The Programming Disputes Thread

Locast...which is being sued by the four networks. And hundreds of TV stations including CBS-owned stations are off DIRECTV...hypocritical?

Who is being hypocritical? If you mean the TV stations, remember that with the profusion of cable channels and OTA options, most TV stations and networks could not make money without carriage fees from the cable systems. Otherwise, we would likely have no local news and programming at all on Tv.

My Mom had a question about her DirecTV bill and when she called she mentioned WTNH's absence since July 4th (NexStar) and DirecTV plans on sending her an antenna so we can get WTNH. Of course that's not going to work. We have an antenna that I bought at Walmart on one TV and we can't pick up WTNH. We've lived in the same area since 2003 and we could barely get WTNH with an antenna before the digital switch over. We never were able to get it wen they went digital.

Let the antenna arrive and, once it doesn't work, call them back and ask for a credit or see if they offer another proposed solution.

Welp. This was a bigger epic fail than I thought it would be. Not only does it not pick up WTNH/WCTX, which I predicted, it's not getting anything except the two subchannels from our PBS affiliate. With the TV that's in the office I got an antenna from Walmart hooked up to it and I get all the channels except for PBS and WTNH/WCTX.

TV in the office.

If only DNS was temporarily granted for these types of scenarios (carriage disputes). If the rules weren't so complicated, perhaps you'd be able to gain WABC on DNS. I'd be happy to gain KTTV for losing our local FOX. It will never happen, but still...
CBS would be even more complicated with all the CBS O&Os taken down, however...

An Update on the Nexstar/ AT&T dispute

Nexstar CEO Perry Sook said that the broadcaster is talking with AT&T, but he declined to say when a blackout that has lasted since July 4 might end.

“We continue to trade proposals and negotiate, however we’re not going to do that in public,” Sook said during Nexstar’s second-quarter earnings call with analysts on Wednesday.

The blackout, over retransmission consent fees, affects about 120 Nexstar stations.

The company said that even with the AT&T dispute, it expected to meet its cash-flow targets.

When AT&T acquired Time Warner last year for $85 billion, the companies said the deal would be great for consumers, who would benefit from lower prices and improved service.

The Justice Department said the opposite, predicting the merger would give AT&T so much market power that price hikes and channel blackouts were all but inevitable.

And now we know. The government was right.

AT&T wasted no time in raising the price of its DirecTV satellite-TV service by $5 a month. It then raised the price of its DirectTV Now streaming service by $10 a month. (The company said last week DirecTV Now is being renamed AT&T TV Now.)

More than 6.5 million of AT&T’s DirecTV and U-verse pay-TV customers are currently cut off from CBS channels because AT&T says CBS wants too much money for its programming.

Meanwhile, more than 12 million Dish Network and Sling TV subscribers have lost access to AT&T’s HBO and Cinemax channels because, according to Dish, AT&T wants too much money for its own programming.

Put more succinctly, AT&T, after raising subscriber costs, wants to pay as little as possible for channels included on its pay-TV services. But it wants as much as possible from other pay-TV services for its own channels.

and here is an overview of the AT&T Dispute.

The AT&T/Warner deal was going to be terrible for consumers. DoJ was right to challenge and Judge Leon was wrong to not require concessions or mandates to protect consumers.

As the article notes, the sins of this deal will be able to be held up to challenge subsequent proposed mergers.

As the article notes, the sins of this deal will be able to be held up to challenge subsequent proposed mergers.

So far no one has made any challenges, including DOJ.

Consumers have options if they can't receive the programming they want from certain carriers. If a consumer doesn't like AT&T, they can quit the service. It's not like they have any monopoly on satellite TV or programming services.

Meanwhile, today they announced a resolution in the CBS-AT&T dispute:

A deal for CBS vs. AT&T? Wow. Good! Now give the CBS O&O viewers a $15 credit on their bill for the 3 weeks they lost CBS (or the CW).
Still no progress on Northwest vs. DIRECTV however...

Just like I figured the dispute between AT&T and CBS was settled before NFL season started, and the same thing will probably happen with Nexstar as well. But now Sinclair is warning that they could end up in en extended dispute with AT&T as well: https://www.cordcuttersnews.com/sin...ts-directv-directv-now-att-tv-now-u-verse-tv/

Damn AT&T is in disputes with two of the largest TV station owners in the Country Nexstar and now Sinclair (If Contract is not renewed) in the same year.

Meredith's KPTV and KPDX has issued a note for Portland viewers to watch Seahawks games just in case the Dish dispute is not resolved.

The NFL is back, and KPTV and KPDX don’t want you to miss a game. The full preseason schedule kicks off on Thursday, August 8. Unfortunately, DISH Network has not reached an agreement to carry KPTV and KPDX on DISH systems and by law, DISH cannot carry our programming, including Seahawks games, unless it comes to an agreement with the station.

However, you do have options. KPTV and KPDX’s vital local news, emergency information and top-rated entertainment and sports programming, such as Seahawks games, are available on every other satellite and cable provider in your area including:

It also mentioned all the Disputes Dish is in today.

However, according to Kagan, a media research group, DISH has ongoing programming disruptions with five media entities:

FOX Sports Regional Networks, off since July 26, 2019
Meredith Local Media Group, which owns KPTV and KPDX, off since July 16, 2019
Fort Myers Broadcasting, off since January 2019
HBO, off since November 2018
Louisiana Television Broadcasting, off since September 2018

Sinclair vs. DIRECTV would be devastating. We would lose KIMA and the CW DT2 here along with KEPR. Seattle viewers would lose KOMO.

Meredith doesn't mention over the air at all, but I think KPTV has several translators in outlying parts of the Portland market (and a couple outside of the market).

Fort Myers Broadcasting and Louisiana Television Broadcasting are probably singletons. Fort Myers wouldn't hurt that much as cable has a very high penetration there.

Louisiana Television Broadcasting (Manship Family) only owns 2 stations
WBRZ Baton Rouge ABC
KRGV Brownsville, TX ABC

But they were reinstated on Dish on the 7th so an agreement was made..they were gone for 11 months to the day (Sept 7th to August 7th)

Apparently Tribune has an upcoming dispute with Dish Network.

I was watching FOX 61 in Hartford the other day and they were scrolling that Dish Network could possibly drop FOX 61 on August 15th.

If Nexstar/Tribune Deal is finalized this week wouldn't Nexstar owned stations get dragged in to the dispute too with Dish of it were to take place?
