby and an NHL game. (This episode was infamous for featuring three teams of millennials failing to solve "WKRP IN CINCINNATI")
* October 15, 2018: Pre-empted on KGO San Francisco by a 49ers game against the Packers, episode didn't air at all; rerun on June 10, 2019 pre-empted on all West Coast ABC affiliates by Game 5 of the NBA Finals. This time, KGO aired the episode at 2:12 AM.
* October 18, 2018: Pre-empted on most FOX affiliates by Thursday Night Football; rerun on June 13, 2019 also pre-empted on FOX by the US Open.
* October 19, 2018: Friday episode during NFL season, so pre-empted on WBZ Boston by Patriots All Access; rerun on June 14, 2019 also pre-empted by an offseason edition of the same show.

Your wrong on October 15, 2018. They DID air the Wheel of Fortune episode the day after, at most likely 3AM:

To lazy to search through dozen pages in this thread. I probably post this here in this thread or somewhere else on the forum.Or in the TV syndie forum..

I get upset when the locals run infomercials in the pre primetime 7pm to 8pm and sometimes in prime time...Could care less at late night .

I agree and it's been discussed in earlier pages. I believe that stations should not be allowed to pre-empt regular programming for infomercials, especially in prime time, and that the networks should be allowed to penalize them when it happens. Bot others have said that the stations have the freedom to do what they want.

People all over Facebook and Instagram were having meltdowns because on Wednesday the live feed of Wendy Williams aired in NYC on WWOR Channel 9 instead of WNYW Channel 5 because channel 5 was carrying the parade. How hard is it to punch up Channel 9 instead of Channel 5?

My guess is they were upset they missed the ever-so-popular Hot Topics segment by the time they realized it would be on another channel. Unless WNYW ran a crawl or aired promos in advance noting the change. Some stations will do so days in advance. Others just stick to a brief announcement on their social media pages. Other times, you just have to have a hunch on the possibility of what time slot or alternate station it might air.

I remember back in Fall 2015 when the Pope visited NYC, WABC pre-empted Jeopardy! and Wheel for at least two days to air live coverage. Although they didn't make any announcements or give any advance notice, both shows aired on its Live Well Network subchannel (with the usual LWN shows still in listings). Strangely, they never did this kind of move again with pre-emptions.
